We arrived the day before the America's Cup was to begin. So, the normal water taxi stop next to the hotel was closed. No worries . . .a little extra walking didn't dampen our spirits! This small hotel is behind Piazza San Marco and is a perfect location. Nice, quiet location. The staff was very helpful. They offered a terrific... More

We booked Hotel Commercio & Pellegrino last minute for a quick stay in Venice based on 1. great price 2. past reviews and 3. location. My husband and I arrived late by train after a long day of traveling. We were extremely pleased with how easy it was to arrive. The water bus has a station directly in front of... More

We stayed here for 4 nights first week of October '12. It was just in from our vaporetto stop San Zaccaria and only two bridges to St mark's Square...the latter being the Bridge of Sighs. Be aware that there is one walk bridge to go over before you turn into the very narrow Calle. Our twin bedroom was at the... More

This hotel is ideally situated only a few minutes walk from the Doge' s Palace and St Mark's Square. Our room was a good size and had an en suite with shower. Continental breakfast was all we needed and we found plenty of choice with yogurt, cheese, cold meat, croissants, rolls, juice and tea or coffee. We found reception staff... More

We stayed at this hotel recently, after choosing it from Trip Advisor reviews. We would have to say it was in a superb location, only a couple of minutes walk from San Marco and the waterbus stop of San Zaccariah (or San Marco) on the Grand Canal. Hauling luggage and finding the hotel should be no problem to any age... More

Everyone agrees the location is great and very convenient to the vaporetto lines. I also agree that the front desk people weren't very friendly, but were helpful when I needed it. Breakfast was boring (canned fruit salad, only plain yoghurt) but coffee and service were good. They did have a computer available for free use which was helpful considering the... More

Recently remodeled and very Clean. Rooms small but nice decor. Efficient if not real friendly staff. Nice breakfast. Really close to st marks which is very convenient but there are armies of tourists just 50 feet away on grand canal front walkway. The hotel is not on a canal and has no balconies that I saw The alley behind our... More

Fantastic location! You can take a walk along the embankment "Riva degli Schiavoni" and San Marco square each evening, enjoy the violonist music... and reach your room in 3 minuts! Also this hotel is near "San Zaccaria" vaporetto station - it's very comfortable to come from airport and go back, as well as to get to the islands around Venezia.... More

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
