We booked this hotel after reading the reviews on TA and were not disappointed. It is like a little retreat amid the bustling capital that is just outside the gates! The staff were what made it. The two guys at breakfast and happy hour were extremely friendly and such fun without losing their professionalism. The reception staff were also lovely...

After a 3 week trip in Italy our final night was to be in Rome for the final farewell. Being the organiser for the trip I left the last night in Rome to my travelling partner. Well what beautiful surprise this boutique hotel was. Upon arrival you are greeted by a typical what you expect Italian gate. Press the buzzer...

In the bustling streets of Trastevere hide this gem of a hotel. The former convent has pleasant rooms around the central courtyard with a sun terrace up stairs. Breakfast was great although the steps down into the bar / breakfast room were a little dangerous. Staff were great with a 24 hour presence.

Beautiful boutique hotel! The service is amazing. All staff members treat you like a king! The ONLY complaint/caution.... do NOT get a suite with a "sloping roof" if you are over 5'7". I don't know how many times I cursed because I bashed my head on the ceiling. Also, any taller than 5'8" and you'd have to bend over to...

We really enjoyed staying at this hotel. We discovered this area of Rome some 5 years ago and wanted to stay there on our visit. This hotel was really exceptional and quiet in the middle of a bustling area. The staff were helpful and pleasant, the rooms were very clean and the breakfast was very good. We would certainly recommend...

For the first time ever, we discovered a place that was even better than the promise on the web site. The Travastere area is like a small ancient Italian town within the City of Rome. The hotel is perfectly located and neatly hidden behind a gated entrance in the back streets of Travastere. Once through the gates of this converted...

We have just returned from a Rome vacation and everything about Hotel Santa Maria is wonderful. The location is great because you get away from the noise and bustle of the city. The staff are friendly and terrific. The atmosphere is incredible. We loved sitting out in the little courtyard with the orange trees while drinking wine in the evenings!...

Staying in Trastevere

Neighbourhood Profile
Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.
