My husband and I came to Edinburgh for a wedding and shopped around a bit for good, well-rated hotels, setting on Hotel Indigo. The hotel was in a great location; walking distance from the old and new parts of town and not far from the Botanic Gardens. We had an easy walk from the train when we arrived and an...

My usual spots to stay in Edinburgh were all sold out, Indigo was a great find! Small boutique hotel with great big service! Some of the highlights- main floor bar with extensive whiskey collection and great cocktails! Quick fresh and tasty room service I recommend the leek soup and the chicken liver pate! Well appointed rooms with nice touches -soft...

The hotel is lovely and very central. The receptionist was very helpful and made us feel very welcome. The room was lovely, very well maintained with the contents of the mini bar complimentary which was a nice touch. We stayed in the hotel bar on our first night as we arrived quite late, we ordered some of the bar food...

We had such a good time in Edinburgh. The hotel is very central on York Place. It is wheelchair accessible via an external lift if you don't mind going through the basement door next to the bins! The room was lovely. Very good value for money, everything we needed plus water and cokes in the mini fridge. I had a...

Large third floor room in the "orange" theme with high ceilings. Beautiful and well equipped bathroom. Very Quiet! Very comfortable bed. Contemporary furniture including comfortable chase and large wardrobe. Television is at the base of the bed but can rotate to be viewed from desk. Reception staff very professional, friendly and helpful. Small well appointed bar with friendly bartender "George"....

It is rear that I visit a hotel and have so little to say about it, because it is perfect, but I will try... The room I got (302) was specious, with all the amenities and an extra comfortable bed with a verity of pillows to choose from. The room was quite big, quite, well air conditioned and very clean....

A good location just a 15 minute walk to the Royal Mile. Nice modern decore. The bathroom was 5 star. Previously an old Georgian residence and possibly two joined together to make it the Hotel Indigo. A rabbit warren of a hotel with hallways leading everywhere. Don't bother booking this hotel if you have a car. If you don't book...

Nice enough for the money. Good location. Staff was truly wonderful - prompt and helpful. Rooms sufficiently soundproofed. Always a big plus! However, there were little irritants. Crumbs from a previous occupant's food were still in the desk chair when we got into our room. Light over sink had so much dirt in it, there was no light getting through,...

I have stayed in this hotel several times as a stop for business and flying out of Edinburgh. It is perfectly situated at the end of the new tram terminus, which can take you out to the airport. St Andrew's square and the nicest shops and restaurants are 2mins walk. At the moment the are starting work on the St...

Few nights stay at the end of the Fringe. Interesting concept and some nice touches eg free mini bar in the room, good sound isolation from the noise outside, comfy bed. The room however was very small and the bathroom even smaller. With such a small room it might have been better to have less furniture as it made it...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
