41 steps to climb inside the building before you reach the top room. Broken and split toilet seat meant sitting at an angle while using the toilet. Pillows and bed linen were definitely not clean and had clearly been reused. Shower cubicle was tiny and the flow of water from the shower very poor. It is clear the owner’s focus is on making money, charging over €135 per night, and not the guests.

Response from Franca Vernazzani, Proprietario at Casa Capellini - Rooms and Apartments
Responded 24 Oct 2023
An untrue review, the only review of a terrible person, a resentful person, a strange person; an untrue review. Read the Airbnb reviews of people who stayed at Casa Capellini; those are authentic.

My mom and I rented two bedrooms and two baths with a shared hallway space (we stayed in late September). It was very private and felt like a little apartment. We absolutely loved our stay here! The view from my room looked out across the town and the ocean. My moms room had a large balcony overlooking the street. We got food several times from the co-op and sat on the balcony people watching while we ate. We also had breakfast at the little place across the street, which was very good. The owners were helpful and friendly. I would love to come back here some day.

Loved the apt. Was everything we needed: great view, clean, decent kitchen and wonderful host. Just down the stairs from the church at top piazza. Don't worry about bells, you won't even notice them. Thank you Franca, we had a great stay.

What a remarkable find. The owners, Franca and Gianni, are wonderful--kind, friendly, helpful, and attentive--the room was spotless, and the decor was open and refreshing. And, oh, the view! We stayed in a third floor double with balcony and sea view, and just soaked it all in. It's definitely a workout getting to the top of Manarola, but definitely worth. We would absolutely stay here again. Thank you Franca and Gianni for helping to make our trip so memorable!

We could not say enough wonderful things about our stay . Gianni and Francesca and their daughter Gianna are the loveliest people we found amid a country of wonderful people. The view from the apartment is spectacular , but that is not an adequate enough word. The bed is very comfortable, the kitchen well-equipped , and everything is spotless. the top apartment has an 8 x 14 terrace overlooking the Oldtown and the Mediterranean. We would highly recommend using the baggage service as the hotel is at the top of the old town entered by an alleyway just two buildings down from the belltower. We will definitely be back!

We booked through Airbandb but I expect booking has other options. This is an excellent review but let me address little niggles firstly that are no big deal : A) The directions could be improved with a schematic style map. We could not find the accommodation as it is actually entered via what in Britain would be called an alley although it has a road style name which is not as far as I recall much if at all mentioned. B) Neither of the couple that own the property are very comfortable speaking English as also we have no Italian but at our arrival the daughter who does speak good English failed to say even hello which seemed a little 'off' socially. Other than that the husband very kindly assisted with our heavy luggage and today asked how things were so very kind. So what was excellent? The room (and although not certain, I think we may have been upgraded for free as we were given a choice of 2 rooms) was great. Spotlessly clean, serviced daily (although only one teabag on day one). Lovely balcony to view the Med and beautiful Manarola. Good location with sweet little cafe for all meals a short walk away. The price seemed highish at first assessment but probably about right for Manarola so no complaints there. Tip: You must be fit, healthy and a keen walker to do anything in any of the 5 Cinque Terre villages. By chance I had developed a really bad bout of gout immediately before our Italian holiday but we carried on. If you are disabled or temporarily so as I was you can still get around but not on the traditional treks. There are 2 local type buses in Manarola and the train and the boat. We used the train and boat but the boat between most but not all villages is definitely very expensive and the girl tried to inflate the price too! We were told no taxis but have since found out that at least one taxi firm operates in Manarola and around about. Could say more but that's enough to read!

Room – We had the whole of the first floor to ourselves as had been confirmed on booking, and it was perfect. With the benefit of having a private hallway and bathroom there was plenty of space and the room was very clean and tidy. We were well aware we were renting a room and not staying in a hotel so were impressed that we had tea and coffee making facilities, and only too happy to come prepared with our own toiletries. We were not expecting a daily room service but it was lovely that this is exactly what happened. The room was kept cool as all the windows had shutters on them so you could let the air in but not the mosquito-attracting light out! There wasn’t any air-conditioning but fans were provided, we found no problem with the room temperatures. Location – At the top of Manarola we thought the location was perfect, a very short walk to the hussle and bussle down shallow steps and a descending central street but far enough out to be peaceful and tranquil. Being at the top of town means there is less distance to where you will leave your car and hence thankfully less distance uphill to drag your case on leaving! Staff – The owners live upstairs so any questions are as easy as knocking on their door, we were greeted by a good natured chap on arrival, and both he, his wife, and their daughter spoke good enough English (the daughter very good indeed) and gave us all the information we needed on the local area and the public transport options to explore the Cinque Terre. Overall this was a great place to stay, perfectly located, clean, comfortable and charming. It also seemed very good value for money to us. We highly recommend walking the hiking route from Manarola to Corniglia (for lunch), getting the train to Vernazza (for a drink) and then the ferry back to Manarola (for dinner and to stay, it is definitely the most good-natured and beautiful of the Cinque Terre towns). There was a lot of undulating terrain and steep climbs but we managed it in trainers with just a bottle of water and sun-cream for company and the views as you walk along are breath-taking.

We spent 3 days at Casa Capellini in Manarola. The apt. where we stayed had a kitchen attached which gave us room to spread out when we needed too. It has a view of the main Street into town in front and a view of vineyards on the side. The owner's daughter speaks English, otherwise no one does. The rooms are immaculate and owner very helpful.

I was prepared for steep streets and lots of steps, but I guess I under-estimated just HOW steep, and HOW MANY steps! Wow, not for the faint of heart. I would advise against it, if one is limited in mobility at all, or is "large", or has a cardiac condition. But if you are fit, or "fit for your age", you can probably handle it. The view from the apartment at the top was fantastic! It is a small, two-room apartment ("alta camera"); there are other rooms in the building that Giani also rents out. You email him directly; he handles the bookings himself. You secure your dates with a VISA number but Giani requests cash upon arrival. The unit was very clean and up to date. There is a small, but functional kitchen; basically a sink, cook top and small fridge. No microwave. Plenty of dishes and anything you need to cook with. The outside deck is spacious, and it's a good laundry stop on your trip. There is a clothesline on the deck, and everything dries quickly in that heat. I should mention that there is an air-conditioner in the kitchen and one in the bedroom--yay! If you are a large person, this rental is not for you. Everything is very small. You learn to avoid going into town during the middle of the day;it's a good time to take a siesta! Come back after 5:00 and most of the tourists are gone. Manorola is a charming, lovely, tiny town; yes, the Italians are dependent upon tourism. But we also found them to be truly welcoming and kind. Unfortunately, now that the cruise ships are going to Cinque Terra every week, it makes the place seem not as special. We were here six years ago, and hardly anyone was swimming from the concrete boat ramp. Now it is mobbed with people, especially from 11-3 or so. Most of the restaurants are closed from 1400-1800, and the only grocery store also has limited hours; ask them or check the sign. There is a wine shop where you can buy your own bottles, and water, and snacks. Thank goodness, since nothing else appeared to be open when we arrived at 1500. Be sure you have your provisions--- water, wine, etc.--you don't want to make that trek repeatedly during the day. It is actually close to the town and the train; it's about a 3 min. walk downhill and of course more like 5 min. uphill. It was hot when we were there (both times in June), but you find ways to cool off. The sea feels wonderful after you recover from the initial shock of chilly water! How many people can say they actually swam from that ancient boat ramp that is pictured in so many shots of Italy? I would go back, and stay at the alta camera rented out by Giani any day, in a heartbeat, if I could.

We stayed in the Camera Alta, the top suite, for 4 nights. It's best feature was the huge private patio with an almost 360 degree view. It was like having the entire town of Manarola and the surrounding hills on the palm of your hand, not to mention the seaview! Perfect for morning coffee and romantic dinners. The apartment was charming, very clean and had everything we needed, most of all, air-con which was a lifesaver as the heat and humidity in August are unbearable in Cinque Terre! Don't even think about renting a place without AC. Also, free Wi-Fi! Our hostess was extremely nice and made us feel very welcome. She spoke hardly any English and we spoke hardly any Italian but still managed to communicate and have a few laughs while at it. One thing to keep in mind - the casa is at the top of the village so you'll have to walk about 400 m from the train station, mostly uphill, then some steps, then more steps in the casa all the way to the top. If you are young and/or fit, it won't be a problem for you though. It is well worth the climb and you'd be hard pressed to find better accommodation for 100 EUR/night here in peak season. Highly recommended!
