This hotel is massive having been a large central bank. It was renovated about 10 years ago and I think has a large conference business. It also has a large atrium where it hosts parties and weddings. Luckily the rooms are well insulated for noise but it was a worry. The rooms are large and comfortable. The bathrooms had a good shower and the water was always hot. There is a mini bar which is stocked but extremely expensive. There is no free water provided. The room had no information about services which mean you have to call for any questions. There is a kettle in the room but getting Cups and the tea and coffee to be refilled was exhausting. The breakfast covered all basics. You can ask for coffees and eggs to be cooked. Nothing tells you this. The staff are slow and either uninterested or overworked.
The bar was very warm, but drinks can be taken into the atrium. They made good cocktails. The prices were reasonable for the quality.

Overall it’s ok, but with the grandeur of the building it slightly under delivers. It’s ok for a day or two, I would not recommend longer.

Response from Giovanni Pizzo, Direttore generale at Grand Hotel Piazza Borsa

Dear Guest, thank' s a lot for writing your opinion on Grand Hotel Piazza Borsa. As you mentioned the hotel was a bank and it is a unique building composed of three adjoining structures: The Cassa di Risparmio, a former convent and church of Padri Mercedari Scalzi and a Briuccia-Cattolica Palace of 1600s. Thank' s also to write about the grand opening in 2010, underwent a 5 years renovation under the management of Costa Degli Ulivi Spa. We are sorry for the little disappointments, but we inform you that all rooms have an informative directory of hotel services, just as we usually offer water on arrival. However we made a good note of your review in order to improve sevices in general. Looking forward to seeing you again soon, best regards. Giovanni Pizzo General Manager

Impressive exterior but really under delivers. I’d guess that a significant part of their customers are older, monied Americans, as this seems to be ground zero for a lot of tour groups.

Pros: great location for shops/restaurants/street markets, historic unique building, interior atrium, very clean, spacious rooms and bathrooms, nice towels, quiet part of town, with no night noise.

Cons:
My main gripes are beds and breakfast; kind of critical in this business!
Beds are glorified cots. Has no one in marketing stayed in the average American hotel that obsess about bed and linen quality? All of us are jet lagged the entire time we’re here and desperately need to sleep.

Wow, the breakfast is a sad affair! Tired old stuffy setup with heavily draped tables and white coat waiters makes it feel like a seniors facility, or perhaps a dull convention hotel in anyplace USA. The food summary: Hard to find enough to eat and not leave hungry. Terrible cold scrambled eggs, earlier reviews advised to special order eggs, so I did and they were inedible. No fresh fruit, only canned. On the positive side, good juice/coffee, bread rolls/croissants/cakes. So many cakes.

We had a mixed experience at Grand Hotel Piazza Borsa, Via Dei Cartari 18, Palermo as you will see below. The hotel entrance is very hard to find if arriving in a hire car. We followed the satnav directions and approached from the east (to avoid the pedestrianized area nearby) and, upon arriving at the small square adjacent the hotel restaurant called reception to guide us to the main entrance. They kept saying turn right around the hotel which took us back into the Palermo one-way system. What they should have done is tell us to turn left as the main entrance is 100 yards down the left hand alleyway. At this point our hire car broke down. Two excellent staff members helped push the vehicle into a parking spot outside the hotel only to then be reprimanded by their manager for neglecting their other duties. It seems the hotel is run with a very old-school management style. We had accidentally booked a single room which for us was too small but they were immediately able to find an alternative and while it was a specialist disabled room it met our needs precisely and we appreciated the prompt rectifying of our own mistake. After all the drama we didn’t fancy dinner so had drinks at the bar. Some beer, wine and weak long island ice teas later we felt better until we got the bill - 180 euros! The hotel itself is beautiful being a structure built around a central courtyard which has subsequently been converted into a seating area (it’s a shame they allow smoking here as it would be perfect otherwise) which also has a retractable roof awning which kept the area warm during our visit in September. Our room was spacious with all necessary amenities, furnishings, wifi, room safe, etc. The bathroom was very large as would be expected for a wheelchair-accessible room. Housekeeping was excellent. The breakfast was wonderful. Both hot and cold options were available - eggs, meats, cheeses, pastries and cereals, juices, tea and coffee - a great way to set ourselves up for a day of sight-seeing.

We stayed in an Executive Suite in Grand Hotel Piazza Borsa for two nights in June 2023. It was the last leg of a 10 day trip to Sicily, and the fourth hotel we stayed at on the island. In contrast to our experience at the three other hotels, this was a huge disappointment. We didn’t have very high expectations (based on other reviews), but for ~$600 per night, we didn't expect to find such a sad room in such a sad state. First off, the layout was odd. There was a wall separating the bed from the sitting area, rendering the room dark and claustrophobic (it was not a small room). Strangely there was a TV at the foot of the bed, which looked completely out of place and added to the feeling of claustrophobia. The only window in the room opened onto a poorly maintained courtyard. The rugs in the room were dirty and covered in dust. It seemed that no one had vacuumed them in quite some time. There was very obvious water damage on the floor around the bed and the TV stand. The coffee provided in the room consisted of two packets of Nescafe powder and two paper cups. On our second day we noticed a leak in the bathroom, from the towel warmer rack (which was not on, but still leaking). Basically, the property doesn't seem to be well maintained or well managed.

Fantastic hotel in a very convenient location: behind it is Corso Vittorio Emanuele with clubs and bars, five minutes walk from the Quattro Canti and ten minutes walk from the Cathedral. Large rooms, excellent cleanliness. In the wardrobe there is a safe, wifi with excellent signal, in the bathroom there are slippers and a bathrobe, as well as toiletries. Our booking did not include breakfast which was a €10 buffet with several gluten-free Schar options. Advised.

The location of the hotel is very central and the public rooms are quite attractive, especially the breakfast rooms. Moreover, the staff is gracious and helpful. Consistent with some other reviews, our one bedroom suite was dated, a little drab, and certainly not worth the $800 per night charged.

We stayed here for 3 nights, arranged by our tour operator, Esplora Travel. I was unwell for some of the stay, and was grateful to be in the large comfortable room. The common areas with the huge semi-outdoor seating area in the centre, are magnificent and impressive, and the hotel is in a very convenient central location. Staff were pleasant and helpful, on the whole. My gripes would be about the bathroom and to a lesser extent the breakfast. Our bathroom was tiny and cramped with a leaking shower and nowhere to put our toiletries. This compared poorly to the spacious bedroom. The bathroom could easily be remodelled to include a larger shower cubicle (which doesn't leak). The breakfast was a bit limited and haphazard, and it was difficult to order hot drinks.

Do not stay at this hotel. Their staff is a bunch of theifs. We checked into the hotel for a 2 night stay a few weeks ago with no problem, they had our room ready, etc. We had a very early flight the next day and checked out at 430am at the reception. We paid the city tax and confirmed check out and we were off in our cab to the airport. Our cab driver gets a call from the hotel while we are almost at the airport that he must turn around and bring us back to the hotel as we "did not pay for our stay". We booked the stay and paid for it MONTHS prior with our travel agent, the payment was on our credit cards, etc. We get back to the hotel after explaining them we are about to miss our flight and they said "we have no record of your reservation, you didnt pay for your stay" HOW would they not have noticed this upon check in? We stayed there for 2 nights, checked in and checked out with no issue, and then they force us to come back to the hotel claiming we didnt pay which is completely false. In a rush to get back to the airport we paid and said we would figure it out later. Our travel agent did confirm that we did in fact pay and did not know what they were talking about. After going back and forth, they finally saw that yes, we paid ahead of time and would refund our card. It has been over a week now and they STILL have not refunded my credit card. It is absolutely ridiculous - we email and call and they flat out ignore the fact that they have not processed the refund yet when we paid double for the stay. Their staff is now unresponsive. Do not stay at this hotel - they will still your money.

I stayed here for two nights on a recent visit to Sicily. The location of the hotel is very nice - near many good restaurants and shops and also in close proximity to many of the sites one would want to visit in Palermo. The rooms were fine and comfortable. The internet was not completely reliable but adequate. The air conditioning worked well and could be adjusted in the room. My breakfasts there were also quite good.

Stayed here for 4 nights. Hotel is enormous, combining several buildings. The location is excellent for the centre of Palermo, but quiet as it fronts a car free square. The rooms comfortable. The breakfast is correct. There is a restaurant which serves good locally influenced food in a setting of baronial splendour. They mix a fine Negroni too. Helpful efficient staff. Car parking is provided off site for a fee. Traffic and parking in Palermo require stamina so this is a good option.

Parking? How close?
Answer from Yuri B
Melbourne, Australia258 contributions9 helpful votes
as far as I recall this hotel is inside ZTL so private cars without special permits can not enter the area. If you are renting a car then contact the hotel and they will advise re parking options and permits to enter the area. We parked the rental car outside of ZTL on the street (for free) and then took a taxi to the hotel, we had car for just 2 days in Palermo to do some day trips. The taxi fare was not much more than parking inside ZTL and paying for the permit (daily?) plus for parking itself.
