Sara at the reception gave us a wonderful welcome and the good feeling continued throughout the weekend. "Hostel" is underrating the place, it is really nice. Ping-pong tables are not in use during Covid-19 and breakfast is light, everything else is pretty much perfect, especially the amazing views...

I had great memories of staying at Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof years ago with its communal areas and nice rooms for the price. I always wanted to stay here again given the chance, which I had at the end of August on my way from Zurich to Chamonix from the TMB. The only room available was a twin room with shared bath. The room was not as nice as the one I stayed in previously with private bath in the newer part of the building. Overall the room was comfortable. The staff was helpful and answered my questions about getting to Schilthorn, as I only had one night and flew into Zurich that morning from Vancouver, Canada. I really liked the Schilthorn and had gone upto Jungfrau the prior trip. This trip there was a couple large groups staying at the hostel that did not interact with each other. It is possible that the difference was on my first trip I stayed in April/May when maybe there are more independent travelers that interacted more. I would stay here again in room with private bathroom, but would book far ahead as I think this is probably one of the best values in Interlaken.

We booked a private room which was just perfect for our needs with on-suite bathroom and three beds. Free guest parking out front includes three electric car spaces and there is overflow parking just two minutes walk away (ask at reception). Breakfast was included but limited due to coronavirus. The facilities and atmosphere is great with access to a guest kitchen, table tennis, pool table, gardens and a few terrace areas with seating. The Villa is just on the green across from the main town area and restaurants.

Many of the reviews describe this place well. Do not expect a 3 or 4* hotel. It’s a hostel and it provides what it says on the tin! With a family of 4 including 2 young kids, we had a family room with a bunk bed and ensuite. This was perfect as there was really nothing else available in Interlaken for a family of 4 other than if you wish to go bankrupt with the Swiss inflated prices everywhere. Check-in was excellent and ever friendly staff explained everything we needed to know including checkout times, tokens and what they could be used for and facilities. If you use the car park you can ask for a permit from reception which was handy as it was no additional cost. The rooms were very clean but basic and the bathroom could do with a facelift and it was more of a wet room which meant anyone having a shower would easily make the whole place wet and the ventilation was poor – so one should be mindful with young kids. There was basin outside the bathroom but no basin in the bathroom which was not really ideal. Breakfast was modest and contains 3 types of cereals, bread which can be toasted and a selection of butter, cheese and jam. The drinks machine makes good drinks but drinks were not as hot for some reason. Clear signs that food cannot be taken out so eat as much as you want but no take away! As breakfast goes it was basic but sufficient. The location is excellent and only a short walk to the shops and restaurants. There is a kids playground just opposite the hostel. Basic but good fun for kids. A couple of tennis courts next to it and huge grounds for paragliders. There are several choices of restaurants and shops within easy walking distance from the hostel so again location wise this ticks all the boxes. A short drive away was lake Brienz and an early morning stroll was really refreshing with breath taking scenery – it’s just a bus ride away or could be walked in around 45 minutes. Beware of check in times at 4PM but check out times strictly at 10AM – made no sense to us but seems this is how the hostel has set its rules so lack of flexibility was not ideal for us really as a little later check out times especially with small kids would have helped.
