Overall, I was very disappointed with my stay at this hotel. When I booked it was rated #1 on Tripadvisor for this city. From everything I learned, the high rating is from past reviews. Good The location is excellent, situated in a very nice section of the town. The hotel is only a 5 minute taxi ride from the train station. The breakfast included is excellent. It is not a buffet, you are given a menu that includes made to order eggs or omelets, and several courses pastries, fruit etc.. The quality and quantity are both good. The only item for breakfast, that we both felt was not acceptable was then orange juice. We found every member of the staff to be extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The bathroom was spotless, contemporary, large footprint, and a nice walk-in shower. Bad Unfortunately, the bad outweighed the good. It was more expensive than most 5 star hotels I stayed at throughout Europe. The overall quality of the hotel did not match the room rate. The bedroom floor squeaked and creaked with every footstep. The sheets were poor quality. The bathroom towels were paper thin. The wash cloths were frayed. No elevator, which I knew before booking, but worth noting. No air conditioning in 4 of the 8 rooms. Only suites have air conditioning. We stayed in early October and the room was uncomfortable during the day. The small fan, and open window, did not help during the day. Took me an hour to catch and kill a fly in the room, the first night. the windows do not have screens on them. We could not imagine staying in room there without air conditioning June through September. The room can be locked from the inside, only with a key. Unfortunately it can only be unlocked from the inside with a key. This is disaster waiting to happen if there is a fire. Good luck trying to find the room key in the dark. The TV was about 15 years old. I wanted to watch the news at night, given world events at the time. There was a card in the room listing about 30 stations. Not 1 station worked. I was told they were ordering new tv’s. I asked to speak to complain to the hotel owner given all the problems. I was told the owner lived out of the country. There were no employees in the hotel after 9 pm. From reviews, I read, if no one opted for dinner, all the employees could be gone by 6 pm. We were traveling through Europe for 2 months, I opted not to eat dinner, in the hotel as the cost of the dinner with wine, would have exceeded the cost of the room, itself, as high as the room rate was. I ate at other restaurants right down the block which were more reasonable. In addition to the 5 course gourmet dinner option, suggest they offer an option that might not be gourmet, but would not cost more than the cost of the room. I will come back to this town, but would not return to this hotel, until they make major changes. The town is gorgeous, but there are many other options nearby, without all the negatives. Given the owner is remote, and apparently does not visit often, I would suggest he listen to his staff more, give his staff more authority to correct problems independently, or authorize needed changes they bring to his attention. The staff is very competent and professional, my sense is they are aware the quality has slipped greatly, is living on past reviews, knows improvements and changes are required, but are helpless. Owner should consider letting a member of the staff live in the hotel. Maybe there is a spot that can be renovated, and free board given for being on call after hours. I stayed in the hotel 3 nights and noted so many deficiencies. I don’t understand how an owner , even if remote, could not be aware of all the weaknesses, either from occasional visits or feedback from his professional staff. I gave feedback to the employee who checked me out. He did make a nominal adjustment to my bill, which I appreciated. He was aware of many of the issues, I communicated, but not all. Not being the owner, he never had the opportunity, I suspect, to stay overnight in the room, and get a better picture of all the problems.…
