The afternoon tea in the Old Course Hotel is in many ways exactly the same in style as in a number of good hotels but everything about it was just excellent making it the best that we've had. I was surprised when I booked to find that it was only £20 per person, while I'd paid £25 or £26 pounds in other nearby hotels. Car parking was easy and on entering the hotel we were told to take the lift to the 4th floor. The room was elegant with amazing chandeliers but the view was breath-taking looking at the 1st green, 17th hole and 18th hole of the Old Course with the St Andrews bay, the R&A, and the old city of St Andrews in the background. We were offered a large selection of teas from a menu but coffee was also an option. The tea was leaf in a pot with a strainer but the coffee only came in a cup. There was, however, no problem getting a second cup of coffee. The food was on three layered cake stands with sandwiches and a sausage roll on the bottom, scones on the second with cakes on top. Sandwiches were BLT, smoked salmon, egg, chicken and rocket. All were tasty. There was a plain scone and a fruit scone, both with just the right texture. Cakes were unusual and very nice. Coconut, chocolate in pastry, lemon cake and a couple more. Staff were attentive and it was a most enjoyable meal and outstanding value.

Room, cleanliness, staff (with one exception), fine dining restaurant can’t be faulted. HOWEVER, on arrival the receptionist didn’t know which restaurant was fine dining; didn’t tell us there were two pools to choose from; didn’t explain any of the hotels facilities; didn’t offer to show us to our room and just gesticulated in the general direction of the lifts and the pool.
During the day -8.30 am until 6 I think - a premium of £40 per person is charged to use the pool which is part of the Spa suite, and is even applied to hotel guests. Ridiculous and totally unjustifiable. The second pool by the gym is free.
Should a hotel that purports to be 5 star and has the reputation of the Old Course Hotel really only provide instant Nescafé and those revolting little milk things in the guest rooms? I don’t think so.

Might sound or read picky, but they are selling the hotel as 5 star and charging accordingly, so I think it’s only reasonable to expect service and facilities that reflect that aspiration.

Originally had big plans to travel to London for my mother-in-law's 80th birthday, but due to Covid, everything had to get wound down and we had to stay closer to home.
Ended up booking a table for six for afternoon tea at the Old Course Hotel, which we went to only two days ago.
The Road Hole Restaurant was quite busy, but far from mobbed. The location was lovely, with beautiful views across the golf course to the sea. The staff were very attentive, the sandwiches and cakes were delicious, whilst there was a broad selection of teas. The £20 per head cost was extremely reasonable, as I've paid a lot more at Edinburgh hotels for lesser service.
Everybody in our family thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the hotel, despite the restrictions, have really worked hard at providing guests with a safe, five star experience.

In November I phoned the hotel to order a treat to go to my friend’s room as he was there with his wife celebrating his 60th birthday. It all seemed very efficient with the reservations assistant sending me the list of treats to choose from. I chose Champagne and Canapés and gave my credit card and was charged £85 as agreed. I dictated the card that was to be taken with this to the room and was quite pleased with myself. Two days later I am out with my friends and they don’t mention it which is very unlike them do eventually I said “did you get your champagne? ‘ -Silence!! Then they said that a room service person had knocked on the door and said here’s your champagne and canapés to which my friend said I think you’ve the wrong room and the waiter took them away. My friend’s wife then thought maybe they had been a gift and her husband phoned down to Reception and said it was his special birthday and maybe a friend had ordered them. Reception said they would look into it. Nothing happened and they checked out next day. I phoned the hotel and eventually they looked into it and refunded my credit card but never sent me an apology and no manager ever contacted me. I just think this is shoddy service for a hotel of this calibre. To make it worse my friend had a charge for £85 on their bill - they hadn’t even ordered it got charged for it and never received it! I wasn’t going to write this review as was waiting to see if I received an apology but two months later I don’t think it’s coming.

My husband and I decided to stay at The Old Course Hotel for a change. We usually stay at Rufflets. I must say I was disappointed and a 5* experience it certainly wasn’t. Our double room was small, had only one comfy chair and was cold. When asked for someone to check the heating as turning up the room thermostat had made no difference we were told to give it time to heat up! Not helpful. Our room had been booked weeks in advance and we had been in it for 2 hours so surely the heating should have been up to temperature.
We were booked into Sands for dinner. The food was okay but nothing fantastic. We were served the wrong wine - ok by the time it was served I had forgotten the name of the wine I had ordered but it was the correct type and I would not have expected the wine waiter in a 5* hotel to serve a £29.00 bottle of wine instead of a £95.00! Very disappointing.
When I got home I discovered that I had not got my Japanese hand painted fan that I had taken into the restaurant with me. I emailed the Concierge giving our room number and the name of the restaurant we had been in to ask if it had been found. I got no response. I then emailed the General Manager with the same enquiry explaining that I had already emailed the Concierge but that obviously something must have gone amiss as I had had no response. Again I got no response! Another example of not what I would have expected from what describes itself as a 5* hotel. Both email addresses I used were the ones stated on the hotel website.
To sum up we had a very disappointing and overpriced stay which will not be repeated.

Nice hotel in a great location, it feels very grand when you walk in! Staff were all very welcoming and friendly, we did say it was my partners birthday but no one mentioned it or made a fuss (which was a bit disappointing considering we spend £440 on a room!).

Lots of dining options and sitting rooms, all super clean. The breakfast was lovely, nothing was too much trouble and the little pots of jam and honey were delicious! It did feel luxury.

The spa was good, laundered towels, slippers and dressing gowns to use on each trip.

I think it’s over priced. My partner enjoyed the golf course views and was very excited about the history of the hotel, however for me, it was a nice hotel just very over priced.

Probably would not return.

Well where do I start? From the moment we arrived for my fathers 60th birthday it was completely outstanding the rooms were simply stunning - the concierge staff were fantastic so helpful and even provided us with a complimentary lift to get into St. Andrews with our baby.(thanks Malcolm)
The food was beautiful and made with such love an attention the chef kindly provided us with an avocado daily for my 2year old daughter and a container to take away some fruit for her the service was superior and exceeded any expectations.
The spa treatments were dreamy and so relaxing and the ladies in the spa made you feel pampered and listened too with any areas of focus for facials and massages.
Thank you all so much we will back!

We stayed here recently for the first time and every aspect of our vist was top drawer , with beautiful festive adornments on display . Our teenage son loves golf and the staff could not have been more helpful or charming . The hotel is glorious and our room was first class , with a magnificent bath and lovely toiletries . Breakfast in the Road Hole Restaurant was wonderful , enhanced by breathtaking views of the Old Course with golfers in situ . The Kohler Spa and pool were also lovely and we left feeling rejuvenated . I highly recommend a visit to this unique hotel and we shall definitely return .

We spend one week in April as part of the St. Andrews Golf Week organized by Links Golf, St. Andrews in the Old Course Hotel in April 2022. We were very pleased in every respect. The view from the breakfast or dining room on the 4th floor to several fairways is spectacular. The room as such was very well equipped with a large bath tub, a lot of space, comfortable bed and extraordinary options to connect electronic devices. WLAN worked well and the room was made up extensively every day; there is also a turn-up service for the beds in the afternoon. A modern TV is available (with all English programs) tee and coffee maker, water supply to the room every day. The breakfast offering was very good, including typically British food, the service personell attentive and quick! We used all three restaurants during our stay, i.e. Road Hole Restaurant, Swilcan Loft and Jigger In, the first two of which are high level, the Jigger Inn rather casual. The cost of the hotel does reflect a 5-star hotel, but there was absolutely nothing to complain about!
