The hostel is very well located, clean with friendly staff. The rooms are small but comfortable and well equiped. One disadvantage is the noise from the city and the Gran Via. If you need a quiet room, this is not the best choice. And there is no air conditioning. We didn't need it, but I can imagine you'll need it...

Hostal Santillan have just opened some new rooms on floor 5 of the building - so ours was brand new. It was all you needed for a great stay in Madrid - brilliant location on the Gran Via (the noise was blocked out at night with the shutter closed), clean, comfortable - excellent quality. I can't recommend this highly enough...

Very nice hostel. Clean, comfortable, with an extremely helpful staff. Furniture is essential, but functional and very well care about by the staff. Location is also extremely good for visiting the city, as you're right in the middle of Calle Gran Via. The only negative note is the lack of breakfast, as they do not have an area suitable to...

Great if you are looking for a comfortable, clean, and nice place to stay. Excellent location for access to Metro and attractions. The hostal is at Gran Via but on the 8th floor so not noisy at all. Private single room is small but very comfortable. Great staff, they let me keep my bags their for a few hours after...

Stayed at Sanitllan with my wife and 2 young daughters in a triple-bed room (for 70 euro/night). The location on Gran Via is perfect for walking and for metro connections up to Barajas. On the 7th floor there were no noise issues at all. Also, no issue of cigarette smell mentioned in other reviews. On the contrary, this is one...

A basic, but good place to stay in Madrid. It would have been nice to have air conditioning, a computer with Internet, and news channels on the tv, though. No great eating spots around.

this hostal has a great location in madrid and it's very close to the center as well as a few metros. The room was clean enough, overall everything was good. service was great. Although there was one slight problem with the tvs, you couldn't get a decent picture at all, it was all wavy lines but other than that everything...

Pro: -Great location in the heart of Madrid -cheap -no smoking -relatively clean Contra: -Despite the no-smoking policy, there is a strong cigarette stench in the whole hostal. Maybe smoking staff?

stayed here for a weekend two weeks ago after reading the great reviews written here. I have to say that I do not agree at all. My main problem with the place was the strong and lingering smell of stale cigarette smoke in the hostal. Neither I nor my boyfriend smoke so we noticed this immediately. We tried to get...

We’re really very sorry of having that problem happened. We can guarantee that our room cleaners do not smoke while cleaning rooms. It could be that the previous occupants of that room were smokers. We all know that the smell of cigarette smoke stayed longer and enters in every parts of the room. Probably room cleaner have forgotten to have...

Went to Madrid with a friend where we stayed in one of the rooms with two twin beds and a private bathroom. The place was clean and fit our needs. We stayed on the 8th floor overlooking the main street (Gran Via). The only thing I would reccomend is that if you are a light sleeper to take earplugs and...

Staying in Malasana

Neighbourhood Profile
Hip bars and galleries, independent theaters and music venues, young people with tattoos and funky hair, narrow winding streets — this is Malasaña. Near the center, Plaza Dos de Mayo is a gathering of friends outside bars, dog owners, artists under craft tents, and creative types with notebooks and sketchpads on the plaza’s benches. It may not be as neat and tidy as many other parts of the city, but this only adds to the Malasaña edge. Shops and bars here range from hippie-crunchy to upscale trendy, and on weekends, the streets are bustling around the clock as the nightlife progresses from dinner to bar to disco to late-night food. On the west side of the neighbourhood is the subdistrict called Conde Duque, named after a large pink fort in its center that has been converted into a cultural center for exhibitions and performances. Prettier yet just as edgy, this intimate corner of Malasaña is home to a young international community.
