We tried to slip out after a lovely breakfast, but at the last minute, an awkward conversation was had between my partner and one of the staff. Her explanation of the predicaments of our stay were strongly denied in that: "We don't use any chemicals in the rooms". Earlier, we had arrived at The Old Station and were shown to our room, a fairly modest, if not stark place. What struck us immediately was the overpowering scent of a chemical, likely a cleaner of some sort. Opening the window as far as it went (not very far) and turning on the bathroom fan, we fled. In the car, we tried to determine what to do. By that time, I had a searing headache and my partner was having a strong allergic reaction in throat. A walk through St. Andrews hatched a plan. We would simply abandon the room once we got back, provided it still smelled of Agent Orange, and find a different hotel somewhere closer to our next destination. Upon our return, we found the smell had mostly abated, but once we bedded down for the night, it was clear that whatever was in the air earlier, was now being fluffed up from the bedding. Resigned, we slept poorly in a too cold room with the window open. The Old Station is not a stop to get off. We've just completed a 28 day trip through Scotland and we have never had an experience like this. Most of our stops have been lovely.

A very warm and friendly welcome although we we very late on arriving. We stayed in the railway carriage for a night. If you are looking for a basic quirky experience then this will fit the bill. However we thought it was expensive and a bit neglected. There was a lot of bird poo on the decking entrance ( also a bit wobbly) and handrails, the little table and chairs and decking needed power washed to get rid of cobwebs and leave debris. Not so welcoming . We found a chocolate in the sofa but otherwise the inside clean but in need of refreshment. Very small shower as you would expect but flimsy double doors to the loo with a gap between. No place in the shower cubicle to place shower gel etc. Not much space to move around as you d expect and if you are on the large side I would think ! Bed was comfortable enough but bed linen a bit tired and there was a strong chemical perfume everywhere. Breakfast was nicely cooked but the buffet more Aldi than M and S . Again fine but not the quality you would expect for the cost to be honest. There were a good few guests in but small inhibiting amounts of fresh fruit etc.We had a laugh and the staff were lovely but a bit too much penny pinching and lack of attention around the carriage.

As mentioned in my title, I had an issue when I first arrived, and the way it was dealt with was very professional. That is exactly what makes The Old Station stand out, friendliness and attention to detail. The accommodation is lovely, it has everything we require and my favourite style of shower. Clean, comfortable, and set in a great location, 5 minutes from St Andrews. Perfect for a visit to St Andrews if you are driving. If you do not have a car, this may not be for you though.

A beautiful inn just outside of St. Andrews, built inside an old railroad station. No noise, and very comfortable. Our host was wonderful, answering any and all questions about the area. Breakfast was amazing. Can't recommend enough.

Friendly staff - good food. They let us stay after check out to use the sitting room to do some work. Room very hot - no obvious fans in the room but we didn't ask for one due to the time of night. Excellent information provided by the owner about best places to eat.

What a relaxing and comfortable place to stay in St Andrews! The owners are so friendly and attentive and the grounds are lovely. It’s just a five minute drive into town. I don’t think there is a bus option - we had a rental car - but a taxi will certainly do. The rooms are very nicely done with large comfortable beds. We were in the station house but the rail car looked like a fun alternative! We can’t think of anything negative and would absolutely stay again if ever back in beautiful St Andrews!

Pleasant accommodation and surroundings approximately 3.5 miles outside St Andrews. The road into St Andrews is very busy with no street lighting or pavement which would make it difficult to walk into town. A person (assuming the son) spent almost 2 hours valeting his car outside our room which was rather noisy, especially when using the pressure hose. We stayed one night and had to leave early before breakfast was being served (9am) and although we were not offered an early breakfast we were charged the full rate for the room which included breakfast and was told there was tea/coffee and biscuits in the room!!! Water pressure seemed low resulting in it taking almost 30 minutes to fill the bath to an acceptable level and although it was a rainfall style shower you had to stand in one place again due to poor water pressure affecting flow.

Such a fun experience staying in a converted railway carriage! It was like being in an old time movie. We had a cosy lounge, bedroom & en-suite in this railway carriage set just a little away from the main building where we enjoyed a lovely breakfast. Ailsa & Dean made us very welcome. As we we’re interested they explained the history of The Old Station. Lovely country location, but only 4 minutes from the wedding we were there to attend at Kinkell Byre & 9 minutes from St Andrews town centre. Lots of parking space & areas to relax - inside & out. Thoroughly recommended!

This was the best of the 5 places we stayed throughout Scotland on holiday. It is near town, about 5 minutes. It is in a quiet, rural area. Parking is on site. There is a living room for guests to enjoy. They also provide a communal fridge for guests. Breakfast was excellent. The innkeeper even specially purchased gluten free bread for my breakfast. The innkeepers provided excellent recommendations for food and activities. Very friendly people, and we have stayed in several B&Bs over the years. The rooms have cute skeleton keys for the doors. There is a putting green and sand trap on the property for the golfers in the group. There are games and a pool table as well.
