Great Ancient, not old, hotel in the Latin Quarter just like it may have been in the '60s.... The 1760's! Absolutely crazy place with views of Notre Dame while overlooking a small park in a friendly neighborhood. 4 floors, no elevator. We love the place and have for 30 years.

The deep toned bells of Notre Dame can be heard with pleasure during the day (they don't sound at night). New ones were presented and installed in 2013 for the 850th birthday of the Cathedral. A great pleasure to remember the tolling in the early evening while relaxing in the quirky charms of the Esmeralda.

We found the Esmeralda about 10 years ago after our favourite hotel in the Rue St Honore, put its prices right up. Esmeralda is a Small hotel with bucket loads of Garret Character. The actual Building is about 5-600 year old and its current redition I think is around the 1600's. The whole area there was part of an Abbey/monastery....

I loved the location, the views of Notre Dame and the huge amount of charm of this little hotel. Walking distance to a number of attractions, plenty of bar and restaurants around the corner. Some little repairs were needed, particularly in the bathroom and the bed was definitely short, but I am really happy I chose this place. Not for...

The Hotel Esmeralda is a lovely, lovely place. It's old, creaky, kind of cramped in places, and utterly charming. I honestly wouldn't change a thing or it might take away some of the magic. It probably isn't for everyone, especially if you like need a lot of space, but that's probably a good thing because it's small and there isn't...

Stayed here for 3 days in March. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Location is perfect for site seeing - across the street from Notre Dame, near restaurants and metro. Rooms are small but clean and well kept. Only negatives would be there are no elevators if you can't climb stairs. No air conditioning so fine in March but maybe...

This hotel sits next to the Seine and Notre Dame in a vibrant left bank neighbourhood. Staff are helpful and approachable and booked us a taxi for the airport for early the next morning. We had asked for a room on the fourth floor in order to enjoy the view. There is no elevator, but if I, a 66 year...

I spent 10 days at this hotel when I treated myself to a solo trip to Paris. The concierge/front desk attendants were welcoming and helpful with recommendations for exploring the city. As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe. This hotel is not luxurious, but it has soul and charm, just what I was looking for. And the location!...

Well, maybe not so shabby, nor is it very chic either. What it is, is an authentic Parisian small hotel with all necessary facilities and lashings of charm but no frills. On the left bank just by the Seine and overlooking Notre Dame and a small square. If you want all mod cons, air conditioning, perfect quiet and all that...

Horribly noisy - barely got any sleep - other guests were also noisy - no soundproofing on windows - one member of staff didn't take concerns seriously about other guests' noise very early in the morning - street outside is terrifically noisy - stained sheets - what looked like blood stains on the walls - wall paper torn away in...

Staying in Odeon / Saint-Michel

Neighbourhood Profile
Odeon / Saint-Michel
As the bustling center of entertainment for the residents of the Rive Gauche, the activity at Odéon never stops. Boulevards are lined with traditional cafes, restaurants, and boutique cinemas. The streets surrounding the fountain at Saint-Michel provide eateries from around the world. Lively bars are just next door and the prototypical terraced French brasserie is on every corner. The setting for this area is second to none; the Haussmann-style boulevards are contrasted by monumental architecture and overshadowed by the iconic Notre Dame, all within a moment’s walk from the Seine. This neighbourhood's world-famous bookshops, cafés, and streets will not fail to impress you.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
One of the most original hotels in the French capital. Opened over 100 years ago in a 17th century building, the Esmeralda Hotel bears the name of the gypsy girl that, thanks to her grace, illuminated the story by Victor Hugo. Central, well communicated, charming, quiet, comfortable ... Each room is unique and has its own personality. Artists such as Hugo Pratt, Béjart, Gainsbourg ... were regular clients at the hotel. You can also talk about Paris, art and literature as most of our receptionists are writers and poets with PhD at the Sorbonne. Please, do not miss the authentic flavor of the Latin Quarter. Be warmly welcomed at the nearest hotel to Notre Dame for the best value for money in Paris: the staff will immediately address all your queries with their proverbial kindness. ... more   less
