My fiance and I backpacked Europe for the summer of 2008. We wanted to stay in Venice within walking distance to all the sites, but everywhere was so expensive. We found the Capon on Trav.com for a great price, in a great location so we booked it. Lets be honest, this place is no gem, but its safe, semi-clean, and...

We were unlucky enough to not only have stayed there (couldn't stand it, so just for one night), but also to have experienced their so-called fine cuisine... Upon arrival we were welcomed by an older man with a fake smile, something was suspicious as there seemed to be no guests around at the moment, and all the staff were busy...

I had read that Campo Santa Margherita was the place for reasonably priced food, as it attracted the student population. I am sorry to say, Antico Capon was not a pleasant eating experience and we should have realised this by the front of house gentleman who coaxed us in. We were hungry (we were still hungry on leaving) Good restaurants...

I was unlucky when i stayed here as it was not part of the main building. I agree with many of the reviews below that it was like staying in an old dead person's appartment that had not been cleaned out. There were no plug sockets and the towel on the floor in the bathroom was like something my dog...

But I agree with the fantastic situation of the place. We came back...

I expected the worst after reading a couple of the reviews on tripadvisor, but happily I found my stay at Hotel Antico Capon quite comfortable. It is a great location, lots of stuff around but not swamped by tourists, and the hotel wasn't hard to find. The room we got was fine, they even gave us an ensuite despite the...

Firstly i would have to say that the stay in the hotel antico capon was sensational and made my stay in venice just a dream one to remember. this was because of three things. firstly, the location is just excellent. it is located conveniently close to the main station and close to all the gathering areas and districts. secondly it...

Having read the mixed reviews here, I decided to give it a shot, since it would only be for one night. Staff was decently friendly, and on first glance, the room seemed a bit filthy, but acceptable. Booked a single room with shared bathroom, and wound up in a room off a side street, near the square - which was...

This was the cheapest accommodation with availability that we could find in Venice-proper with a months notice. It was about a 10 minute walk from the central train station, with excellent directions provided. The hotel/hostel is on a large piazza. We arrived from Paris on the overnight train at about 10am but we told we couldn't check in until 2pm....

I stayed at this hotel with my partner in May 2006. I found the accommodation very nice and well worth what we paid for it. I searched forever trying to get a good deal on accommodation in Venice. It is all so expensive. I booked at Antico Capon even though some reviews for it were bad. We stayed in a...

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

“Maybe ask for a room not facing the square- we were lucky ours was at the back and we slept well but the square can be a bit noisy at night.”

“We stayed in Room 3 with a shower and toilet, no drainage in the potty area so keep the shower door closed. close the curtains during the day to keep the sun out or it will be really hot. Ask the owner to fix the Fan (good luck on that)”
