We just stayed at the Grassmarket Hotel and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Edinburgh. The hotel is very centrally located within easy reach of all the tourist highlights. The rooms are fun and quirky. Beds are very comfortable. The little touches - teacakes, iPod docking station, jars of sweets all combine to make you feel very welcome. The...

Great location (next to JK Rowling's inspiration for Diagon Alley and close to the Royal Mile). Lots of room. The staff gave us a cup of tea as a welcome and were extremely friendly throughout our entire stay. Would stay here again.

As I lay here in bed at the grassmarket, my head is throbbing with the beat of the music from the "smallest pub" below. The rooms are NOT soundproofed as described. A clogged, slow draining sink was reported to management. It was supposed to be cleared but it was not done. Otherwise, the hotel is clean, convenient to the Castle...

Hi cooperpd, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us, we appreciate all feedback we receive from our guests. I'm sorry to hear that you were disturbed by noise during your time with us. Unfortunately being in the city centre on the busy Grassmarket main street we can be subject to some unavoidable noise -...

This hotel is an easy walk from Waverly train station, mind you it's all up hill. Rooms are modern, clean and trendy. I had the "cozy snug double" and found it more than spacious for my-self. Bathroom is outstanding. Large, clean and modern. I did notice that the walk to my room (can't remember room number) was a bit of...

This is a very good location for exploring the city. Very reasonably priced, clean tidy rooms. Attached to a nice pub serving good drinks, and classic pub food, which is fine. Breakfast was good and ample and set me up for the day ahead.

Great location- fun street with pubs and music, close to the castle. Staff helped with loads of information and help with tours, restaurants. Cute room - the only reason we didn't give excellent is because the room was so small that it was a bit difficult getting into a bed that only has one side to climb in and out...

Located right near the castle, this hotel was much more than we expected! We were a family of 3 adults who considered ourselves extremely lucky to have booked this hotel for 3 nights at the end of February. Nine minute walk from Waverly Station, the hotel is located on a wide, clean street (Grassmarket) lined with restaurants and shops. Friendly...

I would describe it as a posh (= expensive) backpackers hostel, not really suitable for middle aged people or anyone on a business trip. The rooms lack fresh air and are therefore very stuffy and there is no ventilation system as the windows don’t open. If you suffer from Asthma or need fresh air to sleep avoid this hotel. The...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
