My girlfriend and I arrived here late at night after taking the water bus. Thankfully, I had some offline maps on my phone to guide me here. It's not the easiest place to find. Our room was incredibly small and stuffy. It didn't have air conditioning, and opening the windows only welcomed in a swarm of mosquitoes. (If you're not...

A nice hotel, easy to access and very close to San Marco square. The rooms were a bit dusty for me (allergic) with its cloth-wallpaper, but it was ok. A bit disappointing that we couldn't get all of our rooms on the same floor (we booked five rooms, all very different). But the stay was comfortable and all in all...

We visited Venice as our third stop on a tour of Italy and loved the Colombina. We were nervous at first because as we weaved our way through Saint Marco square, we were afraid we were going to be on a busy street and never have any peace and quiet---boy were we wrong! Colombina is tucked away down an alley...

What a fantastic hotel! We stayed here for the first 2 nights of our honeymoon and it was just perfect. We were greeted with someone to carry our bags as we got off the water taxi and all staff we encountered were so polite and friendly. As we were on our honeymoon we were upgraded to our own suite and...

This is the most charming hotel I've ever stayed. Our family of five stayed here late June 2012. Our rooms overlooked the canal and we could see and hear the gondolas sailing by. The elegant rooms are comfortable and beautiful. The Murano glass chandeliers are stunning! The hotel is situated within walking distance of St. Mark's Square, Bridge of Sighs...

We loved this charming hotel. The room in the annex was not large, but well-appointed and overlooked a courtyard. It was very quiet and we could open the shuttered windows to hear the bells at St. Marks ringing at night. We took the water taxi from the airport to St. Marks (got off one stop too early) and followed the...

We found this hotel to be fabulous. The location was terrific. We were able to take a water taxi directly to the hotel. It was a very short walk to St. Marks square and the markets. This hotel was obviously refurbished and was very modern and clean.

This hotel was recommended to us by our travel company and we wanted to pass it on. Great location, friendly, helpful staff from the moment we arrived by private water taxi, which was worth every penny as it took us straight to the hotel jetty, where we were met by the manager. Our room was upgraded to a canal view...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
