We have just returned home after a 3 night stay in Venice at Oceano Mare B&B. The host, Nicola (and his dog, Jerry goblin) met us at the water bus stop and we walked back to the B and B whilst Nicola told us interesting...More
Oceano Mare is located just a few minutes in the opposite location from the boatloads of tourists. For this reason it's not only super quiet, but also has the feel of a genuine Venice neighborhood. Nicola, the owner has lived there his whole life -...More
We really enjoyed our stay at Oceano Mare. The accommodation was all you need from a B&B. There was a good selection of cake, toast, yoghurt, meat, cheese, juice, tea, coffee, hot chocolate etc for the self service breakfast. The rooms were clean and a...More
Reserved months ahead, choosing it based on reviews as the type of place we’d like to stay in. As others found, Nicola was a lovely host. He met us as offered and promised at the Arsenale boat station after arriving from the airport to guide...More
Quiet neighborhood, far from the crowded touristy areas but within walking distance to the city main attractions. Nice breakfast and kitchen available for light snacks and a cup of tea all day. Nicola, the host, is very friendly and chatty, with loads of great tips...More
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a
strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
