This was my first visit to Italy and Florence. On the same trip me and my family also went to Rome and Venice. On a first impression, if Venice is a city of water, then Florence is definitely a city of stone. Very well build and substantial to walk. Amazingly, the palazzo Alfani apartment was like a mini Florence, and...

As a family of six (kids aged 9-12), we wanted enough room for all of us with a separate bedroom for my husband and me, a central location, air conditioning, and at least a kitchenette so we could eat breakfast and lunch in when we wanted to. Palazzo Alfani is literally across a narrow street from the Academia (where David...

We stayed at Palazzo Alfani al David for four nights in Oct, 2009, and found it a great place to anchor our first visit to Florence. The location, facing the Accademia, let us time our visit there so that we didn't have to wait in line just by looking out our window (I've read that the street can be noisy...

We had an apartment facing the private Garden and we would never have believed we...

The positive reviews of the Palazzo Alfani were accurate and I am glad to post my favorable impressions. Even before we came, we chatted with Francesca via Skype and our positive experience started then. This was our first visit to Italy, and Florence our first stop. We were even more appreciative upon seeing the lovely accommodations, since we had to...

Francesca runs an upscale inn directly across from Galleria dell' Accademia off San Piazza di San Marco -- a perfect location for exploring Florence on foot! We stayed 3 nights after a month as agriturismo vacationers in Sicily and Tuscany. We thoroughly enjoyed this urban oasis of peace and comfort. Our livingroom opened into a lovely inner courtyard. We cooked...

This place is a real find in a fairly hectic city. From the minute we arrived (early), Francesca made us feel extremely welcome, giving us tips for local gelateria's, cake shops, recommending we visit the museums on a special one-off late night fee opening, helping with taxi's, local markets, etc, etc. The apartment itself was clean, modern, comfortable and quiet,...

The appartment is extremely well located -less than 5 mins walk from the duomo. The 2 rooms were spacious and well kept with adequate crockery, glasses and microwave and stove. It was nice that Francesca (who was charming) had left a small basket of snacks and some bottled water and softdrinks for our arrival. Our appartment was located on the...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The pleasant atmosphere of this residential area, a stone’s throw away from the Duomo of Florence, surprises everyone. A continuous flow of backpacking students provides the tranquil surroundings for the elderly residents who sit in Piazza San Marco to read the daily newspaper. Home to several universities, including the Academy of Fine Arts, San Marco is one of the most vibrant cultural centers in the city. A bridge connecting the modern cultural activity of Florence to its classic art, represented by the everlasting magnificence of the original David, resonates as a symbol of Florence and of Italy as a whole. Get lost in a Neoclassic world, a journey back in time through historic buildings like Spedale degli Innocenti (Hospital of the Innocents), San Marco church, Basilica della Santissima Annunziata, and natural jewels like the Botanical Gardens.
