Stayed here for 2 nights and thought the location was great. A 10-15 minute walk to crowded San Marco Square but well worth it! Our first trip to Venice 3 years ago we stayed right in the heart of San Marco. This time knowing more about areas we opted to stay at this hotel. We had a huge 2 story...

The staff was very kind. We had a harrowing trip in the rain at night from the boats to the hotel and the attendant (sorry to forget his name) was very helpful and accommodating. The rooms were not as large as other places but we felt this magical feeling of history once we entered. The ceilings were of wooden pillars...

We stayed at this Palazzo in 2008 and returned again 5 years later. Our experience was still great, and I could basically copy the same review here, although the management has passed on to the next generation, and some small changes were done (e.g. the breakfast room is now a guest room, due to the fact that the hotel has...

We stayed in August in this wonderful little haven. Its literally an island away from the rest of the world. We were there for just 2 days and the minute we arrived we were wondering if there was a way we could extend our stay - unfortunately we had already got bookings elsewhere. But if you got to Venice, Abadessa...

There are two types of people who go to Venice: those who think seeing San Marco means they've "done Venice," and those who love Venice and keep coming back because they know one can never entirely "do Venice." The latter type stay at the Abadessa. When you turn into Calle Priuli from the 'Ca D'Oro vaporetto stop, it feels like...

So peaceful and yet very central location. Seconds from grand canal but an absolute haven. Brings new meaning to shabby chic - many hundreds of years old. Beautiful central lobby area, brilliant balcony off Loft Suite overlooking quiet canal. Bathroom not the best but very clean. No hot water by 8.30am. Real sense of history here, glad we stayed. Breakfast...

We have just come back from a wonderful four day stay at the palazzo abadessa. We were fortunate to have the presidential suite overlooking the canal. The staff were extremely helpful, friendly, and spoke English well. The hotel has a pretty garden area where we could relax after a long days sight seeing. There was plenty of variety on offer...

Had a great stay at Hotel Abadessa! The staff were very friendly, was a 5 minute walk from the vaporetto stop (walk straight, right, then left) / recommend if you have heavy luggage, rooms were well-appointed (historic charm) and comfortable, excellent breakfast (yogurt, bread, fresh fruits, cheese, coffee, etc), and great location as you could walk around the whole city...

We stayed two nights in the ground floor rooms at this beautifully appointed hotel and loved it! The decor speaks of luxury and taste. The garden provides a wonderful oasis to enjoy breakfast or an evening drink. Location is close to Rialto bridge. This hotel may be a bit expensive for many travelers, but my advice would be to make...

This former embassy of the Austro-Hungarian empire is elegant from top to bottom. It's discreet and quiet, tucked away on a side street with the joy of a sizeable private garden to escape from Venice's mass tourism. My family and I occupied suites 21 and 22, both double height with additional seating areas and bathrooms upstairs. Number 22 is particularly...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
