A hotel extraordinaire: the stay there was way more just a hotel stay. Rooms are super comfortable and stylish, staff could not do more to make us feel welcome. Breakfast with plenty of local products a homemade pastries is a highlight.

What a wonderful stay! The front desk staff were extremely welcoming and provided a wealth of information. We were upgraded to a superior room which was out of this world. Separate bath area, separate shower area and a heating system that leaves you comfortable no matter what time of day. The location in the sassiest is an easy walk up... More

We stayed in cave dwelling #3. A bit noisy since close to reception. But otherwise superb. Spacious room with very accommodating staff. Never been anywhere quite like it. Would definitely recommend this to you.

This has to be one of the most unique and special places I have ever stayed in. Matera is breathtakingly beautiful and this hotel in my view is THE place to stay. What I loved is the fact that they have created luxury in a cave yet retained the history of the Sassi by using reclaimed materials. We did not... More

We stayed three nights in this magical hotel ...and city. The cave room was just magical ( we were fortunate to be in room 4 which is next to the breakfast room). Our room was 1400 square feet of wonder. A private soaking bath and huge entry were just a few of the amenities. We opted for the cooking class... More

We stayed here for one night as part of our honeymoon. To say that it was an amazing experience would be an understatement. Our room was absolutely stunning in every way, with enough luxury to feel utterly spoilt yet enough of the old cave and authenticity left to be thrown back in time. The location is perfect as the cave... More

We stayed only one night to experience a rock cave and we really enjoyed it but one night is enough. This was an amazing experience with 2 candle lit caves and a walk in shower but it is quite expensive and rather dark. There is no restaurant for dinner but breakfast was excellent with a great choice and served in... More

The rooms really are Pre-historic caves, dug into the rock by the pre-historic Troglodytes. But with WiFi, telephone, great bed and linens, shower and tub, fully electrified, climate controlled, etc. The breakfast, snacks, wines...all terrific. The staff was perfect...just the right amount of help without over-doing it...from start to finish. They recommended Ristorante Baccanti, a five minute walk and superb!

The rooms have been beautifully renovated to be luxurious without losing any of the sense of being in cave in a bygone era. Discretely lit by concealed lights and candles (take a screen or a head torch for reading by or doing your makeup!), but with a 21st century shower and bathtub, comfortable bed, and fast Wifi. Our room (number... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Matera can be found in the south of Italy and is world famous because of its Sassi quarters, a stunning and well preserved example of a village where hundreds of caves were turned into dwellings, churches and palaces. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, the Sassi represent a unique hamlet throughout Italy: the earliest inhabitants date back to the stone and bronze age, in the middle ages it boasted several monastic communities and later became a vibrant farming centre, owing to the rich harvests from the surrounding hills and plains. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is placed in the oldest part of the Sassi quarters, the CIVITA, facing the spectacular Murgia park and its rock-hewn churches. It comprises 18 rooms (some of them exceeding 160m²) and an ancient church, the "Cripta della Civita," now used as a common area, all renovated to retain their original features. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is situated in the historical heart of Matera. The 18 caves have been renovated in full respect of the local heritage. Each cave reveals the original shape and materials. The interior design, the respectful and minimalistic approach of Sextantio is reflected in the plain furniture elements. The guests will experience a particular atmosphere evoking the cultural and human history of the Sassi of Matera. ... more   less
