We stayed here mainly because of the location, as it is beyond question, very central. Our room was fine but we think we were just lucky by reading some of the previous reviews & it was cleaned properly every day. However, we had no option but to pay for meals that were far below par as this was the only option we had with our travel agent. Maybe it's the only way they can get anybody into the dining room in the evenings!? The breakfasts were just about passable as we chose very carefully, but the evening meals were something else! The cheapest of "ingredients"! It was like bad school dinners! I won't go into too much detail as I could be here for ages, suffice to say - cheap bland food - tinned fruit cocktail - very mean portions (maybe that was just as well really!) everything lukewarm (yes we know it's traditional in certain places on continental Europe, but in our opinion, if something is meant to be cold it should be cold, & if something is meant to be hot the least we'd expect is to have it served on a hot plate as this might help a little!) We had to eat out quite a lot to subsidize the very poor quality food at the Ascot Hotel, & had exceptional Italian fare in several restaurants at quite reasonable prices, so fail to see how the standard was not better in a centrally located hotel like the Ascot. There were at least two dozen restaurants within a very short distance, but as we had paid for evening meals within the holiday price, having to eat out so much resulted in a lot of extra unwelcome expense! That aside, we have to say any of the staff we came across were very nice & the owner was very much "hands on," really friendly & helpful not only to guests, as she was trying to help people get extra tours & went beyond on this. We also witnessed two bikers having had one of their bikes destroyed by another vehicle (luckily it was parked up so no injuries) & she was giving them all the help she could. So, definitely potential there because of the good points, but things definitely need to improve in certain areas. …
We were bounced to this hotel after another cancelled 48 hours before we were due to arrive. The rooms were spotless, the staff kind and helpful. We really felt welcome. Breakfasts were sensible and varied, we didn't eat in as we wanted to try as many places in the town as we could. When we left the staff made us packed breakfasts with extra Halloween treats for our 3 and 5 year olds. It was a very kind thing to do and was greatly appreciated. If we go back to Sorrento we would go back to Hotel Acot.
Booked through Jet2 and after reading reviews, we were sceptical about our stay. Rooms were very old however they were clean & cleaned everyday. Bathrooms were great - clean, potentially redone, constant hot water. Location of the hotel is perfect, albeit situated on a main road, luckily our balcony faced the back of the hotel so the noise was reduced. We had breakfast at the hotel but steered clear of the dinner option after reading the reviews & experiencing the breakfast, it was OK. The hot food was lukewarm so after the first day, I stuck to pastries. If we were travelling to Sorrento again, I would consider staying here again as it wasn't actually that bad. Perfect for what we needed it for - Location/Somewhere to wash & sleep!
We stayed at the Hotel Ascot for 1 week. Starting with the positives... The hotel is in a good location. Turn right out of reception and you are steps away from the Corso Italia; the main road in Sorrento. The garden and pool area are pleasant enough (although there is a lot of traffic noise but this is only to be expected in a busy place such as Sorrento). The bar is reasonably priced and the lady who runs the bar is efficient with a great sense of humour. Unfortunately, that's about it for the positives. This is sold as a 4 star hotel. An Italian 4 star can be roughly equivalent to a 3 star in the UK. At most, the Ascot is a 1, or at a push, a 2 star hotel. It is very dated and in dire need of a renovation. Everything looks like it has seen better days. Even little things like plastic plants rather than real ones dotted around the place give a feeling of penny pinching and overall cheapness. They even have a thompson gold award from 1995 on their wall, which is unintentionally hilarious. As per other reviews, we found the same issue with incredibly thin walls and zero to no sound proofing. You can hear people in nearby rooms and corridors, internal phones ringing early in the morning, and if you have a room that is close too or facing the main road the traffic noise is pretty intrusive, despite the doors being double glazed. Although again some traffic noise is to be expected in a busy place, the hotel appears to have done nothing to mitigate this problem. Our room on the third floor did not have adequate working air conditioning when we arrived. Housekeeping had left the shutters on the doors open leaving the room exposed to the sun all day so the room felt like a greenhouse. We asked for it to be looked at, an engineer came, fiddled with it, announced it was fixed and left. It wasn't fixed. The little air that was coming from the vent wasn't cold, and it was being produced at such a feeble rate that just being in the room would raise the temperature to an unacceptable level. Sorrento was also experiencing unusually high temperatures of 35 degrees plus, together with 80% humidity for the first half of our stay, so our first night was absolutely horrific. The heat was so bad it actually made us sick for the first couple of days which compromised the rest of our trip. We asked for our a/c to be looked at again, (we asked several times over the course of our stay) but nobody turned up. We asked for a fan instead but again nobody turned up. We asked for a fan for a second time and eventually received a fan on a stand that was both ancient and caked in dust. We cleaned it ourselves and turned it on, but the blades had warped so much that they rattled against the cage and the stand creating a noise at such a volume that sleep would have been impossible. At this point we lost patience and went to a local shop and bought our own fan as the hotel were so unaccommodating and unwilling to help in anyway. Fortunately, our fan made sleep just about tolerable, however overall the room and the hotel itself was unbearably hot. There was nowhere you could cool down. When we raised the air conditioning fault on checkout (as staff appeared to hide from us for the rest of the stay) we were told that a part had been ordered, fitted and therefore our air conditioning had indeed been fixed. This was blatantly and demonstrably not true. I'd hate to see what other people had to put up with. The bathroom is functional. The shower is fine, with average pressure, but it's very small and you do find yourself knocking the cubicle constantly. The soap in the room is in an ancient plastic pump bottle that looks like it is years old. It’s extremely odd. The extraction is also poor and steam from the shower would counter act the poor air conditioning in the room meaning it was impossible to cool down after a shower. The bed is possibly the hardest we've ever experienced. It is incredibly uncomfortable, two single beds pushed together with a scratchy plastic cover underneath the sheet and no double topper on top so you cannot lie in the middle without feeling you are going to fall through. The room is made up every day, but it's not really cleaned. There's a thick layer of dust on the headboard and fingerprints and stains all over shiny surfaces. The floor was filthy, to the extent that the soles of your feet turn black from walking around the room. Cups that we had used were never replaced or cleaned, both ceramic and plastic. The room is provided with a kettle but no tea or coffee. Housekeeping is a fundamental part of a hotel stay. This isn’t an AirBnB, and for it to be so bad is unforgivable. The room had two sets of doors which opened onto the same terrace that wrapped around the room. We only really used the terrace for drying clothes & pool towels as there's too much noise from the street to actually spend any time there. One of the sets of doors didn't shut flush properly and flexed against it's fitting, meaning any heavy traffic (the hotel is on a bus route) made the doors vibrate. There is a sun terrace on the 4th floor, however it's not that well used and on the corridor to the entrance to the terrace there's a hole in the ceiling with exposed pipes which have been 'fixed' by putting an empty plastic drinks bottle in there to plug the gap. Obviously this drips whatever is in the pipes onto the floor which was disgusting, so we decided to avoid that for the rest of our stay. It's a shame as it could be a really nice area with so much potential – great views and a little quieter as further from the traffic. The staff (with one exception) seem like they do not want to be there and varied between tolerating our presence to being outright rude. There was very little in the way of help or assistance with any issues we had. We asked one night for a taxi to be ordered for us over an hour in advance as we had a table booked at a restaurant in the neighbouring town and were told that it wasn't a problem and it would be sorted. An hour later we came down to reception expecting a taxi to be at least on it's way, but the person at reception hadn't even attempted to call a taxi for us. They spent the next 20 minutes on the phone until one finally turned up. It meant we were over 30 minutes late through no fault of our own. We don't mind if things are lost in translation but this person clearly had no idea what we had asked for and just agreed to it without asking for a bit of clarification. Food wise, we intentionally avoided eating the evening meal here as previous reviews for this hotel, plus a visit to Sorrento a few years ago led us to suspect the food wasn't going to be great. However, the couple we travelled with did eat there and confirmed our suspicions, as did other guests we spoke to. Unfortunately, Jet2 only offer this hotel on a half board capacity so you have no choice but to pay for something you are not going to use. Breakfast is certainly an experience. Without question the worst we have encountered in any hotel stay to date. It consists of ‘hot items’, breads, cheeses, meats, pastries and desserts left over from the night before. I understand hotels recycle a lot of the unused food, but just placing a tiramisu on a tray next to the juices is both lazy and strange. The coffee from the machine is instant nescafé style. You are in Italy, having instant coffee just smacks of cheapness. The pastries are not too bad, but the times we had breakfast the bread we had was going stale, and the toaster requires at least three passes through to actually toast the bread. We tried the hot breakfast items once, and it was a barely warm, slimy tasteless mess – it was hard to tell what it was actually supposed to be. The restaurant is situated in a windowless basement of the hotel and to be blunt it's a little depressing, like eating in a school canteen. There's also no variety - it's the same thing day after day. We actually gave up on breakfast after the second day and had breakfast out for the remainder of the holiday. The food was that bad that by day 2 just the thought of facing another meal in there turned our stomachs. The overall service we received from Jet2 was very good. Both outbound and inbound flights went smoothly. I would urge them to consider removing the Ascot from their roster as it really does tarnish what was otherwise a great experience. Overall, I can't in good conscience recommend this hotel to anyone. Without exaggeration, the Ascot is the worst hotel we've ever stayed in, in over 40 years combined of travelling. It is absolutely, unforgivably awful. It’s hard to believe on reflection that we actually paid money to stay here. Please take note of the more honest reviews here - it really is that bad.…
We came on a half board basis as we thought the price was even good enough for just bed and breakfast given the reviews of the evening meal. Our room 308 was very comfortable, with comfortable bed, good fresh linen, however the pillows were rock hard but found there were softer ones in the wardrobe. There was a kettle but no tea bags, coffee or spoon etc, luckily we brought our own. Strangely enough the cleaner never once washed the cups. Great balcony with a sea view. Busy road in front of hotel but with windows closed and air con on you could hardly hear it. Bathroom was a good size and the shower was extremely good, copious amounts of hot water almost instantly. Breakfast was okay, something for everyone. Dinner, thankfully we had read the reviews so we’re prepared! How a hotel chef, in a country full of delicious fresh vegetables can turn out meals like this amazes me! We stayed to try the food on our first night, starter we chose was seafood risotto, I can only describe it as a muddy coloured mess on a plate, it was disgusting. Main course was prawn and avocado salad, not much damage you can do to this, dessert tiramisu- oh dear! We found a delightful restaurant around the corner where we ate the rest of the time, delicious food at a good price! Staff, most of them are very welcoming and friendly. A big shout out to the lady serving in the bar, she was funny and very friendly. Good sun terrace on the roof. If we return to Sorrento we will definitely stay here again as the hotel is so very central, easy to get to the station etc, however, hopefully just B&B!…
I am here at the moment (15 October 2022). The hotel is ideally situated at the end of the pedestrian area of Sorrento and a 5 minute stroll along the street to Tasso Square. It is basic and adequate but the food is inedible. I'm here with a Travel Department group and most of us have decided to eat out for the remainder of the week. We have had to send food back to the kitchen every night and have been subsisting on salads which can't be ruined by bad cooking. For an Italian hotel surrounded by numerous lovely restaurants it's hard to understand such poor quality of food.
We visited this hotel three years ago and thought it reasonable, but the change in that time is unbelievable. Yes it was clean and room was serviced every day shower was dilapidated and could not be adjusted and had to be hand held, one day there was no hot water at all in the morning due to a “ boiler problem”. The food!!! Breakfast was ok but no choice of eggs or tinned mushrooms on 4 days cereals lowest quality Evening meals were awful l agree with all the comments of other reviewers, The lowest point being one sausage which had been cooked sliced open and some cheese put inside and re grilled until it was inedible with Smash and broccoli boiled to mush, my wife had a couple of mouthfuls of the fish before leaving it and was ill in the night. The amount of food that was being sent back was incredible. Like other reviewers we started to eat out in the evenings. As for it being a supposedly 4star hotel no way. I shall be writing to my tour operator in a similar manner to complain.…
We stayed in this hotel for 1 week in September. I agree with the reviews regarding the evening meal, we tried it twice but as there are so many lovely places to eat in Sorrento we decided not to bother again. The breakfast was really good with plenty of choice. The staff were lovely and very welcoming. Yes the rooms are dated but ours was spotless and cleaned every day with fresh towels. The bed was comfy and the shower was very powerful. Our room overlooked the hotel next door so was quiet on an evening. The location is brilliant, only a short walk from the centre. We would happily stay again.
Got back yesterday, yes the room is spacious and clean the bed is very hard the shower is very small if you are 6ft plus and big ish build then the shower is not for you. When arriving we was greeted by a miserable member of staff that didn’t seem very helpful, “hi could you tell me where the pool is” reply “yes there” followed by a point, could be a language barrier but why put him in front of house if struggles. Breakfast is ok scrambled egg toast fruit pastries cereal and staff helpful. However evening meal was not up to standards food was sent back from guests with a comment the chef does not listen. We tried the food twice and did not eat it all and had to eat out anyway so we gave up and ate out thereafter. Take extra money with you to compensate eating out as you will need to. I only wish I read reviews before booking as I would of chose another one it’s definitely not worth the 4 stars as the front of their building…
Been to Sorrento a good few times but this was first time at the Ascot hotel. It is in a good location and is a very clean hotel. The staff were helpful and did there best to help. The breakfast was good for this kind of moderate hotel but the evening meal was very poor. We did try a couple but we decided to eat out the rest of the week. We usually book bed and breakfast but this option wasn't available so we ended up booking half board so thought we would try the evening meal. The rooms are basic and on the small side but are kept very clean. I would return to the Ascot hotel but only on a bed and breakfast option. Sorrento is all about the restraunts and eating out and the hotel food was just not good enough in the evening. Enjoyed our stay at the Ascot and would recommend this hotel for bed and breakfast only.…
