This hotel is perfectly located in the very center of the city and in a wonderful (very) old house. Beautiful. On top of that front desk is extremely efficient and welcoming. No problem. This being said, the rooms are nothing special. Certainly comfortable clean and quiet (which, although expected, is certainly not that bad!!) but our double bed was not very a large and there was no tea/coffee in the room. We had received many positive feedbacks about this hotel and wanted to test it. In our opinion is is a good one but marginally worth its fairly high price. Didn't try the breakfast with was not even included in the above mentioned bill!

Dear JMGeneva, Thank you very much for your visit and your feedback! We are very glad that you liked our small, historic hotel and its location right in the heart of the Basel old town. We’d like to thank you in particular for your kind words towards our reception staff. Of course, we regret that our hotel did not quite live up to your expectations – we take your criticism on board we and thank you for your input. However, we consider our prices to be fair and moderate in the overall context of Switzerland/Basel. We hope that you’ll keep good memories of your visit and we wish you a very pleasant summer. With our very best wishes, Christine and the au violon team

Our room was fairly small and basic, but quite comfortable -- made from two former prison cells, which gave it a lot of atmosphere. And we had a window overlooking the courtyard. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is actually located in a residential area above the town, but one takes the glass enclosed elevator down from the hotel -- we could see the rocks that the elevator was going through -- which stops by several steps that go further down, into town, where the shops and restaurants are. Unusual, but effective and convenient. The hotel has a lot of history. Buffet breakfast at the hotel was well stocked and tasty.

What a lovely place and delicious food. Thank you Barbara for looking after us so well. The warm goats cheese salad and steak tartar were both delicious. Getting to the restaurant in the lift through the walls is a special way to enter. We'll be back!

Stayed in a cathedral superior room with a view over Barfusserplatz. The room is quirky (not surprising given its history) but is spacious enough. Whilst everything was good, there was something missing I cant quite put my finger on. The good: - Location. Easy access to Barfusserplatz by lift. From there you have easy access to public transport - Breakfast had a decent selection of very good quality. Could also get eggs cooked sunny side, scrambled, (and i forget the other) - Staff very friendly The bad: - I cant quite put a finger on it but something didnt feel right. The finishing in the room??? Does it feel more like a restaurant with a hotel tacked on???? Im not exactly sure why but it isnt 5*

It pains me to leave this review because majority of the staff at this fantastic hotel are lovely. Unfortunately, I encountered the worst amongst the lot on my last night and morning, one being the manager! I wish I would’ve left a day earlier as they have definitely left a stain on an otherwise beautiful trip. First my partner was treated very rudely by the hotel manager while he was waiting for me to return. Then the next morning at checkout I was asked if ‘somebody’ was staying with me. You mean my boyfriend? I asked. Do you always refer to peoples’s partners as ‘somebody’? For instance is this how you referred to my colleague who also flew in his wife? When i asked if this was the same question my colleague was asked when he checked out the staff got defensive and refused to answer. One woman even rolled her eyes. Wow! This may explain their behaviour towards him the night before. I don’t mind paying any extra amounts. This is not the issue. What i mind is fairness. If the straight couple was not asked these intrusive questions, then queer couples should not be asked them either. There are plenty of beautiful hotels in Basel. When I return this one won’t be amongst my choices. I travel a lot and work hard for my money. I do not demand special treatment, only general respect. Happy to spend my money elsewhere in the future.

Dear Sir, Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review about your experience at our hotel. We regret very much that you feel that your beautiful stay did not end very well and that you got the impression that you and your boyfriend were treated inappropriately on your last day. It appears that this was an unfortunate misunderstanding. We would like to stress very clearly that generally everyone is welcome at our hotel. Referring to the issue regarding our hotel manager, my superior apologized right away at the time and explained the circumstances. The problem was of course not your partner but the situation at the restaurant that evening. The term “somebody” was used neutrally solely to determine the cost of the room (which is higher for a double use than a single use). Perhaps this intention got lost in translation as we are not native English speakers. For that we apologise. With our very best wishes, Christine Stöcklin, hôtel brasserie au violon
