Perched atop a steep hill, the Rock Hotel Gibraltar offers travelers stunning views and a prime location close to local attractions. While guests have called out the comfortable rooms and the historic, stylish atmosphere, there are some concerns about cleanliness and noise. The pool area and other amenities generally receive compliments, although there is room for improvement.
The staff's friendliness stands out, despite occasional service inconsistencies. While the value is deemed reasonable by many, a few reviewers warn of extra charges like the cost for late checkout.

Detailed Reviews
We stayed at the Rock Hotel recently. Naturally the management are trying to get a handle on how to run it within Covid restrictions, but we felt the impact of the disorganisation which was a shame. Breakfast was a disaster, we waited 45 mins + both days to be served.
As other guests have mentioned, the rooms are tired, chipped paint on the walls, clogged shower heads, and mildew on grouting. Really not up to 4 star standard.
The tables on the terrace should be thrown in the skip. Why they are still subjecting guests to sit at them despite the varnish disintegrating, sticky and chipping beats me.
We heard that the aircon in the foyer had been deliberately switched off to save money. Not good enough, as it was sweltering both days we were there.
Standards of Covid cleaning routines need to be raised pronto. Tables are being sprayed, but one blue fabric cloth is being shared by the waiters. Sunbeds are not being sprayed, just the tables. I disagree with the pool being dirty, yes it contains flies, but the pool is set in a botanical garden, what does one expect?
Excellent staff that must get a mention are Juan, Kevin and Natalya - thank you for improving our stay.
Management you must advise your staff not to shake hands with guests. We saw this on several occasions from your waiting staff.
We do love this place, but it needs to up its game or risk losing returning custom.

Dear Charlene1956, Many thanks for writing your review and for sharing your experience with good constructive comments. Based on feedback such as yours we have carried a number of changes to the breakfast service that appear to be very well received and have sorted the problem with the speed of service. We have been repairing terrace table tops on an ongoing basis and will be replacing chipped ones as soon as possible. I am sorry if you were misinformed about the air-conditioning, it is being looked into but it is not a questioning of cost saving. We have also reviewed and reinforced the table cleaning process and trained staff accordingly. I am pleased to hear that Juan, Kevin and Natalya made your stay special. I taken on board and accept your point of waiting staff not shaking hands with guests and have reminded them of this. Charlene, once again thank you for your comments, we will work very hard to sort all the issues as we really do wish to welcome you back soon. Kind regards, Charles

My wife and I stayed here for a few nights and absolutely loved it, the staff are so friendly and helpful, our room overlooking the sea, also had a great view of the town and the cable car as you can see from the picture and was lovely, we had breakfast included and were so glad that we did as it was excellent, quality sausages and bacon, scrambled eggs were on the buffet, however , if you wanted an omelette or poached or fried eggs you could order them fresh from the kitchen.
They were taking the COVID restrictions very seriously, with tables cleaned after each guest had left and the compulsory wearing of masks, these measures made us feel safe.
The hotel is situated on a reasonably steep hill is within easy walking distance of the main town, where you can find a fantastic array of pubs and bars, where a pint was not much more than £3 😋.
Take advantage of some of the great offers you can get on jewellery, as the prices are excellent.
Overall we had a great time, and will most certainly be coming back, and we will be staying at the Rock Hotel, thank you so much for a lovely break.

I stayed here for 7 nights the last week in August, on my own, and had the most wonderful time. My 4th floor room was lovely and had everything I needed. Tea / coffee/ water / towels replenished daily, room spotless every time I returned late afternoon and bed was so comfortable it was like sleeping on a cloud. I spent many an evening having my dinner on the balcony, watching the sun go down. Room service was always delivered swiftly & professionally, and was delicious. Pool area was as you would expect in high season - I'm not sure if some people expect their own personalised sunbathing area every day, given some of the complaints! I chose to go there in the mornings and go exploring in the afternoons, and never had an issue getting a sunbed. Plentiful towels which you only had to sign in and out and they certainly were NOT rationed!! Breakfast was good, had everything I wanted. Have to mention all the brilliant staff, from Reception to waiters to bar staff to cleaners - every one of them polite and professional. Fab cocktails in the bar too! I struggle to comprehend some of the reviews from around the same time as I was there - some people are just never happy. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel. PS only small niggle was the broken hinge on my balcony door in Room 411. Wasn't a deal breaker but I was a bit wary when opening the door in case it fell in!! Easily solved though, I'm sure :)

Hotel is a little way out from town, which means it’s quiet and away from the city. On the flip side you need to consider is a bit of a walk or a taxi . We had dinner in the restaurant which was very nice , however the hotel web site has an old menu as the hotel is currently offering limited choices each night.
We were happy with our room, nice and clean and spacious, even without a balcony. Waiting in our room was a lovely bottle of bubbles from the hotel, as it was my birthday the next day, this was a thoughtful touch.
Once we had settled into our room we had some issues with the room next door room playing really loud music.
I contacted reception who called the room to ask them to turn the music down, which they did . Then to my surprise reception called our room to let’s us know they had asked them to turn it down and for us to call them back should the room turn the music up, this was a great customer experience moment.
I’m sorry to say this, but now some negative points.
The shower in the room was terrible, no water pressure what so ever, it was only hot with a trickle and when you added cold to get more water the temperature just got cold .
At the bar on our last night (8th August). We asked what we believe is the bar manager ( he had black jacket and trousers)for two drinks. On pouring the second drink he noticed the glass was dirty on the rim, so he used the palm of his hand to clean the glass and then started to poor the drink into the glass ! At which point we asked him to stop and get another glass . This should never have happened in normal circumstances let alone with the situation we are in right now with Covid. If he noticed the glass rim was dirty he should have got another glass and not tried to clean it with the palm of his hand . He did apologise, but it did not sit well with us, as we did not expect this situation to happen in such a high class establishment.
We also had issues trying to find a sun bed at the pool, obviously not the hotels fault as they have reduced the number of chairs and beds due to Covid, so I guess you need to get up early if you wAnt a bed or chair . What would have been nice and more fare, would be to have a rota or time limit so that more people can use the facility.
One day we went out for the day and came back early evening to find our room had not been cleaned or made up. We called reception who said they could get someone to clean it, so we had to wait in the bar, whilst it was cleaned as it had to be done straight away as the housekeeper was going off shift .
A nice hotel, but has issues which need to be addressed.

Dear andycap1, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We certainly appreciate the fact that you have mentioned a number of good points but see the negative issues as an opportunity to address them taking any necessary remedial action. The problem with the lower than usual water pressure in your room has been sorted by means of a general purge and cleaning of the plumbing system. We have taken immediate corrective action at the pool in terms of adding extra sun beds and increasing staff to focus on cleaning and sanitisation. We are doing everything we can to manage the very high occupancy we are experiencing and we do so very conscious that nothing is more important than the guest experience. I have investigated the issue you mention regarding the bar manager touching the glass with the palm of his hand. On Saturday night the Lounge Bar and Wisteria Terrace were extremely busy and in the rush of not wanting our guests to wait too long he may have inadvertently touched the glass. He is a long-serving very professional and conscientious person. I apologise most profusely if we gave the wrong impression especially in these times but assure you that attention to safety is not only our duty but the best service we aspire to offer our guests. We look forward to warmly welcoming you back soon. Kind regards, Charles

We stayed here for our honeymoon. After lots of research it seemed like the best hotel on the rock! When we arrived the staff was friendly and check in was easy. Our room was on the 3rd floor with a sea view. The view was incredible! The room however was not. It was very basic. There was not lights in the room, only a lamp in each corner which made it very dull. The bed was very comfortable with charging ports at both sides of the bed. On our first night relaxing we watching some TV only to discover it wasn’t working, we asked at reception and they tried there best to fix it but was told the signal is not very good here so it’s hit and miss. The shower room was fine, a nice shower and daily toiletries. Our room was cleaned daily but not enough tea/coffee was left, only 1 tea bag each per day is not enough for us brits!
We had 1 drink in the restaurant which was also disappointing, they was only 1 type of beer on tap and no cocktails whatsoever. The food menu looked nice however it didn’t appeal to us as there was no lighter options such as chips, and more British options.
The swimming pool is also not on the same site, it is across a busy road which we was not made aware of before our stay, which means you have to take all your clothes and change when you arrive, there’s no nipping down to the pool for a quick swim.
We had a fantastic honeymoon in Gibraltar, it’s a shame that the hotel did not meet expectations. It needs a whole refurbishment to bring it up to date from the basic rooms.
The premier inn at Heathrow was a much nicer room then the one we stayed in at the rock and was a fraction of the price! I would not stay here again or recommend to anyone.

Location views are good and reception area and sitting areas, restaurant are modern and acceptable.
We arrived and eventually located the lifts, the staff did not concern themselves with our directions as were too busy doing nothing.
We put air conditioning on immediately and a foosty smell was evident. We mentioned this to staff when going out and on our return the floor in room had been washed and smell seemed better.
Bathroom fittings need repair, water squirting out shower head upwards as well as downwards. Only one shower gel, one shampoo and one conditioner. Surely as rooming 2 people you could stretch the provision slightly , given low budget hotels supply more free of charge.
Pool area not very clean and lack of beds, perhaps excused by corona regulations. That said, when a bed becomes available they should perhaps be washed down before new occupants take them. Outside user's, non residents, were at the pool and on questioning I was advised they are "members " and the hotel have all their contact details. For a pool this size Surely the pool should be used by hotel occupants only, paying £140 a night. How much is it for membership of the pool?
Overall a bit disappointed, hotel not much better than cheaper low budget hotels and definitely over priced for the offering.

We have just returned from a weeks break at the Rock. It was fabulous from start to finish and the break we all wanted. Gibraltar exceeded our expectations having only visited before for a day in the rain.
The pool are was so clean and you would always see the maids cleaning the toilets and also the rails on the swimming pool.
We had 2 meals on the terrace the BBQ and these were excellent.
The service at breakfast could have been a bit better and on our last day there was very little cereal there.
The hotel was full but you felt safe. The room was cleaned on a daily basis and bedding changed once during the week. Would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel and Gibraltar to family or friends.

We’ve been here for 1 day of our 5 night stay and it’s brilliant: a belated Pearl Anniversary celebration and what a great choice. Check in was smooth with 2 very helpful and engaging front desk staff who made us feel welcome right away, taking our bags and advising when we could check in. Our double room with balcony was perfect, on the 4th floor with great views, newly refurbished and we were delighted to find a nice chilled bottle of cava awaiting our arrival. The showers gel etc is high quality, there’s an extensive range of tv channels, we were happy to have a fridge and a kettle, plus fluffy towels and a very comfy bed. The food was delicious too, and I shall be reviewing separately but so far, all staff have been brilliant, the hotel feels very safe with masks and social distancing and we are more than happy. Thank you to The Rock Hotel.

I have just returned (yesterday) from a week's stay at The Rock hotel and what a lovely hotel this is. I was at the hotel with friends and we have had a wonderful time. I cannot really fault the hotel for anything. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful. There was always someone at the entrance to the hotel to welcome us back at the end of the day or to offer help or advice.
My room was spotlessly clean and toiletries topped up regularly. As stated in other reviews, there can be problems with noise from adjoining rooms as the walls are thin? Luckily this didn't affect me too much as I only had a neighbour for a couple of nights.
Cleaning was carried out daily throughout the hotel. Breakfast may be a little expensive but the food is plentiful and very good quality. Drinks from the bar are a fair price.
The salt water swimming pool is a good size to be able to have a little swim and there were plenty of sunbeds available. Sandwiches from the poolside bar are a good size and could easily be shared between two?
The location of the hotel is its benefit but also its downfall? As it is quite high on the Rock, you have a beautiful view from the rooms/balcony's. Unfortunately, it does mean a rather steep walk to get to the hotel. I would recommend using either bus or taxi if you have mobility/heart/breathing problems? Taxis are reasonably priced, frequent and reliable.
There is a genuine warmth around the hotel and nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Although the hotel is a little more expensive than other hotels on the Rock, I will definitely return and recommend a stay,
An additional tip, don't leave anything out on the balcony as the macaques/apes do occasionally come down to the hotel.

Given there's not a great choice of destinations to visit, Gibraltar seems to have got its' act together so off we went. However we wanted something a little better and as my parents had stayed at the Rock some twenty years ago that was out choice. I know the current climate's hard for hotels etc., but a few more staff wouldn't hurt the bottom line. The rooms and views were quite special but the cleaning staff need either a lesson in housekeeping or changing, as they're simply letting the hotel down. The front of house were better but issues getting a taxi isn't really good enough. Lastly for the price and give it's elevated location, maybe a complementary service into town wouldn't of hurt1
Don't get me wrong a very good hotel on small things they let themselves down so - 3/5 could do better.

Any requests we have made to the Rock Hotel, has always been granted. The staff there are really very obliging, and go to the extremes to accommodate the request made. Been going there for years, and will be back again this year(hopefully).
It is possible to use the pool as a guest and as with all good hotels you will be able to eat there as a non resident.
