First, the good: this hotel has everything you *need* from a hotel: you get a bed, there's a roof and the location, right next to York Place, is great. Now: onto absolutely everything else. The signs weren't good. Literally; the 'R' had fallen off the front of the building, giving the impression that this establishment isn't exactly being looked after....

Stayed for 5 nights in January 2015. Arrived early but as our room was ready we were able to check-in. Nice big room. Lovely en-suite Showeroom which appeared newly refurbished. Plentiful continental breakfast with attentive staff. Housekeeping staff do a great job as the room always looked lovely and tidy on our return. Clean towels each day. Shampoo & shower...

The room was really cold, the heating in our room was not working and when we asked for and extra duvet they said NO. The hotel has no lift, and the stairs are really dangerous, especially if you are with big luggage. The room was cosy but really small for 2 people, you almost can not move. The position of...

I am currently sitting in room 17 of this "hotel" typing this out. I have never been in such a run down place in my life!! We knew before coming not to expect too much! We are only through for one night to see Wicked and the "hotel" is very handy for the playhouse(may I add this is the only...

For readers of this rev, we are an Aussie dad and son sightseeing in Edinburgh. The Regent House Hotel had pros and cons for us: PROS Located 10 min walk to central Edinburgh and 30 min walk to most city attractions. Yet the hotel is in a quiet street and our room on the top floor (room 24) was very...

Just back from a weekend in Edinburgh. There were 13 of us in the party and the hotel accommodated us all brilliantly (held our bags before and after check in/out times). Big spacious rooms with great shower room. Decor could do with a bit of updating but VERY clean. Great selection at breakfast, staff friendly, value for money and a...

This Hotel is situated in a very convenient location, near the playhouse which was very handy as we had pre booked a show there. As others have commented great central location but quiet. Staff friendly and helpful. The decor is old fashioned and quirky but our room was clean and comfortable. If you are not fussed about having a cooked...

we were staying in the family room in this hotel and it was a very comfortable stay. It is in need of renovation and the breakfast options are just ok, but the staff was very friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is just 5-10 mins walk from the train station, princess street and castle. Overall it was a...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
