My Daughter and I travelled from Philadelphia to the region of Puglia last March 2016 and chose to stay at Sextantio Le Grotto in Matera! My 16 Daughter had found this unique 'hotel' on Pinterest and ran to show me how amazing it looked! We booked it for March 2016. My apologies for such a late review, but a 5...

This hotel is an experience in itself. Our suite was wonderful, breakfast memorable and hospitality outstanding. The whole city is well worth a visit ...so many streets with their own character. Quiet and beautiful

The service that I received before I arrived was just superb, everyone at the hotel was so helpful and everything I asked for was accommodated. The service when we arrived was even better, everyone was so friendly and professional and they all did everything to make our stay so special. We were lucky enough to stay in Cave 13 which...

Walking into our cave (15) we couldn't help but be amazed as this was not like anywhere we had ever stayed before. Our cave was stunning and we loved all of the candles that had been lit around the room. Prior to travelling we read all of the great reviews and now completely understand why this is the case -...

From the jaw-dropping first impression to check-out this is the only place to stay in Matera. Candle lit room photos do not do justice to this magical place perched at the edge of the canyon with fine views and a room which offered quiet peaceful lodging run by a delightful and very helpful staff. We parked in the main part...

This is a special place. Our cave was actually 4 connected caves, lit by piles of candles in every nook and cranny. Incredibly atmospheric. If you are looking for a once-in-a-lifetime, never-to-be-forgotten experience, this *is* for you. Breakfast is served at the hotel (in a converted cave, of course). The outdoor seating area is fabulous for after dinner socializing and...

With all that is out there to do and see it is sometimes tough to really stand out. This hotel, it's staff, and Old Metera exceed and impress! I can't say enough about the excellent staff. From the moment we arrived until they waved us off, they treated us as if we were the most important guests of the day....

Walking into our cave home took my breathe away. I am so impressed with the care and detail taken to restore these caves. Every detail is amazing. The handmade soaps are wonderful! The breakfast is delicious and abundant. The staff was helpful and friendly. The bed was comfortable. We could not have asked for a more perfect stay and we...

We were looking forward to a long weekend in Puglia. Our Italien friends have also suggested a day in Matera. The city is unbelievable. And this hotel is probably one of the best places we have experienced. Families lived in these caves since 13th century, together with their animals. In 1952 Italian Govt. built houses for the inhabitants to move...

Traveling you get a chance to see different places, with different features and levels of luxury and often you find yourself make comparisons. Here is different, this hotel can not be compared with anyone else because it is undoubtedly unique. Surely Matera, the stones and the magical atmosphere especially in the winter do their part but is the philosophy behind...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Matera can be found in the south of Italy and is world famous because of its Sassi quarters, a stunning and well preserved example of a village where hundreds of caves were turned into dwellings, churches and palaces. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, the Sassi represent a unique hamlet throughout Italy: the earliest inhabitants date back to the stone and bronze age, in the middle ages it boasted several monastic communities and later became a vibrant farming centre, owing to the rich harvests from the surrounding hills and plains. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is placed in the oldest part of the Sassi quarters, the CIVITA, facing the spectacular Murgia park and its rock-hewn churches. It comprises 18 rooms (some of them exceeding 160m²) and an ancient church, the "Cripta della Civita," now used as a common area, all renovated to retain their original features. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is situated in the historical heart of Matera. The 18 caves have been renovated in full respect of the local heritage. Each cave reveals the original shape and materials. The interior design, the respectful and minimalistic approach of Sextantio is reflected in the plain furniture elements. The guests will experience a particular atmosphere evoking the cultural and human history of the Sassi of Matera. ... more   less
