5 of us stayed in a self catering flat. Accommodation was clean and comfortable, reasonably well equipped.Plenty of parking. Staff helpful. 30 minute walk to town, and regular bus service. Good accommodation for the price, relative to what other accommodation in the area costs. Would recommend.

Stayed at Davis Russell apartments for 5 nights during the week of The Open in July. Being student accommodation the room is basic as you would expect but contained a small ensuite with shower, toilet and basin. There was shelving and hanging space in the room, along with a desk, and the double bed was comfortable. Breakfast was included in my package and considering the hundreds of people staying on the property at the time, staff did an excellent job keeping up with the demand for food and cleaning up. There was a good variety of hot and cold options available. I had an evening meal at the property one night and the 3 courses for £15 was excellent value. There is also a bar area in the main building with big TVs. Staff at reception and in the dining room were friendly and helpful at all times. Hair dryers are available to borrow at reception but the demand clearly outweighed the supply that week and I was unsuccessful but not a big issue. It's a 15 minute walk into town but the bus stop is right outside the front door and the timetable is available at reception, this turned out to be a good option on several occasions. There is a large laundry area for your use on the property as well. All in all a pleasant stay and if in St Andrews for the Open in the future I'd stay here again, especially given the price of other options during this busy week in the town.

Our 5 double bedroom (all en-suite) apartment was clean comfortable and reasonably equipped. The dishwasher and fridge/freezer were family-sized. If you don't want to self-cater there is the canteen restaurant on site but also a plethora of places to cat in dentral St Andrews which is a 15 minute walk away. White sheets and towels were provided as well as Arran Aromatics toiletaries. Separate bins for recycling. Plenty parking beside the apartments.
The rate for this pleasant clean flat for 3 days worked out at £40 a head. Unbeatable.

After living in few different countries as student, I can say this place is worst type of accommodation for students and none-students! Walls are made out of paper and you can hear everyone in the flat. Even when they just walking or putting a cup of tea on their desk.
Fire doors are being slammed all over the building giving you a feeling that you are in battlefield and bombs going off around you all the time.
Wait for when you wake up in the morning with someone slamming the door!

Faulty fire alarm systems drags you out of your bed every few weeks in early morning.

I write this review of David Russell apartments to bring to your attention some matters of concern that arose with our stay. When we arrived, around 2230hrs, we saw the night porter/security gentleman. He went into the office to get our keys, but could not locate them. Apparently he said he looked everywhere , but could not find any keys that had been left behind. He called one warden who was on call that night. She also looked but couldn`t find the cards. She made me one key to access the apartment. We did eventually get the right keys for the apartment, about 35 or so minutes later.

When we got to the flat in Tulloch Building, they were not properly cleaned and were quite stale with a musty smell. There were bits on the carpet. There was this acrid smell. We had to open the windows to get some fresh air in. The room were generally dusty and smelly. I went to the reception to ask for a set of clean linen, but he said he did not have access to any and referred us to see customer services in the morning. Room no. 2 has stinking duvets/covers. These absolutely reeked. The couple who slept in there really struggled to get any decent sleep at all. First thing next morning, I saw a housekeeper, who i told of the problems we`d encountered the previous night. Later went to reception and made them aware of the situation as nothing was done. For up to an hour no one came to address the problem. We raised the problem again and she duely complied and had the duvet and it covers swapped for cleaner ones.

The last straw came on Saturday when one of our sons, a 15 year old boy was snotting quite a bit, as a result of the musty smell. we all went to bed just after midnight. During that night he had a nasty nosebleed that soiled the bedding and linen big time. On the Sunday We discussed as families and everyone was frankly fed up and decided that we were not enduring this for another night. I went to the reception and complained again. I spoke to a lady called Sophie, who was very polite and helpful. She eventually got new linen for us and came to our apartment. I showed her the soiled bed and linen. ( I have pictures to support all this which i can forward to you should you need them). I also called the young boy who had the nasty nose bleed. She apologized and told us that she had done what she could, and that she would also not the incident in the book at reception.

It is so sad that we had to endure all this on the back of paying £350 for the booking. It dampened a weekend we were looking forward to. I think this is the 5th time I`ve stayed at these flats. It is with regret that I have to say the standards have really gone down over the years. It`s such a shame that as the prices go up, the standards are plummeting. It is my hope that me, my family and other families will continue to stay at these flats in future, provided you address customer`s grievances and the standards are improved.

SO much for customer services. I was in a residential services manager, initials D. L. Frankly her attitude stank as bad as the rooms stank. She was not helpful at all and quite amarturish and unproffessional in the way she handled my grievances. Seeking legal action.

Overall it these apartments used to be clean and worth the money, but the standards have reall y gone down, are really lacking and are a big disappointment. You`ve been warned

Kitchen was all sticky. Flats not well maintained generally. Wi-Fi is rubbish. Many of the staff have a disgusting attitude towards guests. Reception is as unhelpful and contradictory as could be. Very unaccomadating to guests needs, in getting luggage from flats to parking area.

Rooms clean and well equipped, all spoiled by incredibly rude night staff on duty. Speaking to us (a group of hard working, graduating students) coming home from a night in St Andrews in a way that was not befitting of valued customers. Would we have been spoken to in the same tone if we were an older group of golf tourists? Highly doubtful. An otherwise pleasant experience ruined by the unfair branding of our group as nothing more than ‘nuisance students’, when we are, in fact, a respectable group of people celebrating our 4 years at the university of St Andrews and, like any other group, paying customers (rather than a group of insolent, intoxicated undergraduates). A good example of customer service and care? Certainly not.

This hotel took a non-cancellable/non-refundable payment for 7 nights only to cancel it 6 months later. I found them selling the exact same rooms on another online service for over 2X the price I paid. They would not reinstate my reservation at the same price and continue to sell the same rooms online. This company is totally unethical and I would not do business with them.

Stayed overnight while attending a wedding. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Rooms were basic but clean and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was buffet style with a good selection of cooked food/cereal/fresh fruit etc which was as good as you’d get in any hotel. Overall I was pleasantly surprised at how good the whole experience was and would definitely stay here again.

Stayed 3 nights in 5 bedroom flat with lounge/kitchen area. All bedrooms are doubles with en-suite. This was an ideal arrangement for the 4 of us on a golfing break.

This student accommodation is basic but the rooms have been refurbished recently and were ideal for our needs. Booked well in advance and the rate was very good.

Bathrooms are small ‘wet rooms’ and although the shower was good with plenty of hot water, there was not a lot of room because of the shower curtain (minor issue though).

We used taxis to get into St Andrews in about 5 mins at a cost of ~£5.

For the money we found this to be a good choice and the location was reasonably close to town (20 min walk). We were lucky that the weather was terrific for all 4 days of our trip. Golfed very day at either St Andrews or Crail and we all had a great time.

Good choice if you are happy with a relatively basic accommodation with no luxury thrills.
