With a hotel name that includes Panoramic, it lives up to its name. A beautiful view of Freiburg and the leaves changing fall color. Our room was comfortable and clean. Although the weather did not cooperate, we were able to sit out on the large balcony. Breakfast and dinner also offered beautiful views, day and night. The only down side, is that you really need a car to go visit Old Town.

Only stayed a single night on a road trip through the Schwarzwald, but it was well worth it. The view over Freiburg from the restaurant and room balcony was exceptional, and the food and wine in the restaurant were excellent. Comfortable and quiet - will definitely be back

For two nights in I did procure A room with view in this structure I loved the building's curvature And its location by nature Our room had plentiful feature Nice fittings and fine furniture The bed size was of good measure And in-room controlled temperature The bathroom had useful fixture For example hair dryer It even had shaving mirror And shower was of good pressure The swimming pool did have a lure But sauna room was more obscure Its notice warned of exposure So not the place for the demure In local town we did venture We wondered round at our leisure To sample the local culture And stop to take the odd picture The breakfast it was good for sure With many items to savour The table staff served with fervour With tea and coffee to outpour I'd say our stay was a pleasure From check-in through to departure It was as good as the brochure Well done house team at this Mercure Well that is all I can conjure So I will stop at this juncture To bring things to a full closure That's it now from the raconteur

We booked into this hotel for a week in August. The booking was done online, direct through the website, and we chose room only, as we felt €14 each for breakfast was a bit steep, and paid the full price upfront. When we checked in the receptionist informed us that our room price included breakfast. When I questioned this, she told me our “deposit” was for the room only, so I had to tell her we didn’t want breakfast, but if we changed our minds we would book in the day before. I thought the receptionist was a bit sneaky hoping we’d just accept her word and then be charged about another €200 for breakfasts when we checked out. The room we had was on the top floor (of 5) and was a good size, with a clean bathroom and a small balcony. If we went back we’d ask for a room on the 4th floor as there is more space on their balconies. I didn’t know that Freiburg is wasp-central in the summer, and the hotel’s decision to put small fruit trees on the balconies might look nice, but makes them difficult to use during sunlight hours unless you love being constantly pestered by wasps attracted by the fruit. On a positive note, the hotel pool is lovely, smallish but with cool water and a plentiful supply of fresh towels on the sun beds which are positioned around the pool and on the long, but narrow terrace which catches the sun almost all day long. I can’t comment on the breakfast, apart from the price which I feel is prohibitive. The a la carte menu for the evening is expensive for what you get, I had chicken breast with goat’s cheese which was beautifully cooked, but the dish was bulked out with too many pulses for my liking. I had 2 courses, my wife 3 and with one bottle of wine and a couple of aperitifs the bill was just shy of €200, which I feel is too much for what we had. The brassiere menu is much better value and from our experience better food. I had a lovely fillet steak, my wife ravioli, and my son a massive salad with beef, and with drinks for all of us we paid a little over €100 which was fine. We had an issue with the safe in our room failing to open after we had locked it, but it was replaced the next day with a new one once our bits had been retrieved. We had some wonderful service from a receptionist called Shiva who helped us sort out some 3-day travel passes on-line and even printed them out for us. We knew that the hotel was on the edge of town but we chose it because of the pool. It is about a 30 min walk to the nearest tram stop, down through the hotel grounds and some leafy suburbs. A taxi costs about €15, but it would be a good idea for the hotel to consider providing a shuttle bus a few times a day, as the weather we had was very hot for walking. There is bike hire available and it is a very cycle-friendly city, but we didn’t take advantage of that facility. All the rooms have views over Freiburg, with a clear view of the Munster, and the wooded hills and vineyards. It is a lovely, comfortable, well designed and positioned hotel, but there is room for improvement.
