Stayed for 2 nights at the start of Aug & booked directly with the hotel which was cheapest option & included breakfast.
When booking advised as our stay was Tues-Thurs the restaurant was closed on the Tues which was fine.
Upon arrival check in was quick & advised of Covid processes i.e. 1 way system etc. and advised our room was on the top floor.
47 steps later we arrived to our room, room pleasant & clean enough if a little small.
The weather was warm during our visit so much so we struggled to sleep on our 1st night (that and the seagulls nesting outside our window however that was outwith hotel control) and had to request a fan the next morning which was delivered by time we returned from breakfast. Breakfast (56 steps down & then back up to room) was of a high standard on both mornings & we also enjoyed a few drinks in the outside seating area.
2nd night again, even with the fan, was not the best nights sleep due to heat in the room.
Check-out quick & no issues.
Staff - Professional however felt lacking in friendliness.

Hello Arr1anna, Thank you for taking the time to leave your review for us, and I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed some fantastic sunny weather during your stay with us, and even had some drinks out on the outside terrace at Playfair's. Thank you for your kind comments on our check-in and check-out processes, though I'm sorry to hear that you thought our team was lacking in friendliness. We have had to make a lot of changes to the way that we operate and our staff are doing their absolute best to be flexible while also delivering a high level of customer service. As a protected listed building, we do not have a lift within the hotel, but are always happy to allocate guests to a lower floor whenever possible should they request it. I am sorry to hear that you had difficulty sleeping due to the temperature in your room, as this is not often a problem in St Andrews. I'm glad that we were able to provide you with a fan for your stay. I do hope that you enjoyed your time in St Andrews and hope we can welcome you back the next time you visit. Kind Regards, Carmen Rowe Hotel Manager

We stayed for 2 nights in the smallest hotel room I’ve ever been in. There was hardly space for 2 people to move about so getting ready for a wedding in there was a challenge. The room was stuffy and the decor was a bit shabby - paint on light switches etc. There was also cobwebs in the corners of the room.
The shower drained really slowly but did have good water pressure and the towels were fluffy but had some marks on them.
The breakfast was nice it has to be said. Just a buffet but things were hot and the food was good.
I really wouldn’t say this hotel was worth the money.

Hi SunSeeker2717, We are sorry to hear about your experience during your stay with us. In regards to your comments about the rooms, i have passed on some of the comments to our Housekeeping team to ensure that things like marks on towels and cobwebs are being noticed and cleaned before guests arrive in the room. Unfortunately, as i don't know which exact room type you were in I cannot investigate your comments about paint on the light switches and the shower draining slowly. We are happy to hear however that you had a great breakfast experience with us. We hope we can welcome you back in the near future. Kind regards Hannah Spink Hotel Manager

My husband and I booked in for one night early in September as he was meeting friends for golf. We arrived at the hotel early in the morning and I asked reception to hold my bag which the young lady on reception refused to do due to Covid and the fact that apparently she had no where to put it. Despite me explaining I needed it, she would not make any exception. This caused me real difficulty as the car and my husband were gone all day. So I either carried the heavy bag around all day or had to wave goodbye to it. After a day shopping and the purchase of a new outfit (due to no bag), I returned to the hotel to check-in. The new receptionist on the afternoon shift could not be nicer. Very helpful and helped me find a hairdresser to have my hair blow dried (due to no bag). Later I called the hotel as I feared I'd left my credit card there but I had not however the lovely receptionist even offered to go and check on the street for me. It was later found but I was very impressed with how she'd gone above and beyond. The hotel is nicely furnished and cosy. Our room was tiny but perfectly lovely and had everything we needed. A small shower-room with no bath. I had a drink in the downstairs (basement) bar and the barman was very kind and helpful lighting the outdoor heaters for me although I did move inside. The first wine I tried was awful but he quickly changed that for me. I believe it's a popular spot. All in all a lovely stay despite the annoying bag problem but I do understand various places are adopting various measures. Dropping my bag at our Edinburgh hotel the day before had not been an issue at all. You cannot beat the location of this hotel. A small stroll up one street and you are in the heart of the high street. Very close to the Old Course too. Hoping to return soon.

Hello Annie, Thank you for leaving a review about your stay with us. I’m glad that you felt a warm welcome and great service from our staff in both the hotel and restaurant. We are very lucky to have an incredible hard-working team who go above and beyond to make our guests’ stays memorable, and I’m so glad that our team impressed you during your time with us. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to store bags for guests, as we are trying to eliminate as many touch points throughout the hotel as possible. We do inform all our guests of the changes in our policies in a pre-arrival email, including the fact that we no longer have bag storage facilities, but I’m sorry to read that this still had a negative impact on your stay. While other hotels may have the space or the capacity to do this, it just is not possible for our small hotel at this time. We are constantly having to adapt our business to changing guidelines and safe practices and I hope that you can understand that all of the changes that we have made are for the safety and protection of our staff and guests, even if they are inconvenient at times for all of us. We’re glad that you had a lovely time in St Andrews, and we hope we can welcome you back again. Kind Regards, Carmen Rowe Hotel Manager

We had a perfectly nice stay here just after indoor hospitality reopened. Room was comfortable and food was fine, all for a reasonable price.

However the reason this score is so low is because of how tight and cheap the hotel was with us, all in the name of covid safety.

They will not clean the room while you are staying in the hotel. This is understandable given the pandemic but the cleaners still walk around the hotel with no masks on!

The hotel makes you order breakfast the night before but all this means is that they only have to serve the exact amount of food people order (not exactly generous). This does not seem like a "covid-required" measure.

Finally, and this was a huge inconvenience to the end of our stay, you cannot store your luggage with the hotel. This is stated on the website however it is discretionary in the covid regulations in Scotland and not a requirement. We were told we could store our bags in lockers at the coach station down the road, but these lockers are closed due to covid! So we had to trudge down the road in the pouring rain and drag our bags around with us all day before getting our train. Storage of luggage would not necessitate additional social contacts. You could just leave your bags behind reception and no hotel staff would need to touch them! Maybe this lowers their insurance premiums or something but, as a guest, it made us feel very poorly treated. Please consider changing this policy since we were very badly inconvenienced. This left a really sour taste at the end of our trip.

We wouldn't stay here again.

Hello Patrick, I’m sorry to hear that you did not fully enjoy your stay with us but I’d like to take the time to address some of your comments. We have stopped automatically servicing any stay overs just to keep contact between our housekeeping staff and guests to a minimum, however we are always willing to clean rooms for guests if they request it. This is written in the welcome letter that we give to each guest at check in. All our staff wear masks throughout the public areas of the hotel and restaurant with the exception of one who has a medical exemption, and she has an NHS lanyard that she wears stating this. Because of social distancing, we have limited tables in our restaurant where we serve breakfast, so we take pre-orders and book in table times to ensure that our guests are served quickly and efficiently without having to queue. I'm sorry that you felt the portion sizes were too small, but I will pass your comments on to our Director of Food and Beverage. As you've stated, on the COVID page on our website, we have said that we are unable to store bags for guests. We also contact all our guests prior to arrival to make them aware that they are not able to store bags with us before or after their stay so they are not disappointed. I am confused as to why you thought you could still store your bags with us when you knew that you would not be able to. The reason we do not store bags has nothing to do with our insurance premiums, it is the result of our carefully thought-out risk assessment on COVID to minimise the spread. I’m sure you’re aware COVID restrictions have had a huge impact on so many small businesses throughout the UK. We have had to adapt every aspect of our business to meet ever-changing rules and regulations and unfortunately there is no set standard for how hotels should operate with regards to breakfast or bag storage or daily cleaning. We put a lot of thought and effort into how best to move forward in the midst of challenging times while also ensuring that our guests are well looked after, so I’m sorry you found our procedures frustrating. Until we reach level zero, we will continue with our current procedures to protect our guests and staff. Kind Regards, Carmen Rowe Hotel Manager

Got this overnight stay as a gift. Were called the night before to say our upgraded room was no longer available and we were in standard room (£30 refund)
We had a tiny room (36) on top floor with standard double bed. It was boiling hot all the time despite no heating on.
Couldn’t open window as seagulls nesting outside.
Generally very noisy - could hear people moving around and showering in nearby rooms. Lots of doors banging.
Can’t comment on food as we thought breakfast finished at 10.45 and turned up at 9.55 to be told it was 9.45. Bit early for a weekend I thought and man with purple beard very unhelpful and declined to make us anything. Offered pretty much empty buffet of toast and fruit.
Oh yes and check out time is 10.30
Will not visit again......

Hello Penny, First of all, I’d like to apologise for not having the Pilmour Room available for your stay. We had an issue in the room that was booked in for you and had to move you through to the main hotel. We did contact the person who booked the room on your behalf and she agreed to the move and was offered compensation for this. Shortly after your arrival, you informed reception that you opened your window and could not close it. Our reception team were happy to assist you in closing it right away. I am sorry to hear that you missed breakfast. When every guest checks in, we go through all of the information that they need to know for their stay, including breakfast times, to ensure that they don’t miss out. While I’m glad to hear that Neil did offer you the items from our breakfast bar, I’m sorry to hear that you came down too late for a full cooked breakfast. Our goal is always that our guests have a comfortable and enjoyable stay with us during their time in St Andrews, and we’re disappointed to know that you did not fully enjoy your time in the Ardgowan, especially since it was a gift for you. Kind Regards, Carmen Rowe Hotel Manager

Comfortable clean rooms in good location with friendly helpful staff but the real treat is the restaurant. Having eaten there twice on the trot I'm amazed at how good the food is. The restaurant serves astonishingly good food - starter, mains and dessert are all what you'd expect to find in a very expensive restaurant in a major city. The menu isn't huge but has variety and winelist though short as well has excellent wine at affordable prices. A real discovery following recommendation from colleagues that I should have followed earlier.

Great location, West Sands just behind and can reach in 5 minutes and long walks to be had over the beach and links. Ruins, Abbey and harbour in opposite direction and also very close - 10minutes walk. Very strict on covid, great welcome and helpful information regarding parking. Breakfast was excellent with quality ingredients and good coffee and juice, proper soaked overnight porridge and lovely cooked breakfast. The best part was the evening meal we had booked at the basement restaurant. We had to wrap up to sit outside but was blown away by the quality of the food. Best meal I have had in a long time. Well presented, unusual combinations of vegetables and local meat and fish produce. Hot raspberry souffle was the finale! Nice coffee/tea selectin in the room. We did have a group of golfers staying at the same time and sometimes could hear them through the walls - not a problem.

Cute little hotel, perfect for a night or two.
Rooms were small and there was very minimal space for clothes especially in the loft rooms, however it was sweet and clean.
Great location and very helpful staff.
Would definitely recommend staying here

We stayed here for three nights with our pup and for the most part could not fault the hotel. The room was lovely, small but lovely, beds were comfy and location couldn't be better for spending time in St Andrews.

The bathroom could have done with an upgrade but it was clean and tidy so no major issues here.

We booked the room on a bed and breakfast deal as it was the only room left available and the only option was with breakfast. Breakfast was lovely each morning (you did have to pre order, which was fine for us but I imagine some people wouldn't enjoy this). We had the same waiter each morning and his service was great, he even went to the effort of having treats and a water bowl out for our dog each morning. Our only small gripe was that we weren't allowed to eat inside with out puppy, we had to sit out on the terrace. This was ok as the weather was dry when we visited, however I'm not sure how this would work in the winter. It did also make us feel a little unwelcomed, as we were the only table sitting outside. We just found it a bit weird that the hotel welcomes dogs into it's hotel on a bed and breakfast deal but doesn't allow dogs in the breakfast area.

However, apart from that our stay was great and staff all very friendly. We would visit again, however possibly eat elsewhere for breakfast due to the no dog rule.

I'm sorry to hear that you were disappointed with our dog policy. While we do allow dogs in the hotel, dogs are not allowed in the restaurant, which is where we serve breakfast. We do try to make everyone aware of this when they book in, so I do apologise if you were not told prior to arrival. We're glad that you were able to have breakfast out on the terrace, as guests sometimes do this when the weather is nice, however we do also offer bed only rates for guests who may want breakfast elsewhere. The hotel is the perfect location. It's within walking distance of the Old Course and all food/shopping in St. Andrews. There is a free public parking lot close by, so we were able to park our car and walk the entire time we were in St. Andrews. The hotel and room itself were not particularly updated, but they were clean. Compared to other hotels in the area, the price was good for the location but matched the quality of the rooms. Would still recommend, just depends on your travelling style!
