We started and ended our tour around Scotland staying at Nira Caledonia, and it was wonderful both times. The front desk staff are very friendly and helpful, wether it be answering questions, advice on places to eat, attractions to see, and ordering taxi service. It's convienently located to the Royal Mile (15 minute walk through nice streets), shopping, and restaurants....

Very well trained, friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble. Hotel itself.....a little on the tired side (aesthetically speaking, although immaculately clean and comfortable) and desperately in need of a communal garden/patio for sunny relaxation. (Believe a refurb is in the planning stages). Lovely breakfasts to suit every palate (even the fussier guests like me!). Had a first morning complaint...

Dear Guest, Thank you for all of your wonderful and positive comments. Great to read that you rate us up there along side many other fine hotels in Edinburgh. My mum booked this hotel following the good reviews I had read. I have to say I have stayed in plenty of city hotels and I was rather disappointed with the room. I understand that you will pay a premium for a city location but it was very small even for two people and looked a little tired. As many...

Warm welcome from reception. Staff very keen to ensure you have everything you need. Interested in your plans for your stay - great interaction! Room was in the attic so quite a climb. We loved this hotel. Staff were fantastic and we had a beautiful, spacious garden room with access to a sunny terrace. Breakfast was fabulous! Not an obvious choice for children but we wanted a bit of luxury and our then 3year old loved the jacuzzi bath.

The hotel is an elegant old building that has been remodeled with the latest amenities. Bathrooms are like little spas with L'Occitane bath products, warmed towels, and contemporary fixtures. Staying in Stockbridge & Dean Village

Neighbourhood Profile
Stockbridge & Dean Village
Just downhill of New Town and attractively straddling a river near the elegant Royal Botanic Garden, it’s small wonder that Stockbridge became one of the city’s first hip neighbourhoods. It’s now one of Edinburgh’s most desirable, though many bohemian touches have fallen away as its residents have matured and the area has gentrified. Some second-hand shops cling on, but mostly residents display refined tastes in basement bistros, gastropubs, coffee and antique shops, boutiques and delis and at the Sunday farmers' market. A pleasant ten-minute walk away, along a leafy riverside path beside the gurgling Water of Leith, lies Dean Village. This sleepy neighborhood of medieval half-timbered houses still retains much of the village feel it had when watermills plied their trade here. Beyond, the wooded riverside path feels even more remote as it climbs to the sculpture gardens of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Nira Caledonia is surrounded by the cobbled streets and Georgian elegance of New Town, a short stroll from Princes Street, Nira Caledonia is a central yet peaceful Edinburgh retreat. Amid the plush pelmets, rich textures and original cornices you'll find flat-screen televisions, Nespresso coffee machines, complimentary Wi-Fi and iPod docking stations. You'll find warm, heartfelt service and a cool, quirky style. Each of our sumptuous rooms and suites is unique, with its own opulent character. Many have vast floor-to-ceiling sash windows, others open out onto a private garden and some feature a relaxing Jacuzzi. All have new ultra-comfortable beds and pillows of goose feather and down. As a protected Grade A building we don't have a lift, but our porters are always on hand and we offer 24-hour room service. The cuisine at our restaurant is natural, fresh and often organic, with ingredients farmed, caught, raised or bred in Scotland and with over 25 Scotch whiskey blends and single malts, our bar also focuses on local flavours. With a friendly touch - and a touch of theatre - we welcome independent-minded travellers who prefer to go their own way. Come our way. ... more   less
