Perched on a meander in the Amstel, the Omval area that Ruby Emma calls home was for decades the powerhouse of Amsterdam. The gas supplied from the Zuidergasfabriek helped light and heat the city. These days, the newly formed Amstelkwartier is a more idyllic spot, but the focus on energy remains. Taking our lead from the mariners who tacked their sails to harness the wind on the river’s tight turns, Emma’s all about using the power of nature. From the thermal aquifer that stores our hot water to the building’s smart façade that reacts to the elements to heat and cool the hotel, green energy runs through Emma’s veins. Inside, the rooms all feature our Lean Luxury touches, including a big, comfy bed, aromatherapy Ruby Care products, and soft, fluffy towels, along with a Marshall amp to add some oomph to your audio.

Ruby Emma Hotel Amsterdam stands out for its stylish atmosphere, highlighted by comfortable beds and luxurious showers, as well as modern touches like blackout blinds and advanced technology in rooms. Guests appreciate its excellent location, within easy reach of central Amsterdam and metro services. However, some travelers feel the hotel doesn't provide good value, pointing to the pricey breakfast and unimpressive amenities for the cost. While the hotel receives commendations for its cleanliness and friendly staff, critiques surface regarding inconsistent room temperatures and housekeeping services.

This hotel is totally my style. The interior and the architecture is amazing.

The room was absolutely spotless and very conveniently organised. You can control lights, temperature and even the tv with an iPad. I would suggest going for the Original King Standard room, you'll find it to be spacious enough.

Breakfast was 'à la carte' to my surprise. It was really well arranged. Our food came in about 5 minutes after ordering it. I absolutely prefer this to a buffet breakfast.

Looking it up online, it seemed distant from the city center but it's only a 3 minute walk to the metro station, and you'll be in the city center in about 10 minutes by metro. The experience you'll have in this hotel totally trumps the distance.

Don't forget to visit the bar on the upper floor. The view is fantastic!

Beware, when you travel to this hotel by car as I did, you drive into the parking by driving over the sidewalk and driving up to the glass door on the front of the hotel. Right next to the entrance! It took me a while to notice that's where it was.

Staff is very friendly, which only ads to your experience. I have nothing at all to complain about. I would advise this hotel to anyone!

If you want a really modern European experience, as well as great value, this hotel is right up there. Everything was spotless, and so up to date, with iPad controlled lighting etc in the room, simple funky decor and friendly helpful staff. Little details, like fruit infused water available for no charge at reception, and a choice of shower gels also made the difference. The bed was huge and so comfortable. And we really enjoyed the continental breakfast with a great selection of cold meats and cheeses, eggs, breads, pastries and fruit juices with ice available.
Location wise we were just minutes away from a tram stop which would either take us to Centraal station, or the Ajax stadium in just a few stops. There is a McDonalds right across the street, and a mini supermarket around the corner.
We had booked it as it seemed so much better value than other places accessible to the centre of Amsterdam, and we just kept saying how lucky we got. Very highly recommend

This hotel was amazing! Location was perfect for getting into the centre, the station was about a 3 minute walk and then 1 straight metro which took about 15 mins. The rooms were perfectly furnished and had a very modern / luxurious aesthetic to them. The bed was MASSIVE and very comfortable and the lights really made the room feel cosy. The shower was incredible, not only was it huge there was also a variety of soaps, shampoos and conditioners. Our room had 2 big mirrors which I loved and they also had a tea and coffee station in the corridors where you can help yourself to a drink. There was also an ironing board by the drinks station, which i thought was really handy as many hotels charge for this service and sometimes you do need to iron your clothes from being rolled up in your suitcase. There was also a panel that closed from the outside which meant the room was completely pitch black at night time which was perfect! Staff were very friendly and smiley and the check in / out process was very straight forward. The only con I have is that the rooftop bar has a strict dress code which meant me and my boyfriend were unable to relax and have a drink whilst enjoying the view as we only packed comfy and warm clothes. We packed into a backpack and came with clothes ready for the cold e.g jumpers, tracksuits, leggings so we didn’t have any smart attire. I believe this should be relaxed a bit especially for the bar as many people like us are more than likely going to pack light and warm coming in March. Other than that I cannot fault this hotel one bit and I highly recommend anyone to stay there if your planning a trip to amsterdam! We will definitely be returning :)

We had a great stay as a couple at this hotel, the location is slightly further away from the center of the city but the metro is 2 minutes walking which makes it pretty easy to get around. Although we haven't tried food in the hotel the bar on top floor is really nice with good service and lovely drinks. Would definitely return again.

Myself and wife just returned from a long weekend at the Ruby hotel. We had a great 3 nights there, the hotel was modern, clean and very relaxed. Staff were amazing, couldn’t do enough for us.

If you don’t need your room cleaned everyday they offer you 2 free drinks at the bar, they call that the green option.

We opted for a loft room, which was fantastic, complete black out when you close the electric outside shutters, best sleep we have had since having kids!!! There is a fridge in the room which was handy.

The hotel is 2 mins away from the metro station which is 10 mins away from central station so no need to use taxi’s just tap in and out.

There is a separate restaurant and bar at the top of the hotel, which isn’t part of the hotel, unfortunately for us it was fully booked for the duration of our stay. Worth booking in advance.

Bar food was a little limited, it’s more snack food than a meal, however there is a McDonald’s next door if you feel peckish. There are a couple of restaurants on the banks of the Amstel, which is 5 mins walk away.

I would certainly recommend this hotel. I wouldn’t worry it looks to be out of the city.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here over New Years and WOW what a hotel! Staff are so friendly, the rooftop bar is INCREDIBLE, the rooms are PERFECT! No bad words to say about this hotel. Tram ride is about 10 minutes into the city centre and the train station is across the road from the hotel. I recommend highly, we will defiantly be back for sure!!!!

We really enjoyed our stay at Ruby Emma. Wasn't sure what to think about check in after reading some reviews but there's really nothing to worry about. We had staff on the desk, although it's minimal and mostly self check in, if you're unsure then just ask a member of staff, they were all lovely and welcoming offering advice whenever we had questions. Room was nice, slight industrial feel with modern furniture, great shower & necessary amenities. There are ironing boards of some floors in a communal area with free tea & coffee there too. Location was good for us, just a few minutes walk to the station, you'll pass a small shop for drinks, croissant etc if needed and the train is tap in/contactless so really easy to get around. Just a few stops from the main station and you can also get off on 1 or 2 other earlier stops to take a different route in to musuems & other sites either walking or by tram. We hired bikes from the hotel on our last day and rode along the bike path down the river which was a nice break from the city.

This hotel is a disaster in almost all aspects. First of all it's dirty. At checkin the floor of our room was full of hairs and food residues from previous guests. Dust everywhere. Toilet and shower dirty. We stayed 2 nights and they have never cleaned the room, changed tawels or tidyed up. This dispite after the first night we reported that the shower drain was partially blocked and so there was water everywhere in the bathroom area.

Furthermore during the whole night there were loud metallic noises coming from walls, furniture and windows. I can speculate it could be because material dilatation from the heat of the embedded lighting or maybe the building structure. Anyway it was very difficult to sleep with such noise even with earplugs.

Dispite the name of the hotel is Ruby Emma Hotel and Bar, when we visited there was no bar nor breakfast served onsite because if renovation works. Fair enough but they should warn customers at booking time!
So not being able to have breakfast onsite we decided to have a tea in the room and then have breakfast outside. Little we knew that the mugs available in the room are not designed for hot drinks! As soon as we pured hot water, the mug just cracked and all the hot water went everywhere. We thought it was just one defective mug so we tried with another one: same thing!

Overall, yes the price is slightly lower than other hotels in Amsterdam in the same category but that does not justify the appalling quality. With the handsights I would've happily spend €40 more a night and stay in a decent hotel.
Only good point is the staff at the reception. They are friendly and polite. But the hotel management is an absolute disgrace.

Dear guest, thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts on your stay. We really appreciate feedback from our guests as it helps us to keep learning and improving. Part of our Lean Luxury philosophy is all about offering friendly, down-to-earth service, so we're delighted to hear that our hosts in Amsterdam made your trip memorable. We'll be sure to pass on your message to the team at Ruby Emma hotel. We are sorry to hear that your stay was not satisfactory. Please be assured that cleanliness is a priority in all of our hotels. We're not sure what went wrong this time, but rest assured, we're looking into it. Why your room has not been cleaned is a mystery to us and we are sorry. Feel free to ask our hosts in the future if something is not satisfactory during your stay with us. Our bathrooms are designed in such a way that the door between the toilet and the shower is well insulated and has a seal that prevents flooding. Of course, it can happen that this is faulty or worn out. We're sorry to hear that you had a restless night during your stay with us. While all of our rooms have high-quality sound insulation, it's sometimes quieter on higher floors. Next time you stay, just add a note to your booking and we'll do our best to find you a room in a more peaceful part of the hotel. You're right, we just opened a little while ago and are still in our opening phase. This is also why we're still working on a few last touches. Our bar has really not been opened yet. We made sure to not advertise our hotel with an opened bar online, so we are sorry to hear that you had different expectations. We would be happy, if you would come back again soon and check out how much we've improved. We hope we can welcome you again in one of our Ruby hotels. Your Ruby Emma Team

Numerous couples came and stayed here to enjoy my husbands 40th birthday in Amsterdam the hotel was everything we needed and more hence my review (never usually do them)
This is a modern hotel everything is done by an I Pad check in, lights in room, window blinds, air con etc it’s fantastic it’s so easy you don’t need to be a pro.
The staff are very friendly and helpful.
The rooms are beautiful we stayed in a cosy room, lots of space and a big comfy bed with big pillows we had a fantastic sleep whilst here. The windows have blackout blinds which is also a massive bonus as no sun coming through the curtains. It’s also very quiet due to sound proofing. The shower is also huge and warm a great extra to the room.
The hotel is very clean as are the rooms.
The hotel is located 4-5 minute walk from the metro (5 stops into centre) we were coming back at 12pm-1pm and felt very safe in the area. McDonalds over the road and a lovely shop which sells fresh items.
I don’t really like lifts and had seen a review about not being able to use stairs as they were for an emergency only. I used the stairs everyday and didn’t get in the lift once the doors from the stairs were open.
DO NOT GET TAXIS THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF!!
Thank you Ruby Emma we will be back….

Had a great 2-nights’ stay, in a modern, clean and spacious room with a beautiful view! A young and friendly staff, good service. A nice breakfast with a tasty, Fresh and healthy selection of different kinds of bread, fruits, yoghurt, etc. All served “Corona proof.” You won’t leave hungry!
Diner was also very good, nice presentation of local veggies and good meat, all very very tasty!
Another big advantage: Subway is within a five minute walk and brings you to the heart of Amsterdam in ten minutes.

How to get from airport to hotel
11 contributions6 helpful votes
Agree about train to airport. Be careful of taxi. They will cheat you. I arrived late in the evening so decided to take a cab. I researched prices ahead of time and followed instructions to ask the airport taxi attendants outside about an estimate of cost. They waved me off and told me to ask the taxi driver. They rushed me into the cab as if there was a line. Cab driver never gave me a direct answer. He didn't use a meter and I kept asking what the cost was going to be. He pretended he didn't understand. I could see the tracking on google maps and on his dashboard, and he took these long routes that were even far off for the construction nearby. Charged me 80 euros. I was really upset. but it was my first time back in Amsterdam after many years and I was starting my vacation so I just let it go because I didn't want one a****** to color my whole experience negatively. Luckily, the hotel experience was amazing and the train is really easy to navigate.

If you refer to the train leaving from central station to Shiphol airport (or opposite from Airport to Amsterdam Central) it costs around €6 and the trip lasts about 15 minutes
