Fascinating place to stay in the heart of Matera's sassi. Developed and operated by a group committed to restoring traditional venues in Italy's abandoned towns and villages. Expensive, but you can see what your $$$ are supporting -- the renovation of the rooms is understated and beautiful. We visited off-season and were fortunate to be ungraded to a larger room...

HOTEL’S FAVOURITE REVIEW
Reviewed 21 January 2017

We were looking forward to a long weekend in Puglia. Our Italien friends have also suggested a day in Matera. The city is unbelievable. And this hotel is probably one of the best places we have experienced. Families lived in these caves since 13th century, together with their animals. In 1952 Italian Govt. built houses for the inhabitants to move...

I will always keep the memories of this beautiful place. But the people there made our stay even more wonderful. Paola and Marco at the reception were so friendly and helpful, they always made sure everything was ok. It was my surprise birthday celebration, I had the chance to have a candlelight dinner. Thank you to the cook Brunella, it...

The rooms are extremely clean and extremely amazing. Bigger and even more astonishing than pictured. From the comfy bed to the superb bathtub to everything. This place needs a 6 star...

This is simply the best hotel I've ever stayed in. We were upgraded to a superior room which was fabulous. Beautiful candles, rustic furniture, super comfy bed, lovely free standing bath. It was perfect. The views of the national park outside the bedroom door are wonderful. Then we get to the breakfast .....a feast. We'd get up early so we...

My Daughter and I travelled from Philadelphia to the region of Puglia last March 2016 and chose to stay at Sextantio Le Grotto in Matera! My 16 Daughter had found this unique 'hotel' on Pinterest and ran to show me how amazing it looked! We booked it for March 2016. My apologies for such a late review, but a 5...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Matera can be found in the south of Italy and is world famous because of its Sassi quarters, a stunning and well preserved example of a village where hundreds of caves were turned into dwellings, churches and palaces. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, the Sassi represent a unique hamlet throughout Italy: the earliest inhabitants date back to the stone and bronze age, in the middle ages it boasted several monastic communities and later became a vibrant farming centre, owing to the rich harvests from the surrounding hills and plains. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is placed in the oldest part of the Sassi quarters, the CIVITA, facing the spectacular Murgia park and its rock-hewn churches. It comprises 18 rooms (some of them exceeding 160m²) and an ancient church, the "Cripta della Civita," now used as a common area, all renovated to retain their original features. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is situated in the historical heart of Matera. The 18 caves have been renovated in full respect of the local heritage. Each cave reveals the original shape and materials. The interior design, the respectful and minimalistic approach of Sextantio is reflected in the plain furniture elements. The guests will experience a particular atmosphere evoking the cultural and human history of the Sassi of Matera. ... more   less
