The vibe is great - I got to know so many people staying at the hostel and it really did feel like a family by the time I left. They do free supper every night from volunteers so you get a taste of countries all around the world. They do a bar crawl every night which is super nice (check...

I needed a bed for one night in central Madrid. Not only were the staff at Sungate wonderfully helpful, but the charge included an evening meal and breakfast Now I'm not your normal hostel visitor as I'm in my 60's, but I love this place. The beds were comfortable and the location is perfect as it is just off of...

As I am studying abroad from Madrid, I was looking for a place to stay while I was searching for an apartment. The hostel I had stayed at for two nights at the beginning of my stay was dead quiet, and I had a really hard time meeting anyone. Therefore, I decided to give Sungate a try. The minute I...

I've been lucky to travel and stay in a number of hostels over the past few months, and I can say with some certainty that Sungate is a league ahead of anywhere I've previously encountered. Friendly staff (Polina & Mike made particular impressions, but it's unfair to single them out as everyone was fantastic), great rooms (single beds, not bunks;...

The first thing I was asked by Cris at the front desk when I arrived was "are you hungry?, we have some free dinner. I realized then that I was gonna feel at home at this hostel. Everyone that works here makes sure that you are always comfortable and engaged with the other guests. Free dinners and organized activities every...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
