No better than a premier inn. Really feel like they needed to offer more. The tiles in the bathroom were stained the fridge didn't work and the tv kept crashing. All small things if you were paying less

This Apex lives up to the high standards of others in the small chain. Very comfortable room, good bathroom facilities, decent bar and breakfast room. Several very good bars and restaurants in the square too. Staff are friendly and helpful. You can't go far wrong.

Friendly staff, room was well laid out, equipped and comfortable. Our room was near the back of the hotel but still had a lovely view of the castle. The hotel was perfectly situated on the grassmarket, with only a 5 minute walk to the royal mile & 10 minutes to train station, main shops & Christmas market, there is also...

Staff were excellent as was the breakfast Room clean and bed very comfortable with a view of the Castle only to be let down by the noisy room which resulted in very little sleep! The take home duck was a nice touch.

Ideal location for the old town, royal mile and the castle. Big blackout curtains help towards a good night's kip. Friendly staff. Clean and smart and good size room. Edinburgh is wonderful and historic, but do be aware that it is hilly and full of steep steps! You may wish to get a taxi if travelling with bags from Waverley...

Loved the hotel. Very friendly and helpful staff. The rooms were modern and very clean and cosy. Short walk to the castle and many restaurants. So nice not to have to pay for everything extra (wifi, coffee, tea, biscuits, water bottles). That is very unusual today but very hospitable.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
