Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.

Stayed here for 4 nights over New Year. The hotel is in a great location- not too far from the train/bus station. Far enough from all the hustle and bustle of the centre that it’s peaceful at night but also within walking distance to everything. All of the staff were lovely, the

We enjoyed our brief stay at the Hotel Mascagni. The lobby area is pleasant. The breakfast area is large with many options. Our room was very clean with a balcony looking out over the neighboring area. We had a hot water pot and plenty of spce to spread out.

We were in Rome for 4 days so purchased the Roma Pass -- all city metro, busses and trams, 2 big attractions and discounted for others -- for Eur36 per adult for 72 hours. Good value as we travelled extensively by bus and metro. Kids under 18 are free for most attractions and travel, so that was good. Ordering the Roma Pass online takes 3-4 days to sort out, but if you go to any of the official PIT tourist offices, you can buy it there and then; that's what i did. We purchased online tickets for the Vatican, knowing full well how long the lines were, both for security and purchase on the day. Interestingly what we did not know is that access to the Vatican Museums is separate to that of St Peter's and that we would have to queue up twice. On the walk up from the Metro to the Vatican City, you are "greeted" by a number of people representing tour guides and one from Maya Tours offered a tour of the Vatican Museums and access to St Peter's avoiding the second queue was interesting. The cost of the tour -- and back door access to St Peters -- was Eur20 per adult (Eur12 for kids i think); it was cheaper that the official access and tour prices if we added up the cost of the online ticket and tour together, so we thought it was a pretty good deal. It turned out to be just that. Our tour guide was excellent. So I would definitely recommend buying the VM tickets online and hooking up with Maya Tours to get the tour and access to St Peters. Having said that, the staff at the hotel were super helpful, so probably would have told me a lot of this information anyway
