I absolutely loved staying at Ellesmere House! It is beautifully decorated, well located and Lisa is a very friendly and helpful host. The only thing I can think of that wasn't excellent was the selection of bread available for breakfast, but then British are not exactly famous for their bread culture... However, with this being the only issue I can... More

Everyone at Ellesmere House was welcoming and very friendly. The house is amazing and the rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order and was very tasty. Nothing was too much trouble and the port in the room was a lovely little touch.

A very warm welcome and excellent accommodation. Ideally situated for a relaxing walk into the city centre and there are excellent restaurants just around the corner. Only one small criticism, a box of tissues in the bedroom would have been useful !

Ellesmere House is a lovely guesthouse overlooking a park (Bruntsfield Links) in a pretty, quiet neighbourhood within easy and pleasant walking distance of Edinburgh's historic Old Town. It's also close to Edinburgh's vast and serene The Meadows. I stayed in an immaculately clean room with a beautiful view. The continental breakfast was fine if a bit basic (the cooked Scottish... Very comfortable. Tastefully decorated and with thoughtful touches. Great location. Very central, close to shops, theatres, meadows. Parking a little awkward as per Edinburgh. Very nice breakfast, might be nice to have potato scones? Shared breakfast table perhaps not to everyone's taste. Maybe weekend breakfast could go on till 10? These are basically trivial quibbles. Very nice accommodation and Jack... More

Absolutely gorgeous guest house right next to a lovely park. The host was friendly, and the breakfast was delicious. Parking isn't free, but that's what you get when you stay so close to the center of the city. There is a very inexpensive parking garage a 7 minute walk away, however, Couldn't really ask for more!

We stayed in a double room which was nicely decorated, the furniture very tasteful, the bed extremely comfortable and well equipped with tea/coffee making facilities. The decanter of port was most welcome. the breakfasts were lovely with a great selection to accommodate everyone. It was within walking distance of Edinburgh. We were lucky to get a cancellation at the Ellesmere. Received a very warm welcome on arrival. Many thanks for a pleasant and comfortable stay and a nice touch to have Port in the room for a nightcap or two - very much appreciated. Would like to have stayed longer but unfortunately they were fully booked.

We had a wonderful stay at Ellesmere House. Accommodations were fine, across from the park setting of Bruntsfield Links. Breakfast was quite enjoyable, looking out onto Lisa's courtyard. On the day of our very early excursion Lisa provided a nice take-away the night before and even set out some cream for my in-room coffee. Parking during the day is certainly... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
