The result of a quick online search we were lucky to have booked the Abbey Hotel. Very well placed, the rooms are newly refurbished, comfortable and a good price. Efficient and friendly staff. Like most Edinburgh hotels it's stairs rather than a lift!

Stayed here start of December to see family and go to a Scottish dance. Found it hard to find a hotel in Edinburgh as the xmas markets were on and so many hotels were booked. Stumbled across this hotel totally by accident. But so glad I did. Hotel was clean, close to town centre and breakfast was lovely. Will be...

I stayed there for 2 nights on 19th & 20th of November 2014. It was 10 minutes walk from rail station. They were friendly and helpful. If you want to stay a couple of days for visiting Edinburgh you can stay that hotel. It was the cheapest one. Breakfast included. There was a very well breakfast menu. Room was clean.

A very nice and clean hotel. I guess one of the best :) Very close to the centre. If you arrive here before 6:00 pm - the best and fastest way to get here is through the St. Jamse's Shopping Centre. You just need the exit to the Playhouse. After 6 pm - go round Calton Hill. The staff was...

Loved every aspect of this friendly, and very homely hotel. Lots of character to this 18th century building. Rooms clean and spacious. Staff very friendly. Deb, second to none. A short walk to St.James Mall, and Princes Street. Try it for yourself I'll be back there :)

Stayed here for two nights after a very poor experience at the hotel next door. Despite the fact that we had basically been shuffled in very inconveniently in the middle of the breakfast hour, the owner was very accommodating and helpful in getting our luggage to our room as soon as it was available and providing us with tips about...

Stayed here for 3 nights, its ideally situated for all the sites. The staff were friendly and helpfut, the room was clean as was the hotel. I would definately stay here again the only fault was the bed was a bit hard. But if your looking for a very good hotel at a cheap price then stay at this hotel.....

I stayed in a family room with my parents. As long as you can manage stairs (no lift) this is a brilliant hotel for the money. Quiet, clean, friendly and within a short stroll to Princes street! I highly recommend the Abbey hotel.

Staff was friendly, rooms are dated and small, but clean. Lounge in lobby has good prices but nobody in there. Great location 10 min walk to princess ave, 15 to royal mile. 5 min to bars or restaurants. Beautiful garden in the rear for reading or relaxing. Thanks Dillon

Decided to stay overnight in Edinburgh at the last minute. Clean and welcoming rooms, lovely building and friendly staff. Good location and it was pretty easy on the wallet. Would recommend it if you're looking for a bed and a hot breakfast.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
