Recommend. Renovated, historic building in historic part of town. Good location. Friendly staff. Clean, adequate size room with very comfortable bed. Seating area has a kitchen table-type chair and an easy chair. Bathroom with a .4 sq meter shower is pretty tight, shower head has good pressure. Also, the sink is a stylish, modern design where form clearly won over function--it is nearly impossible to use without splashing water all over the counter. Breakfast starts at 07:00 with deli meat, cheese, rolls, cereal & fruit. WiFi connection was intermittent. Adequate power outlets for charging devices. Large safe deposit box. No fridge or A/C. Parking garage is a few minutes away.
We have stopped off in Freiburg and at the Schwartwlader Hof on route on a number of occasions over the past 15 years and always looked forward to the stop and the stay. This years stop was a bit disappointing. The main restaurant was closed for the holiday and we went to their ‘other’ restaurant (see separate review). The rooms we stayed in had been recently renovated but seemed to have gained little, if anything, and lost their character. The bathrooms particularly looked smart a first glance but did not really perform (sink not a practical design, cheap, small shower enclosed, shower head did not fix security, etc). Sadly this visit was not up to expectations.
DH and I (American) recently stayed at this hotel as part of our Eurotrip. We were traveling with friends and decided to get our own room when we got there. Luckily the staff was more than accommodating and had one extra room for us for two nights. Our room was located on the top floor. Since it was in the "attic" space it was like a sauna inside. We brought a fan with us, so it helped cool things down. The room itself was small but very nice inside! We expected the room to be on the small side because, hey, it's Europe! The room is updated and on the modern side. Breakfast was included with the stay. We had very friendly staff, and the room was quiet. The only downsides were the heat (It was mid-May) and the shower's water sorta spilled into the rest of the bathroom.
but inside was so delightful. We spent two days in Freiburg while on a tour of German Christmas markets. We had a rain/snow/sleet mix for our entire time in this city, but our room at the Schwarzwaelder Hof was ideal -- only a ten to fifteen minute walk from the station and very close to the market. The room was quiet and cozy and included a fortifying breakfast and handy transit card for access to the trams. I would definitely recommend this place for those wanting to stay in a small hotel in the heart of Freiburg.
Set just around the corner from the main square, the hotel was comfortable and friendly. The room was small, compact and functional, which met our needs. Despite being September and not great weather the room was very hot. We closed the windows to block out the noise from the street, church bells etc. Unfortunately this made it even more hot, which then set the bathroom fan going in the middle of the night. Good power shower. Unfortunately would not face in the right direction. Staff were very efficient and resolved this for us. The bed was comfortable, with a soft pillow and lovely duvet. Breakfast was busy, we were lucky to get a table. The food was standard buffet of cheese, meats, fruit, yoghurt, fruit and bread.
