It's a rather quirky hotel - could probably do with a makeover, but it has it's charm. Lots of dark wood and beamed ceilings and busy print wallpaper. Rooms were comfy, as was bedding. After hoofing it around Paris all day, I sunk into the clean linens and slept. Could barely hear the animation outside and it's in a fairly...

Ok, first things first, if you're looking for a hotel with WIFI in the rooms (only in the lobby) and breakfast then you should probably look further, but if you can stand to pry yourself away from your phone for the night (lol), then this hotel is worth a stay. Located around the corner from Shakespeare and Co. and with...

An amazingly atmospheric hotel, with a location that cannot be beaten! Personally I love that there was no television, lift etc as it adds to the unique charm. However, older people and those with mobility issues will need to note the lack of lift.

Everything is adequate – room size, bed, bathroom. There’s no TV, no in-room wifi, no air-conditioning, no elevator and not much room for large suitcases. Very quaint and cozy and wifi works fine in lobby. Noise level wasn't an issue with us. Very close to virtual food court of places to eat. Next door to Shakespeare coffee shop which was...

Small, old an quaint hotel. Beatiful wiew to Notre Dame. For everybody who likes something with charming originality, more than the average western style hotel. No breakfast, but plenty of restaurants and cafees just outside the door.

I've been staying here each spring for more than a decade. It's somewhat run down and faded, and the noise from the street can get annoying at times, but the people who run it are absolutely wonderful and the location -- facing Notre Dame and St. Julien le Pauvre -- cannot be topped. If you want the atmospheric experience of...

The Esmeralda was the ideal Hotel for myself and several colleagues for the duration of Paris design week and the Maison & Objet and Deco Off fairs. Centrally located, the facade presents a spectacular view of Notre Dame Cathedral and is within walking distance of all major attractions. The rooms were clean, comfortable and warm and the bathroom facilities private...

the Hotel Esmerelda is right opposite Notre Dame, just behind Shakespeare & Co. It's small, relatively friendly and very old. Don't settle for room 6 if you're given it - a cupboard with no view and a bed. Instead appeal for #3, which is of adequate size but a lovely view (around the corner) of Notre Dame. (see pic) Typically...

Fantastic location, comfy bed, cosy, warm, clean and friendly, helpful staff. Yes the decor isn't conventional hotel decor, there's no tv, hairdryer or kettle, the wifi only works in the lobby and there's no lift but it all just adds to it's charm! It was a great base to explore Paris and lovely to come back to after a busy...

I spent 2 nights in a room with view of Notre Dame on the 4th floor; no lift so climbing stairs is all there is. The room was very comfortable and mostly quiet except for a bit of street noise. Fantastic view over the little park, the river and Notre Dame. Very helpful and friendly staff. No breakfast but a...

Staying in Odeon / Saint-Michel

Neighbourhood Profile
Odeon / Saint-Michel
As the bustling center of entertainment for the residents of the Rive Gauche, the activity at Odéon never stops. Boulevards are lined with traditional cafes, restaurants, and boutique cinemas. The streets surrounding the fountain at Saint-Michel provide eateries from around the world. Lively bars are just next door and the prototypical terraced French brasserie is on every corner. The setting for this area is second to none; the Haussmann-style boulevards are contrasted by monumental architecture and overshadowed by the iconic Notre Dame, all within a moment’s walk from the Seine. This neighbourhood's world-famous bookshops, cafés, and streets will not fail to impress you.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
One of the most original hotels in the French capital. Opened over 100 years ago in a 17th century building, the Esmeralda Hotel bears the name of the gypsy girl that, thanks to her grace, illuminated the story by Victor Hugo. Central, well communicated, charming, quiet, comfortable ... Each room is unique and has its own personality. Artists such as Hugo Pratt, Béjart, Gainsbourg ... were regular clients at the hotel. You can also talk about Paris, art and literature as most of our receptionists are writers and poets with PhD at the Sorbonne. Please, do not miss the authentic flavor of the Latin Quarter. Be warmly welcomed at the nearest hotel to Notre Dame for the best value for money in Paris: the staff will immediately address all your queries with their proverbial kindness. ... more   less
