Firstly it took half an hour to checkin when there was only 3 other people waiting. The staff were very friendly but take sarcasm and trying to be funny a bit far to the point where it is annoying, especially when its raining and you've just gotten off a flight and just want to check in. The place is a...

Hi Kate Thanks for your review giving us a thumbs up for location . Edinburgh unfortunately can be a bit expensive during the festival but we really try to keep our rates competitive during this dearer period. The good new is rates are now back to our highly competitive rates. Sorry there is not a lift in the building but...

I stayed in the hostel for 3 nights during the Fringe festival. The hostel location in really good, most of the staff was pretty friendly and the common areas are comfortable and clean. More showers would have been handy, but it wasn't such a big deal. The room window couldn't close completely and in the morning there was some noise...

The staff is really friendly and always willing to help! The rooms are clean, but their distribution is not the best, but its OK!!! About the lockers... You need a heavy gauge padlock, and they didn't have any for sale... The toilets are clean, and they service it at least twice a day (I saw them doing it)... I believe...

Stayed her for four nights during the Fringe. Amazing location, discount for really great food in a local pub and friendly staff. Stayed in the thirty bed dorm but the way it was divided made it feel a lot less crowded, lockers were provided and the room was clean. No real criticisms other than the street outside was noisy at...

We stayed in the hostel for just a night - it was ok. The location is really good & central - very close to the Royal Mile. The staff are pretty friendly & helpful. The room we stayed in was just across the street from the main hostel. The room was large and clean-ish - the bed was ok. The...

We stayed here for 2 nights whilst visiting for the Commonwealth Games (getting the train to Glasgow for the day as hostels and hotels in Glasgow were extortionate!). We only paid £22 each per night, which was a great price! There was 4 of us and we stayed in a private dorm on the first floor. We found both the...

This is hostel is not very good, the only advantages of it are that there is a bar and that is in the city centre. The bathrooms are not very clean and I suffered of cold showers every night I stayed.I enjoyed the location of it, but the stuff is not very efficient, specifically one spanish female on the bar....

Hi John Thank you for your review . we really appreciate your comments and we are sorry you felt you did not get the normally excellent customer service we usually manage to provide . I stayed here with 3 other friends in a 4 bed dorm. After coming from a shocking hostel in Glasgow we were so relieved when we arrived at the Budget Backpackers in Edinburgh. We checked in easily and the staff were friendly. The common room area had computers available for use, as well as a bar/restaurant area which was all...

It is fine. The location is phenomenal. The wifi is annoying in that the code changes every day but it is free and does work in the rooms. The shower turned off after 5 seconds unless you held the faucet down like a sink. It was clean and quiet. Looks like a dorm.

The room for 6 people was "good" and clean enough. I didn't like the fact that the room lacked of fresh air flow. The showers and toilets were very clean and always available. The location of the place is great considering that the city requires a lot of walking around.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
