We would recommend extreme caution with this hotel. We made a booking on 13th September 2016 using Booking.com for a stay at Locanda de La Spada of 3 nights from 01/02/2017. On 22/01/2017 we received an email from Booking.com 9days ahead of our departure from Australia marked "Your Action is Requested " saying "Unfortunately Locanda de La Spada won’t be...

During our stay in Venice we booked two rooms. We were given an upgrade to one of the Canal Grande rooms. That room, and also the other room were very spacious and light, with bright colors and sophisticated interior. The bathroom equipment/toiletteries were many, probably the most complete basket we ever had. The breakfast is impressive, many items to choose...

We stayed in this hotel for four nights over New Year 2017. We had a fabulous time as the hotel is conveniently situated for St Marks Square, Rialto Bridge and Accademia and is literally about 20 steps from the Giglio Vaporetto stop. The hotel is lovely and warm and the rooms are nicely done, the breakfast area is so pretty...

My girlfriend and I booked a room at this hotel for January, and a month before we were supposed to be there (and about 6 weeks after making the booking) we were informed that maintenance was going on in the hotel and they wouldn't be able to accommodate us. I don't understand why they waited 6 weeks to tell us...

This was a lovely boutique hotel located on the Grand Canal. The building was constructed in the 13th century and hotel opened 5 years ago. It is only steps from the del Giglio dock on Grand Canal. Being unfamiliar with Venice this location was very convenient to San Marco Square and Rialto Bridge. The front desk was very friendly and...

This hotel was fantastic. Right in the heart of Venice, it is literally just up the lane from Giglio water taxi stop and a 5 minute walk to St. Marks Square. The perfect location. We arrived in Venice by train, stepped out of the station, bought a ticket from the information centre (on your left when you get outside) walked...

Lovely hotel, small, 5 floors up and 83 stairs with no air conditioning and VERY HARD beds. Beware of keeping your windows open - it sits right on the canal and there are TONS of mosquitoes. We made the mistake of sleeping with the windows open because it got warm in Venice last week (October 18-19) We were bitten by...

The situation of this hotel is splendid! You can arrive from the airport by waterbus Alilaguna and take the stop by name S. Maria del Giglio. From this stop is only appr 30 meters to the hotel! All the rooms are in the fourth floor. From the breakfast room is a splendid view to Grand Canal! And the breakfastbuffet was...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A restored home of the 14th century, the Locanda De La Spada overlooks Venice's Grand Canal. The guest house is set on the top floor of Palazzo Contarin-Marin, in the picturesque Campo Santa Maria del Giglio square. The spacious rooms of the Locanda are elegantly furnished in silk, and feature an LCD TV with satellite channels and floors in Terrazzo Veneziano marble or parquet. Some rooms offer a balcony with full views of the canal. A sweet and savoury buffet is served daily for breakfast, and includes pastries. This historic building, with no lift, is just behind the Fenice Theatre, and 400 metres from Saint Mark's Square. A gondola pier and the Santa Maria del Giglio stop of water-bus line 1 are right outside the main door. ... more   less
