This hotel is part of the 11th century abbey complex at Fontevraud, already one of the most stunning architectural jewels in France. Rather like the paradores in Spain, the government own it and lease it to the management on a not-for-profit basis. It's absolutely wonderful, beautifully restored and decorated in a soothing, minimalist style that complements the architecture perfectly. Every...

Great location to know Loire Valley and friendly staff, but the most fantastic thing about this hotel is the place: inside a thousand years abbey!! This is by far the great susprise during our whole trip. We should get back there soon.

The Abbey and former prison is of course spectacular. The hotel has its deficiencies. The car park is a five minute walk away from reception, but they do provide pickup. Staff are efficient and welcoming in a rather mechanical way, though you might struggle to find anyone if you want service. The so-called 'iBar' is silly. It was made clear...

I chose this hotel for its proximity to the Abbey. I'm a medieval enthusiast and visiting the Plantagenet necropolis was the reason for my visit. I arrived at 7 pm on a Saturday night after a long day of travel and was told my only food option was a four course meal. There is no "light meal" room service. The...

The staff were very welcoming, providing us with a history of the abbey and a clear explanation of the hotel. The family room was very spacious, and nicely arranged to allow all four of us to sleep comfortably. The breakfast room was exquisitely furnished and the service/food for breakfast was lovely. The only downside was that the room didn't have...

My wife and I spent a night here and enjoyed it immensely. The whole setting was serene, the room was clean and comfortable and the staff were helpful and friendly. The best part was that we had access to the entire abbey after they closed for the evening so we were able to tour the abbey without others around and...

This really is a unique place to stay, the Abbaye is steeped in history and when the visitors have gone in the evening you can wander round the Abbaye itself which is all lit up and looks spectacular, its on an immense scale. The hotel itself is very comfortable and very modern and service was very good. The room was...

The Abbey at Fontevraud is a testament to the abilities of mankind and makes one regret the sad state that we have come to now in our society, its culture and architecture. The Abbey, with the tombs of Richard Coeur de Lion, Eleanor of Aquitaine and others is an absolute must see. The buildings, gardens and exhibitions are captivating and...

A stay at the heart of Fontevraud Royal Abbey? A night with Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of France and then Queen of England? Fontevraud L'Hotel offers an incomparable experience. At the Saint-Lazare priory, formerly the home of a community of nuns, the tradition of hospitality that is an intrinsic part of this place is being renewed. Sleeping in the tranquil silence of the Abbey, walking alone through the monastery as night falls ... These are magical private moments. The 54 rooms of this four-star hotel have been fitted out with great respect for this almost 1000 year-old monument, whose face is firmly turned towards the future.
