My friends and I stayed here and were very pleased with our good fortune to find this hotel. It is located on a quiet little Plaza but is within walking distance to all the major attractions - the palace, museums, great resaturants (especially Carpe Diem around the corner), and of course shopping. The rooms were a good size - we...

San Martin is in a great place for cruising Tapas Bars and chilling out through the day. One can walk to most attractions in Madrid and there are 3 Metro stations within a couple of minutes walk, yet the lacation is incredibly quiet (we did not have the convent bell ringing in our room). Ou room was nothing special. Adequate...

A Hotel with some character in its decoration and layout. From my first email requesting a room over the square to check out, a very pleasant experience in dealing with this hotel. Its pretty central and once you get your bearings you can walk "in the rain" as we found, to just about anywhere in central madrid. Plenty of resturants...

This hotel is in a great location - close to metro stations and not on a busy noisy street. Its decor has not been "Euro-modernized", the rooms are very comfortable and the staff is very nice. Breakfast is excellent and is on the top floor, affording rooftop views of Madrid to the south. If you just have to go to...

The hotel is in a very central position close to the Opera and is a perfect base for exploring Madrids main attractions. We didn't use the metro as everything was easy walking distance. The Hotel is in a quiet Square right next to the Barefoot Royals Monastery but with the double windows there was no noise at all and we...

The hotel is at a perfect location for exploring Madrid. It is clean and tidy, and although we did not use many of the services they provided, what we asked for they were able to help us with. We had a room facing the interior courtyard, and apart from some noisy chairs being moved, this was all we heard, and...

Spent 3 nights here in early September, if you want a hotel with character in a central location this is hard to beat. A standard room is 90 euro and whilst not huge, very good value. A short walk to Plaza Major and all the sites of central Madrid. Surrounded by tapas bars and cafes.

For me, this is the perfect location -- right in the heart of Madrid -- 2 minutes walk to Plaza Sol, 5 minutes to Plaza Mayor, but still quiet and peaceful in the little Plaza San Martin. Hotel has the charm of an older building, but all modern comforts. Will make this my home base again in Madrid.

This hotel was okay. We had a small, dark room that over looked the court yard and the other three walls of the hotel. I didn't really think the service was that great either. The one nice thing about this hotel was that it was very centrally located right next to Puerto del Sol.

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
