Read the previous reviews as well as going by recommendation to book a stay on the Sunborn. Talking to others it is one of the premier hotels in Gibraltar, unique as a static cruise ship. I was very glad we chose it for our accommodation.

PROS - very spacious rooms with lovely shower in the bathroom. Beds comfortable, tea/coffee provided in the rooms along with a kettle. Also a selection of snacks/drinks available for purchase in the minibar. Room was quiet and had an amazing view. Every afternoon we were asked if everything was alright by the chambermaid and if we needed anything. Food in the restaurant ranged from average to excellent, we ate here every day for dinner. The breakfast room had a wonderful view and a good range of hot/cold food. Coffee was exceptional! Service was good to excellent. The electronic controls in the room were quirky but did become tedious after the first day. Note that the small pool is seasonal, I couldn't find any information on this before traveling so it may be useful for others to know.
CONS - when we made bookings for dinner we were told to go to the wrong restaurant on one evening, there seemed to be confusion over when each place was open. The bathroom in the room had minimal privacy, doors for the shower and toilet were made of glass, may be an issue for some. Most things in the room were controlled electronically, we were unable to increase the temperature as it just turned on the air conditioning each time, as a consequence it was cold at night. We had a broken chair in our room, luckily I caught it before there was an accident, it was changed when reported. The hairdryer was very sticky, covered in hair and held together with tape - not sure how an hotel could be 5 star in this case. There was also food on the floor where I was sitting for breakfast. An attention to detail would really help, a combination of things made me rate it 4/5, not hitting the mark of a high class hotel.

A warm welcome awaits you, with offer of a glass bubbly or water, even if you you have to do it yourself, all due to Covid. We requested a runway view, as its normally quieter due to bars/ restaurants/nightlife on the other side, however, its not that busy in Ocean village, that I don’t think it would have mattered in this instance, but we enjoy watching the dolphin boats go out and the planes landing/taking off.
Huge bed, and comfortable. Fantastic blackout curtains in the room. We requested a kettle for our room, which was delivered promptly, although they could do with supplying more milk, we bought a carton from Tesco (Food Co) which has recently opened up in the Marina area.
Breakfast was fantastic, when it arrived, although they need to work on making toast, which was more like warm bread! Each day I had the fruit platter, but always had to ask for clean cutlery to eat it, as my first set I’d already used on another option, maybe this should be a standard thing with the platter?
Due to Covid 19, there is not a daily cleaning service of the rooms or change of towels, this has to be requested by yourself, but was always done when we asked.
Staff always polite.
Slight issue we had when sunbathing by the wheelhouse area, was the bar staff ignored dirty glasses and bottles left by other guest when they came and delivered drinks to us and other guests. Not quite 5* service.
We always enjoy our stay at the Sunborn, with lockdown and re-opening, maybe teething problems which can be ironed out.
Perfect base for the wonderful bars and restaurants nearby.

Sunborn Gibraltar

Stayed here for 4 nights getting away for the first time since COVID19 Travel Restrictions. And for our first time away for so long, I couldn’t have chosen better.

We had a Superyacht King double room which was a very good size for us both. All the usual additions in the room were there, including Safe Box, Tea and Coffee making facilities, TV, table and 2 seats, ironing board, hairdryer and toiletries which were replenished daily. There were sufficient power sockets and USB charging points, for us anyhow. The only thing we couldn’t find was a case stand but as the room wasn’t small, we didn’t miss it as much as we could have. There were large patio doors opening onto the deck and although our room didn’t come with a ‘balcony’ there was a small ledge deep enough to stand comfortable against the rail and enjoy the outside and soak up the atmosphere. Point to note if having a bath is important, our room had a large shower but no bath. Also, if privacy bothers you the bathroom is quite an ‘open’ design with no actual main closing door that we could see. The shower and toilet are located separately with doors but not lockable, however the sink/changing area is open. Also, the double wardrobe door opens from the bathroom side also, fully exposing both the bedroom and bathroom.

There is an abundance of staff when you arrive, from porters, customer service, check in reception and a complementary drink for sipping during check in, which was an extremely quick and efficient experience.

The gym is very good, a good variety of equipment from treadmills etc, loose weights and weight bearing equipment. Everything was clean and in good working order.

Breakfast was in the Barbury restaurant and was a nice open, light and comfortable place to eat. The self-service breakfast has a variety of cold and warm options. Not a criticism, but some customers may think the selection is small but there was a lovey selection of cooked breakfast options, with a chef preparing fresh omelettes, poached eggs etc, fresh fruits, yogurts, fruit juices, cereals (and coconut/soya milk – good to see even if you don’t need it), breads, croissants etc and the main thing all fresh and tasty.

Drinks and cocktails are served in the Barbury Bar and Aqua Bar, lovely and relaxed areas. The pool is very small, fortunately we didn’t have the chance to use it as it wouldn’t take too many occupants to fill it. This also applies to the number of sun loungers and chairs. I think there is a booking system for this – so be aware of this if you are a sun worshipper.

The location if very central and only a short walk from a selection of bars, restaurants, shops and the tourist attractions.

We had a lovely stay with no issues. Staff are all helpful, friendly and try to please

My husband and I are frequent visitors to Gibraltar but this was the first time we've stayed at the Sunborn. We stayed seven nights in a Double Delux room with julliet balcony, overlooking Ocean Village's bars.

The location of the hotel has both pros and cons. Ocean Village is at the heart of a busy bar and restaurant area which is very vibrant during the evenings and weekends and is only a short walk to Casemates Square and Main Street. This does however mean that it is quite noisy at night if you stay in a room overlooking this area.

The room itself was a decent size, split into a bedroom and 'lounge' area and a bathroom by a partition wardrobe/storage area. Decorated with faux crocodile skin panels and marble affect flooring it was very poorly lit and was very dark if the curtains were shut. Unfortunately, due to the room's location, the blinds and curtains needed to remain shut for any degree of privacy and people in the adjacent property can see straight into the rooms.

I also found the walls to be very thin in the hotel which meant it could be noisy when other guests returned to their rooms. Storing our cases proved to be an issue as there was nowhere really to do this and I found the air conditioning to also be poor - the room temperature never dipped below 20°c despite being set for much lower.

On a positive, COVID-19 cleaning measures were very good with a strict mask policy and ample sanitizer stations dotted about the ship. This did mean that a number of amenities were not available, but this was not an issue.

However the pool deck is extremely small and can now only accommodate eight loungers at a time to conform to social distancing guidelines so loungers had to be pre booked and only a maximum of six people were allowed in the pool at any one time.

I found the bed to be very comfortable and surprisingly large and the standard bathroom amenities were from Molton Brown, which was very nice. The rain shower was also lovely.

All in all, our stay at the Sunborn was nice and the hotel has alot to offer visitors but I personally probably wouldn't stay here again. While there were many positives I feel the additional cost for location and brand wasn't really worth it for me.

Dear Juicylucyjames Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay on-board Sunborn. It has to be considered that, being a 142 metres long superyacht with 189 rooms, the spaces are not as big as in a cruise ship. As you know, on the 7th deck we have a restaurant, bar, outdoor plunge pool with summer bar, gymnasium, a spa that has a sauna accessible for our guests, as well as our Wheelhouse for summer sunbathing, with sunbeds both sides totaling 24 beds. At this time due to COVID-19 like the rest of Europe we are restricted to social gathering and we have had to adapt to changes that are forced on us for our guests and staff safety Sunborn is situated within the heart of Ocean village so on some evenings is does become lively mainly on Fridays more so now as we are in the middle of our summer. I'm please to read that all in all your stay here with us was nice and truly hoping you will come back to us in the future if this is the case kindly drop me an email where i along with our teams will do our utmost for you both during your time here. Yours Sincerely Gary Barrett

Having previously stayed and got married at the sunborn (2017) our excitement at returning was short lived ! The door to our room wouldn’t open or shut, the bed was squeaky, toilet roll holder fell off ,the toilet seat was loose curtains wouldn’t close properly etc ,and to top it all off the noise from the bars outside our room kept us awake until 04.30 am ! The breakfast (hot food ) was very poor lukewarm at best so skipped that for next 4 days ! We decided to try and sort all this out on returning to the room and to the sunborns credit they very quickly moved us to a sea view /runway view which was appreciated. The last night we decided to treat ourselves to a meal at la Sala restaurant on deck 3 .We were so disappointed with the quality of the food ,2 Yorkshire puddings you would get from Tesco basics range, none of the food had any taste and we were £102 lighter in the wallet and had better meals the previous 4 nights out in the marina local establishments for around £35-£40 .The staff on the whole were very helpful and nice but the standards were much lower from our previous stay which was incredible and one of our best ever memories ! This is a totally honest review of our stay and for the money just wasn’t worth it on this occasion.

We were massively disappointed by Sunborn in pretty much every way and unfortunately mirrors many of the negative recent reviews, so much so that we checked out after 2 nights even though we had prepaid for a week.

They make such a point of being 5* and that really doesn’t help, in no way is this 5*, whether that be the staff, rooms, service, facilities or restaurant.

The who experience stated with email communication with the GSM prior to our arrival asking for a quiet room away from the lifts.

We checked in to a very cold welcome by the reception team. We headed to our room to only find the assigned room was absolutely adjacent to the lifts which was frustrating when clearly they were not busy.

On heading to bed that first evening, there was excessive noise from outside the lift as other guests said good night to one another which is exactly what we were looking to avoid. This was topped off by the lights in the wardrobe flashing on and off through a glass door. On raising this with reception, we were told that a room change would be needed at 23:00 - not exactly a relaxing start to a holiday! This was all rounded off by reception informing me that we would only have to pay for one room (I should think so too when we were having to move due to poor maintenance issues!!!).

So in the second room, the room was tired and poorly maintained in places. Annoyances were that there is no door to the bathroom so if someone needs to head there at night, there was no highlight in just the bathroom meaning the entire room was lit up!
The bed was also pretty uncomfortable, towels rough none of which fulfilling what I see as basic requirements for a 5* property.

Breakfast service was inconsistent, a completely different service on the 2 mornings, from different coffee, one morning had a timely service, the second taking nearly 40 mins to get breakfast serviced (on questions where breakfast was to be told ‘it’s being prepared!’). The English breakfast was also very greasy.

After the second night we had had enough so we checked out and forfeited the remaining 5 nights as we were not enjoying any aspect of our stay.

The general area of Ocean Village was very underwhelming too, not really what we expected, a lot of very mediocre bars.

I spent a week here, with my son, in September 2020.

Despite all the Covid restrictions, the hotel has managed to create a seamless holiday experience.

The rooms are very comfortable and the electric curtains are great fun! The bed was great and every day the cleaning was of the highest possible order.

I would thoroughly recommend a stay with breakfast as these are huge and very, very tasty.

All the staff on the pool-deck were great and added hugely to the holiday enjoyment in serving ice cold beer and excellent cocktails.

The location of the Yacht is superb with any number of themed restaurants and bars within a very short walking distance. The town is only a 5 minute walk too with an array of eateries at slightly more cost effective prices.

We will certainly return!

Always a warm welcome with a glass of cava on arrival. Staff in reception polite and helpful. Nice toiletries in the bathroom, plenty of towels and comfortable beds. They now offer sun umbrellas if you want to go to the beach. Plenty of choice at breakfast, although they do ask you to book in advance, but who wants to be held to a time when on holiday, breakfast is served now until 1130.
We asked for mugs in our room which we got, unfortunately, one broke whilst I was washing it up, then trying to get another one was impossible. Not enough milk portions for a cuppa, we went to Tesco and got our own milk to keep in the mini bar, which we asked them to clear out, so we could use it for our own milk and bits.
We use The Sunborn for convenience to visit our family and for the night life.
It is only a short journey from the airport, so do not book private transfers, taxi rank right outside the airport/COVID test centre, and costs £8
Masks are encouraged, not enforced, plenty of antibacterial gel available.

Firstly, I love Sunborn Gibraltar, having stayed before and been on board for trips to La Sala previously.

Unfortunately the Covid situation is affecting the usually fantastic service. We were boked half board but there were no tables available for dinner until 9:45pm at the earliest and the restaurant closes at 10pm. No sunbeds were available to book by the pool for the duration of our stay and the earliest we could go to breakfast was 11am.

Dinner at 9:45pm was disappointing - the wine we ordered wasn't available, the ribs my husband ordered were not available, the sea bass he ordered as replacement for the ribs wasn't available and the mousse desert he ordered wasn't available. This was all in the same night. Once the food arrived we asked for Salt, Pepper & Ketchup - this took 15 minutes to arrive as our food was getting cold.

We booked through the Sunborn website as it says one of the advantages is late check out until 3pm where available but this was not available to us.

The people in the room above us were jumping up and down until 1:30am so we ended up calling reception who must have spoken to them as shortly after it stopped.

Such a shame as I really do love The Sunborn as a destination but unfortunately definitely not 5 star service at the moment :(

Just returned from a week and a day last-minute holiday booked on the Sunborn Gibraltar. This is our second time on the Sunborn, and this visit was even better than the first.

The COVID-19 was obviously a concern, but the hotel did an amazing job making us feel safe. They sanitized everything. In the past, breakfast was a buffet service now you book a slot to limit the numbers in the Breakfast Hall at any one time. The staff sanitize the tables and chairs and set the table before you can sit down. To look at the Food and drinks menus, you must scan a QR code on your phone. You may choose from a very healthy or unhealthy selection depending on your conscience, then they bring you loads of delicious food.

The staff really were amazing. Nothing was too much trouble or effort, although I wish they had ignored me on Wednesday when I was ordering my fifth cocktail by the swimming pool.

The Sunborn is at Ocean Village and it is all about location, location, location. There is a magnificent view of the Rock; lots to do and see within easy walking distance. Plenty of shopping, bars, and restaurants on your doorstep. Great restaurants are a “hop, skip and jump” from your front door. I can recommend Thi Vietnamese restaurant and Little Bay. We had a fabulous two-hour long Indian Tapas lunch.  In town, Curry & Sushi is also a superb choice.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for your stay.

Is there tea and coffee available in the rooms?
Answer from JohnG

Yes, as well as free water and a charged ( but reasonably priced) minibar. The teabags, coffee, milk etc are replenished daily. If you want alcoholic drinks, remember that alcohol in Gibraltar is not taxed like it is in the UK meaning that bottles of spirits in the shops are less than half the price of the UK. So we didn't actually touch the minibar.
