Cave hotel where I had alway promised myself a stay. Great huge room all carved out of rock - even the bathroom sink. Furniture all in keeping and bed very comfortable. Service was delightful. Lighting could have been better as I couldn't see to put makeup on, but it was in keeping with the overall ambience. Got a little annoyed...

HOTEL’S FAVOURITE REVIEW
Reviewed 21 January 2017

We were looking forward to a long weekend in Puglia. Our Italien friends have also suggested a day in Matera. The city is unbelievable. And this hotel is probably one of the best places we have experienced. Families lived in these caves since 13th century, together with their animals. In 1952 Italian Govt. built houses for the inhabitants to move...

Dear Guest, Thank you so much for your review and kind words, very much appreciated. Since you've enjoyed our different kind of hospitality, we strongly suggest you to try our sister property Sextantio Albergo Diffuso in Santo Stefano di Sessanio, a unique experience too. Hoping to welcome you again in the near future, warm regards from the whole staff!

A really unforgettable experience made special by the attentive staff of Sextantio. The ancient caves are quite a shock, but so very confortable. We have another albergo diffuso in Piedmont, so we always travel to see what the others do, and combine learning with vacation. Friendliness, cleanliness and professional behaviour do the rest here. If you go to Matera, you...

One of the most unique hotels I have ever stayed at. The service is amazing, rooms are so unique and romantic, I did not want to leave. The rooms look exactly like in the pics on their website. Most of the rooms open to the amazing panoramic view of the raw nature. I would say it is a number one...

Fascinating place to stay in the heart of Matera's sassi. Developed and operated by a group committed to restoring traditional venues in Italy's abandoned towns and villages. Expensive, but you can see what your $$$ are supporting -- the renovation of the rooms is understated and beautiful. We visited off-season and were fortunate to be ungraded to a larger room...

I will always keep the memories of this beautiful place. But the people there made our stay even more wonderful. Paola and Marco at the reception were so friendly and helpful, they always made sure everything was ok. It was my surprise birthday celebration, I had the chance to have a candlelight dinner. Thank you to the cook Brunella, it...

My girlfriend and I stayed for 3 nights and it was simple amazing. Our room cave was incredibly romantic, even had candles lite when we arrived! The food in the town was great but the best meal was always the impressive breakfast each morning. A big thanks to Pietro for being so welcoming and always remembering how we liked our...

We were very satisfied with our stay from arrival to check out. First class service from wonderful staff during our 3 night stay. We were pleasantly surprised to find our room had been upgraded which made our stay more memorable. And the view of the valley is stunning. The cave room is a unique hotel experience and every effort has...

This place is beyond words. My favorite of whole Italy. (I've been three times). You NEED to go here at least once in your life. Best experience of life. The rooms are extremely clean and extremely amazing. Bigger and even more astonishing than pictured. From the comfy bed to the superb bathtub to everything. This place needs a 6 star...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Matera can be found in the south of Italy and is world famous because of its Sassi quarters, a stunning and well preserved example of a village where hundreds of caves were turned into dwellings, churches and palaces. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, the Sassi represent a unique hamlet throughout Italy: the earliest inhabitants date back to the stone and bronze age, in the middle ages it boasted several monastic communities and later became a vibrant farming centre, owing to the rich harvests from the surrounding hills and plains. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is placed in the oldest part of the Sassi quarters, the CIVITA, facing the spectacular Murgia park and its rock-hewn churches. It comprises 18 rooms (some of them exceeding 160m²) and an ancient church, the "Cripta della Civita," now used as a common area, all renovated to retain their original features. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is situated in the historical heart of Matera. The 18 caves have been renovated in full respect of the local heritage. Each cave reveals the original shape and materials. The interior design, the respectful and minimalistic approach of Sextantio is reflected in the plain furniture elements. The guests will experience a particular atmosphere evoking the cultural and human history of the Sassi of Matera. ... more   less
