Chose this accommodation as it was cheap at £59 room only for one night. I knew it would be basic as I’ve stayed in similar student accommodation before and it was indeed very basic. The rooms are available during the summer months when the students are away. Was quite tricky to find once I arrived at the Campus. Reception staff were lovely, friendly and very helpful. Unfortunately in the first room I had, the bed was old, squeaky and fit for the skip. After contacting reception, they quickly allocated me another room which was better. The advertising says it’s 10 minutes walk into town and it is if you are 18 years old. Being well over 18 it took me 20 mins. There is pleasant short cut into town through a park at the back of the building. If you are looking for cheap, basic accommodation for a couple of nights then this place is fine. The restaurant was closed so no breakfast served but plenty eateries in town. Tea and coffee making in the room. If you plan to have dinner in the town, you really need to book in advance. I struggled to find anywhere for dinner. Oh and take earplugs if you sleep with the window open as the seagulls are SO noisy!!

Stayed there while attending a conference that took place on the St Andrews campus. Apparently this is the largest dorm that St Andrews U has to offer and it's available during the summer months when the University is not in session.

The rooms are basic student accommodations but the wifi works; the room I stayed in (on the 4th floor) was clean, including bathroom and shower. There was a hot water thingy and tea and coffee were supplied in decent amounts. No fridge or safe though. Also, the mattress was way too soft, or maybe just worn out. But I managed.

Brekkie was included and was actually quite good (with several stations offering a gamut of options). Hall staff (mostly older folks) were consistently friendly. The folks at the reception desk were younger and could use a lesson or two on customer service.

Overall, it was not a bad choice and if I would attend another conference, or for that matter if I would decide to take up golf, it'd be a creditable alternative.

The hall is about a 15 minutes stroll to North and South Street ("downtown") both of which have plenty of food and drink places.

Welcoming and helpful personnel, lovely room, within walking distance (uphill) of the main part of town, delicious breakfast menu ~ truly enjoyed staying here. When we could not figure out how to use the washing machines and dryers, one of the senior staff made calls to the service provider to make the machines available for our use. We were early and the staff graciously came to store our luggage and offered us coffee till our rooms were ready.

Booked a golf trip to St Andrews with an overnight stay at Agnes Blackadder Hall. Must have been another 100 golfers there, great use of the facility out of student term time. Simple check in, room fine, staff great and really well organised. Wouldn't hesitate to book again!

Our happy weekend was enhanced by a brilliant experience of great hospitality. The breakfasts were amazing with wonderful service from Rachel and her team. A great welcome at reception, with warm and friendly service throughout. We couldn't have asked for better. Would highly recommend this as an extremely affordable place to stay.

My husband and I stayed 3 nights in a double room in New Hall at St. Andrews University. The university converts the dorm into a 3-star hotel for summer guests. We were in town for a conference, as were many of the other guests, but there were definitely a number of vacationers staying at New Hall also. You can find info on booking rooms at http://www.escapetotranquillity.com/. Not surprisingly, the room was quite cramped with a double bed. The furnishings also had that spartan dorm-room quality. But the room, bathroom, and common areas were spotlessly clean. It was run like any other hotel, with daily housekeeping service, mini toiletries, tea/coffee fixings etc. Breakfast buffet was included and fairly nice - great selection of cereal, yogurt, rolls, plus Scottish breakfast choices. There was also a pleasant bar open near the lobby, which was nice for an evening beer or cup of tea. New Hall is at a bit of a distance from the center of St. Andrews. It was a solid 15 minute walk to the conference meetings (sometimes in the rain.) I didn't mind, but others might. It helped to have good walking shoes. In all, I was at first skeptical of staying in a dorm room, but was pleasantly surprised. I would definitely recommend New Hall and stay there again if I had the occasion.

We stayed at New Hall for a graduation at St. Andrews in June 2011. The location was great with free safe parking onsite. 5 Minute walk to the course. The staff was very helpful especially Emma. I emailed her prior to our visit and she responded very quickly. She did the same once we arrived at New Hall. The room overlooked a field of bunnies. The room was a double and basic but extremely clean and had everything that we needed. This included a bathroom in the room which was nice. They have a laundry room onsite as well. The breakfast was much better than expected with many choices both hot and cold. The cafe was also nice and relaxing. They also provided a free wifi access code for the cafe area. We found ALL of the staff from the cleaning people to the cafe workers very friendly and nice. We typically stay at 5 star hotels, and whatever New Hall lacked in the room, they made up for with the staff.

Reception was cheerful and welcoming. Stayed in a family room with excellent facilities- two double beds, en-suite shower room, flat screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities. The room was spotlessly clean and as good as any 3* hotel. Plenty of free car parking space on site, and the town centre was within easy walking distance, which was great as we were there on a Saturday and the town was very busy. Bar open in the evening to 11pm. Fantastic choice at breakfast time and all the staff were helpful and very pleasant. An excellent base for exploring St Andrews, and for £105 for three of us it was a bargain !

So. It's a dorm. The rooms are plain and a bit small. But, it's very clean, the beds are very comfy, the breakfasts are completely awesome. You can easily park the car in the car park (in St Andrews this is a luxury in itself.) It's good value for money and the staff are generally nice and helpful. OR you can pay an absolute fortune and stay in a soulless posh hotel and spend big chunks of your holiday looking for somewhere to park the car.

Been coming here for years now. St Andrews in the '60's and '70's was awash with good wee hotels doing Full Board or DB&B. These gradually all vanished and those that remained did (and still do) just B&B. And car parking wasn't an issue. That was then, this is now.

So now your options are dig out one of the remaining B&B gems in town and don't come in the car, come in the car take out a second mortgage and go to one of the big posh hotels (assuming they have a car park), or try here instead (in the summer when the students are not here.)

They used to do DB&B but they sadly went the way of the rest last year and ditched the D. However, that proved not to be too tragic (but hopefully they might bring the D back... hint...)

The third or fourth floors facing out to the front are the best rooms in my opinion (sunsets and sunrises with a - slight - view of the town and the sea.)

It's a 10 minute walk into town but St Andrews is a very walkable place in general so that's not a problem.

Factor in the cost and all in all it's very good value so I don't get what some folk in some reviews are moaning about - perhaps they need a shot in one of the bigger hotels to compare and contrast.

Been here about 10 times now all in and been holidaying in St Andrews for almost 50 years so we do kind of know the territory. Recommended.

We have used this (summer) Youth Hostel before with no problems but this year (on the first night it was being used as such) we experienced two problems: 1) TV not working due to no remote-a remote was supplied by the time we got back in the evening but the TV still did not work. This was remedied by a very helpful night porter (reception closes at 9pm) supplying the correct remote and a missing aerial lead! 2) The cold water tap did not work leaving us with a choice of scalding hot water or nothing. This the helpful night porter obviously could not solve. This was sorted the next day of our two day stay. What rankled, however, from the whole business, was the cursory attitude of the (manageress?) on departure when we enquired if she wanted a note of our complaints, e-mail address etc. was 'they will get in touch'. Well, they never did as regards our complaint and I'm still waiting!
