Neither. Benidorm is made up of two big bays. Looking out to sea Levante (which means sunrise) is the one on the left which is where most of the big hotels and the British tend to holiday. Then you have the old town with a headland in the middle. And the Poniente beach (meaning sunset) is on your right. Both bays in total measure about 7kms. El Palmeral is one road back from the sea front on the Poniente side, about three quarters of the way along the bay. It is a good 45mins walk to the old town, but the bus runs along the seafront and will take you into the old town or into the Levante area for 1.50 euros. The bus also comes back or a cab is about 8 euros. The Poniente area is much quieter with a much bigger beach than the Levante end. There aren't any big bars with entertainment, but there are lots of little bars and good restaurants. It tends to have many more Spanish on holiday there and other nationalities as well, though fewer British. I can highly recommend El Palmeral for location, rooms, staff and food but not if you want a busy hotel surrounded by bars and karaoke!
