Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

This hotel is probably mid range. If you want a great view from room, this is not the place. Although, it is located close to just about anything you could need - including the train station. Great breakfast is included, and American style coffee available all morning to get us

I loved this hotel! We stayed here for two nights as part of a tour of Croatia. Wish we could have spent a week here. It is an historic monastery, and the chapel is now the common lounging area of the hotel. You can still see the pulpit where the priest gave sermons. Each

Great location. Very close to train station and Ferrovia Vaporetto station. Quick check in. Nice room but not sound proof. Unable to rest well after a day of touring Venice due to foot steps of people on upper level above our room. Clean. Decent breakfast. Would stay here again

Our bathroom was modern, the sleeping room not, but this is an old building and atmosphere important. Never turned on the tv.

It depends upon how you are arriving. If by train, porters are readily available around the station, and I understand are relatively inexpensive (negotiate first). The hotel is one short block away, so not a long trip. If you are coming by boat, try to get to the train station piers.

The hotel is very close to the cruise port. The building across the street from the train station (look for Avis sign and then go past to the other side of the building) has a aerial shuttle station that charges 1 Euro (I think) and it whisks you right out to the ships.
