InterContinental Bordeaux - Le Grand Hotel garners mixed feedback, with some guests questioning its value, pointing to inconsistent service and lackluster room quality as not reflective of its 5-star status. While the hotel's atmosphere is often seen as unwelcoming due to dated aesthetics, its prime location and fine linens are appreciated.
Cleanliness generally meets expectations, yet service experiences vary sharply, ranging from commendation for friendliness to criticism for lack of professionalism. Amenities and rooms elicit divided opinions, with some finding comfort and convenience, while others are left wanting more.

We stayed in a beautiful french junior suite with an incredible view. The bathroom was large, white marble with a strong shower. The bed was very comfortable with high quality bedding. It was spotless, serviced morning and night. Staff was very attentive, friendly and professional. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Can’t beat location. Definitely returning.

The property itself is very nice, albeit a little outdated and likely due for a renovation. Got upgraded to a junior suite which was nice and had good amount of space. Bed was comfortable but the bathroom was rather small and clumsy. The shower had a glass curtain that extended only halfway so the floor of the bathroom would be soaked with water any time the shower was used. We returned to our room a few times uncertain if it had been made up or not as several parts of it were still unorganized and not obviously cleaned. Breakfast was a let down and we thought the service could have been better and more friendly. Definitely not worth the price and wish we had known this before deciding to purchase a rate that included breakfast. The food in the hotel besides the Michelin restaurant was good but nothing specials. What was upsetting was the one evening we ordered room service. I was told over the phone that it would be no problem to accommodate my girlfriends allergies. I asked about a specific dish and they said it can he made gluten and dairy free and that it was no problem. When the food arrived it had both gluten and dairy and we mentioned this kindly to the woman who brought the food. She didn’t seem apologetic and said she would ask the kitchen if they could make it without gluten or dairy, despite them telling me on the phone they could. My girlfriend had said at this point that she would just take a salad with a piece of grilled chicken since that would be faster than than preparing the full chicken dish she had originally ordered. She returned about 20 minutes later with the salad which was appreciated. However she handed me a revised check and I was half expecting it to have the dessert we had ordered comped or a discount to my girlfriends order. To my surprise she had simply replaced the original chicken with a salad with chicken(at the same price) on the new bill. This was a little off-putting and I would have expected different from a hotel that’s supposed to be 5 star quality. The location of the hotel is great though.

The Grand Hotel in Bordeaux is an up market hotel with up market prices. Whilst this can be justified in terms of location and amenities, your experience will be heavily influenced by the room you are allocated. Being a "spire" member of the IHG rewards scheme we were given an upgrade to a premier room. However the room we were given although very nice in itself its location badly let it down. This is where you need to be informed. The hotel is in an old historic building meaning the layout of rooms is somewhat compromised. Ours faced into a very small and somewhat dingy courtyard type of arrangement. This together with the small window, and only window in the room meant there was very little natural light. Then to add insult to injury there were 2 air conditioning units in the courtyard which made a terrible grating noise. So we were unable to have the window open and so not only did we have little natural light but also no fresh air whatsoever.
The other things to note are the parking charge is 39 euros per day and breakfast is 28 euros per person per day. Although breakfast was very nice it was just a buffet after all and no better than some other IHG hotels I've stayed in.
So would I recommend the hotel?. Well yes and no. You must ask where your room is located and try to negotiate a better location. Personally I feel let down being in the top tier of their loyalty club. I should have said something but it only started to bother me near the end of our stay there by which time it was too late.

The most beautiful architecture in an amazing setting opposite the Opera House, right in the centre of Bordeaux. Just returning back to the hotel and taking in its wonderful front elevation was uplifting.
On arrival, check-in was near-perfect, polite, discreet and efficient. Our receptionist showed us to our room. Initially, the corridors seemed dark and outdated but in reality that's part of this hotel's classic character and charm.
We were fortunate to be upgraded to a junior suite. The decor, facilities and luxury touches were of the highest standard: Guerlain toiletries, bath robes and slippers, fruit bowl, chocolates – pretty much everything imaginable.
The bathroom had a shower and a tub. Everything worked immaculately and it was clear that the hotel staff pays incredible attention to detail.
Our room was quiet, the bed was superbly comfortable, furnished to a high standard. We enjoyed two great nights' sleep. Housekeeping was superb, with a great turndown service. The smallest details were taken care of – the fresh flowers in the room were replaced on our second day.
We visited the gym, pool and sauna. All were fantastic – the gym has the latest equipment and all of it was in full working order. The pool is a spectacular feature not to be missed. The sauna did what you would expect.
The concierges and reception staff were welcoming and respectful and had the intelligence and flexibility to give assistance if required but (unlike some 5 star hotels in Asia) backed off when we declined having our bags carried to our room. All the staff we met exuded a relaxed confidence and pride in what they did.
Check-out was fast, accurate and efficient. Overall an exceptionally good hotel and probably the best we have stayed at in Europe.

Stunning hotel. Great location. Impeccable staff except for the one miserable cleaning staff member. Check out is at 4pm. Please don’t ring my door at 3:20pm and then attempted to enter my room when i responded multiple times “I’m in the bath”.
The room with the balcony had breath taking views of the surrounding area. One can also view the queue at steak restaurant across the road where people queue for up to 2 hours.
The shower was a bit luke warm and the shower gel definitely needed refilling. There was hardly anything in there. I just used the shower gel from the bath instead. The tap from the bath however was boiling hot so I don’t know how the shower was luke warm. The bath was massive enough for two people and a ledge to place bottles of champagne while sat in the bath. What an excellent idea.
The reception and concierge staff were impeccable and my guest relation staff member went above and beyond. A truly first class five star hotel.
My only negatives- miserable cleaning staff. Don’t ring the door bell before it’s check out time. Also don’t ring the room phone checking to see what time I’m leaving the room. It’s annoying and rude. There is some noise from pedestrians if one has the opera balcony view. It’s not unbearable but avoid the rooms if a light sleeper. The guest relations officer did inform me of this before hand. It’s not an issue for me but maybe an issue for others. IHG members, don’t get caught out by the “snacks” on the bar menu if offered the complimentary drinks and snack voucher. “Snacks” for the purposes of reward voucher only includes nuts and chips. However chips may be interpreted as “crisps” and not French fries. I went for the veal burger which was delicious I must add but €25 was a bit steep.
Positives - the drinks were awesome. Staff extremely attentive and friendly…except for the miserable cleaning lady.
Overall a solid 5 star hotel. Oh I loved the wallpaper in the room.

We stayed at the Intercontinental in Bordeaux. Upon arrival, we were told that we had been upgraded to a deluxe room. We were then escorted to our room by a member of the reception staff. This was good because the room was in an adjoining building and to get from the main hotel entrance to our room required taking 2 elevators and walking an entire city block. There were no other entrances to the hotel so we had to repeat this trek every time we left or returned to our room.
The room itself was spacious, although the layout was a bit odd
After using the facilities, one had to walk through the bedroom and a hallway to get to the sink in the main bathroom. Rather awkward...
The major problem with the room however was lighting, or rather the lack of it. Although there were multiple lamps in the room, they seemed to have the lowest possible wattage. It was impossible to sit in a chair and read. We contacted the front desk; they sent up two more lamps, but none of them were bright enough to enable one to read. The following day we explained our issue to the front desk and they understood and had a floor lamp with a brighter bulb delivered to the room. Between the remote location and the lack of light, we felt we had been banished to Siberia.
The staff at the front desk and in the breakfast room were very pleasant and helpful. The buffet breakfast was very good. Laundry service was excellent - shirt was delivered in less than 6 hours. In contrast, the staff in the courtyard bar were aloof and very slow. On our final evening, we left after waiting more than 15 minutes for a drink.
The hotel’s location was great! Best in Bordeaux, convenient to many attractions and restaurants. We would return, but only if we were in the main building with an assurance of adequate lighting.

This is an old hotel where 7 buildings have been joined together. When we were there it was quite full with convention business and though we booked an upgraded room through American Express Fine hotel collections our 2 rooms were relegated to the end corners of the hotel requiring a walk up and down stairs and 2 separate elevator rides. One room was cave like with little natural light but it had a couch and good closet space. The other room had good natural light but once the curtains were drawn it also became a cave like room since room lighting was poor. There was a small closet and dressing area with safe on floor so you had to get down on your hands and knees to use it, but there was a nice dresser and a desk. There are no modern electronic outlets and we had to have them bring some plug adapters with internet plugs to the room. The bathroom situation in both rooms was terrible. The toilet room is on one side of room and you must walk around the bed and through the closet area into the other half of the bathroom to wash your hands. Just ridiculous. The other side of the bathroom is small with one sink and a deep tub shower combo which was quite difficult for anyone short to get into and out of. The carpets looked old and the hallway carpets were dirty. The terrace bar was a very nice place to have a drink but the drink preparations were not particularly good. We had dinner one night in La Bordeaux restaurant and it was good. It was a popular place when we were there and you should reserve if you want to eat in hotel. The breakfast buffet was good and a chef makes fresh porridge, pancakes and eggs. The rooms were just not satisfactory and certainly disappointing for an American Express Fine Collection hotel but the hotel is well located to the center of the city and near a tram station.

We booked what was billed as a spacious Junior Suite (45 square meters) as pictured on the hotel website. Sadly, the room was wholly unsatisfactory. A tiny bedroom, a tiny sitting area separated by a door, and most of the square footage described in the hotel website devoted to 8!!!! (YES, EIGHT) full length closets, and two very long corridors. This room felt like a rabbit warren.
Furthermore, every surface in the room is jammed with stuff, leaving no space whatever for our personal items. So unless you plan to fully unpack your luggage, there is barely any space to keep a suitcase handy.
The bathrooms also suffer from an odd and impractical layout. There are two separate toilets, plus a separate shower/vanity and tub/vanity, located in four different rooms along the corridors. Very confusing. Plus the tub controls cannot be reached unless you step into the tub due to the glass surround.
The hotel does enjoy a beautiful location with fantastic views of the opera, and very polite and helpful staff.

This hotel is tired and old interior, We had the junior suite and Living area is spacious but the bathroom is so small they could have gotten some space from the living area to compensate it. Floor is carpeted with grandmother's style, room has poor lighting (I need to make a mental note to bring my climbing gear lights to Europe in future).
Blame it on CoVid that they're lacking of staff. So our cups aren't wash and have to call 3 times before they attend to us. Room doesn't provide tissue paper too.
Swimming pool is non-existent. Is so small should be called a dipping pool. Sauna and Steam room are rather big but again this place is so crowded, do not head to the spa between 3-530pm. Breakfast quality is rather poor though the staff are all very nice and polite.
Went to conceirge and ask for wine tour option. They told us is very hard to have a wine tour in Winter + on a weekend. They somehow said they found 2 chateau for us to visit starts at 10am and back by 4pm. We paid 540 Euro for 2 pax and end up their "2 Chateau" is actually 1 shop that sells many wine + 1 chateau which serves us 3 different type of poor red wine. Total waste of time and money.
What we like about this place is the location, their 24hr gym - well equipped. Room 219 has great view which we love.
If I'm back to Bordeaux, I hope to find a better hotel.

We are IHG spire ambassadors. Enjoyed a lovely couple of nights. The location is amazing, it's a majestic building, reception is efficient, the rooftop bar friendly and gives great views. The first opera view suite we were given had no shower and dirt in the bath. The second smelt of drains. The third was for disabled access but very nice indeed. Thanks to Oliver for helping with this. Probably because they've recently reopened after lockdown. The Gordon Ramsey 2* restaurant is currently closed. Breakfast was too expensive at the "discount" rate of £28pp! The gym located in the roof has excellent equipment but the Aircon needed to be switched on by the staff as it was baking hot. All this said we'd love to return and stay again at the IC Bordeaux!

I'm sorry, but I cant remember how much the hotel reserved on my card. It certainly was not an unreasonable amount, otherwise I would have remembered.
All very reasonable and normal, and the amount was returned as soon as we checked out.
Yes, there are a couple USB ports on the one night stand.
