We took the reviews of the Rutland and decided to book a nights stay. It was great. Very friendly and helpful front desk staff, very spacious room, and breakfast was included in the small downstairs restaurant, which was also great. The location is close walking distance to the Edinburgh Castle and Mile Street. Just about everything in the center city...

Room 10 has a good view of the West End. Quiet - no street noise despite a three-way intersection. Go to Usquabae for late lunch or dinner - right across the street. WiFi in Rutland Hotel did not work x 4 devices while we were there. Breakfast included at the Huxley NOT as good as other reviewers stated - and...

Our room was large and comfortable, the bathroom and shower were huge – no issues there. On several occasions we engaged the person at the front desk for guidance, suggestions, etc. Each time we found them knowledgeable, anxious to help us, and a total pleasure to work with. We especially enjoyed the breakfast experience. Each day we ‘opened’ the place,...

We stayed in room 11 for 2 nights. Excellent views down Princes St and of the Castle (including fireworks from the Military Tattoo). Close proximity to tram stop, restaurants and Castle end of the Royal Mile. Large room, nicely decorated with a great bed. Breakfast in The Huxley was a great start for both days. Only issues were difficulty connecting...

Having read the reviews on this hotel I was confident that it would be good. We wanted a hotel near to the castle as we had tickets for the Edinburgh Tattoo ( which was so good). This hotel is in an excellent location and the staff are helpful and friendly. We had a junior suite which was a good size...

Have previously stayed at the Balmoral when in Edinburgh but the cost during the last weekend of the Fringe was frankly ridiculous. The Rutland was less than half the price although still expensive. I booked a castle view room which was lovely but I probably didn't need it given the little time we were in the room. Room 11 looks...

I really wanted to give the Rutland 5 stars. The accommodations could not have been better. We stayed in the 2 BR apartment, which was completely lovely and frankly, huge! It was well-equipped, including full kitchen, and everything felt fresh and new. 2 bathrooms, plus a guest 1/2 bath felt positively indulgent. Clogged shower drain was fixed promptly. The location...

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
