The hotel definitely doesn't deserve 4 stars, it's a 3 star hotel with a pool. The rooms are simple. The last time I stayed I left a comment saying the shower was really slippery and nothing had changed a year later. I had the same room, the previous year I had cleaned the air vent over the shower myself as it was clogged with dust and a year later I had to do it again as they obviously hadn't touched it in the meantime.
The food in the restaurant is really bad which is a shame because it could be nice sitting outside in the evening by the pool. The bar isn't much better as the seats are just benches with cushions on and not at all comfortable.
I just went through a lot of the photos on this site and saw they were commissioned by Trip Advisor. The hotel is not nearly as nice as in the photos.
They are really rigid about check-in and check-out times and I actually had to pay an extra night to stay three more hours in my room so I booked another room on Internet as it was cheaper and changed rooms which was really ridiculous as that meant they had to clean two rooms instead of two so they should have just charged me a small supplement to stay in the the first room instead of demanding more than an extra night.
I was in the annex which I definitely do not recommend as it's miles away from the main pool and I only took a room there on my last two stays as it was the only place where they had a double mattress but the problem was that the Wifi didn't work and a year later on my second stay they hadn't even bothered to sort that out and they obviously won't as it's a low budget hotel. Someone should take over the hotel, renovate it, improve the restaurant and expand the pool and also repair the pool showers while they are at it. And if it's an adult only hotel then they should completely ban children.
The nearest beach is mainly stony and not that nice and it will take you 15 minutes to walk into town.
I saw the 5 star reviews and the 1 star reviews and to be honest it should be rated 3 stars. They will probably respond to this review like they usually do but of course they won't change anything. Next time I will stay closer to the town centre which is a shorter walk and has better beaches.
The reception is very well decorated and spacious, and the staff couldn't be more friendly. The bar area is also large, if a bit sparse, and the pool is great and well kept.
The restaurant also offers a great choice of food in buffet style, and the service is good.
So it's all looking pleasant and like it should be a great stay, but...
Then you go to your room. The whole hotel seems to be a jumble of smaller buildings that have been connected over the years by a maze of corridors. None of these corridors are air conditioned and so they're really hot, and the whole thing has the atmosphere of an abandoned youth centre.
The rooms are large and the bathrooms are great , but it's all a bit sparse and no character. The Walla are all bare, a picture here and there would have been nice, and the TV is very small for the room and could do with being wall-mounted to give more space for storage.
Speakkng of storage, the room is designed incredibly badly. Theres a cupboard next to the bed, but due to it being so close to the headboard you can't open the cupboard door. This means you can't open any of the drawers inside the cupboard as the cupboard door won't open, so it's all completely pointless.
There are also signs to a room with a panaromic view on the top floor, but every door you try that might lead there is locked. Even the lift to the third floor opens out onto a locked door and nothing else.
There are odd little outdoor seating areas dotted about on the upper floors that are small and surrounded by high walls. Why anyone would want to sit on one of these rather than their own room balcony is anyone's guess.
Also, rather annoyingly, the only way in and out of the pool area is to walk through either the bar, the restaurant or reception - there is no other access to the rooms. As the hotel has a policy of people being fully dressed in these areas, after you've used the pool you have to get fully dried and dressed again before you can go anywhere. The layout just doesn't work.
From the inside, you also noticed how tired and rusty a lot of the hotel is looking. There are watermarks in most of the paint, and the room balconies lookoke they've seen better days.
In general this isn't a bad hotel. The staff are great and the location, while a bit further out from Sitges centre than most, is still only a 10 minute walk from town. The beach is a 2 minute walk across the road, which is great.
But the whole place looks a little unloved and in need of a good overhaul and redesign.
They provide towels for the swimming pool and lunch at an affordable price, the flat bikini costs 7 euros
Breakfast included in the stay
If you see a bad review for this hotel, maybe they were just having a bad day. I've been there six times and can't find anything better for the money. I'm going back again next year for sure.
The hotel itself is lovely, very clean and well decorated. Staff are very welcoming, and reception is always open if you need help. The bed and pillows were very comfy and our room was always cleaned to a high standard. We paid a bit extra for an ‘antemare’ room with a balcony, but it seems that all of the rooms actually have balconies so maybe this wasn’t necessary. Our room was by the entrance, there was a nice fountain outside our window but it could get a bit noisy in the daytime, but was only on from 10am-10pm.
We went half board, and enjoyed the buffets very much. Lots of options for both breakfast and dinner, and tasty too. Restaurant staff are great, super friendly and always make you feel at home. A few more vegetarian main meals would be appreciated, but staff were very accommodating and would prepare things especially for you if needed. There was only one occasion where I couldn’t eat any of the mains, but I do eat fish so may be more difficult if you’re vegan. Food could be labelled a bit better, but on our last morning there was new digital signage so perhaps this has been implemented. You do have to pay for all drinks including water, but that was sort of expected.
The pool was nice, it does get a little busy after breakfast and during the day, but this isn’t much of a problem, we managed to find sun loungers fairly easily. You do have to rent towels for a €20 deposit per towel, but this was promptly refunded on checking out. The pool is not such a big deal when the beach is so close as an alternative!! We loved swimming in the sea, but just keep an eye out for jellyfish during the summer as there were a few dotted around. The hotel bar was a nice addition for snacks and drinks.
Overall I would highly recommend Hotel Antemare, and would rate it 4.5 stars! Would definitely stay here again if in the area. Sitges is lovely, lots of historic buildings and some interesting museums, there isn’t a lot to do but Barcelona is close by for day trips, or hop on the train to a neighbouring town - or just relax!
Upon check in we were informed that the air conditioning in our room had broken and would not be fixed until 5 days after check in. As our stay was for only 3 nights, we would have to endure 3 nights with no air conditioning. Also, there were no other rooms available for us to move to.
I suffer from bad asthma and specifically chose this hotel due to its listed air conditioning facilities, which helps with my condition.
We agreed to try the room for one evening to see how we managed with no air conditioning, with the receptionist asking us to return to reception at 9am the next morning to see if they could move us to another room that may become available. A fan was also placed in our room.
Unfortunately the first nights stay was unbearable. The room was extremely hot and the fan was simply blowing hot air around the room, making the situation worse.
As a result we had to move some bed sheets onto the balcony to sleep as the room become unbearable to stay in as it was too hot, also causing my asthma to flare up.
As instructed, I returned to reception the next morning where the receptionist accused me of lying when I said I was instructed to come and see if they would have any new rooms available to move us to. They claimed that I was told to return in two days, as opposed to the next morning and felt embarrassed that I was accused of lying.
I was informed that nothing else would be done and would have to preserver with no air condition for the remaining two evenings. Another fan was added to the room, which again made the situation even worse.
No compensation was offered until I flagged that we had not been offered anything as an apology. As a result free breakfast was added to our room for rest of the stay.
The rest of the stay was extremely unpleasant as we had to spend 2 further nights sleeping outdoors on the balcony.
Even though we had the compensation of free breakfast, we were never able to attend or take advantage of it as we were extremely tired due to a lack of sleep.
I have attempted to contact the hotel both directly on email and twice through booking.com with no response. If someone from the hotel sees this message, please get back in touch in order to process a refund for our stay.
Many thanks
The beautiful beach is just around the corner, a 2 minute walk and with a refundable deposit, beach towels are available at reception.
The staff at reception, the restaurant, the bar and housekeeping were exceptionally helpful and friendly. There is obviously a very efficient management team here as the staff are very happy. Nothing was ever a problem -ask for a map of the town at reception.
Breakfast was really lovely and had a variety of choices, both hot and cold with fruit, pastries plus champagne for those inclined! The breakfast room overlooks the pool with an additional outside area to eat in. The pool has plenty of comfortable sun loungers.
A bar serving drinks, cocktails, snacks and lunch also overlooks the pool and has comfy outside chairs & couches - lovely at night.
Our double room had a spacious comfortable bed with a large wardrobe and safe (key available at reception). A mini bar was stocked with reasonably priced beverages but also had space for our own water bottles. Shower in bathroom (I hate bathtubs) with toiletries & blowdryer.
Tv in bedroom and we had a balcony with table and 2 chairs. No kettle or coffee machine. We didn’t need them though. If I went again I’d book a room with a pool view.
The hotel bedrooms were spread out over a large block, we had to walk and use stairs to access our block but some rooms were accessible by lifts near reception so suitable for those with mobility issues . Reading room with books left behind by guests and couches was nice.
There isa vending machine with drinks and snacks which was really handy.
There are no restaurants near the hotel but a beach bar called ‘Papaya’ , serves lunches.
Taxi from airport was E70 - return taxi was booked at reception and cost E84.
There is a train station in Sitges centre. Airport to Sitges- change at El Prat de Llobregat station for train to Sitges.
You can get a train directly to Barcelona for less than E10 return.
Nice restaurants in Sitges were La Cantina de Sitges, Massimo, La Zorra. Outside bar at Hotel Calipolis was good for drinks and Tapas.
