We went into town and came back at 7am to check in. The reception itself is also a bit dingy and looks unprofessional. The owner came from a back room, where they apparently live, and asked what I was doing. Uhhhh, check in? That wasn't possible, it had been full for weeks. I showed my reservation, but he said that was not possible. No place, bad luck, goodbye. And there we were. Then spent 1 1/2 hours calling and searching the internet for an available hotel. Everything in the area was full. Ultimately we were able to go back to the Bastion in Amersfoort, a half-hour drive away. Of course I asked about hotel specials. They responded quickly and politely as follows:
The hotel itself determines their availability on our website. We confirmed your booking to the hotel on September 28. It is annoying that your booking ultimately could not go ahead and that no solution was thought about on the spot.
Since we did not have to pay anything, we unfortunately cannot provide any compensation for this. Since we want to do something for you, I would like to offer you to pay the service costs (10 or 15 euros) for your next booking.
In any case, we will never go to this hotel again and advise others not to do so! It's really disappointing!
We were asked what what time we wanted breakfast, and came down the next morning expecting to find a croissant and coffee at best. Instead we got this insane spread: a pot of coffee for my boyfriend, a pot of tea for me, a basket of assorted crossaints, rolls, and bread, two pots of fresh butter, two hard-boiled eggs in egg cups, a plate of thinly sliced cold meats and cheeses, as well as a sideboard which had an assortment of cornflakes, yogurt cups, little containers of jam (like a billion, from strawberry and blackcurrant to hazelnut and chocolate), a million kinds of tea, and even like 7 different kinds of candy sprinkles for you to sprinkle on buttered toast.
The place was better than its breakfast, but we were just kind of astounded by that, since we've been in Holland several months (granted, not staying in hotels) and that's by far the best breakfast we've had.
Ramon enthusiastically provided us with clear directions and maps, encouraged us to leave our bags and explore the nearby Paleis Het Loo before we left Apeldoorn (we'd gone for Apenheul and Kroller-Muller). Cannot recommend this place enough. Super clean, super friendly, family run, walking distance from everything. Way exceeded our expectations- especially for the price!
Limited parking available, but there is free parking in the street outside. The rooms were very comfortable and the staff attentive and helpful and the breakfasts they served were excellent. Lots of bars, cafes and restaurants in the town for you to chose where to eat in the evening
Probably the main reason you come to Apeldoorn is to visit the former Royal Dutch Summer Palace (which they left in 1962) and it is now a museum. It is a fantastic place to visit and the house and grounds are well worth seeing.
A short drive away is Arnhem for those interested in WWII history and some may recall the film "A bridge too far" which some film critics called "an hour too long!"
"We had room overlooking the street, no problem with noise."Read full review
