Perched on a meander in the Amstel, the Omval area that Ruby Emma calls home was for decades the powerhouse of Amsterdam. The gas supplied from the Zuidergasfabriek helped light and heat the city. These days, the newly formed Amstelkwartier is a more idyllic spot, but the focus on energy remains. Taking our lead from the mariners who tacked their sails to harness the wind on the river’s tight turns, Emma’s all about using the power of nature. From the thermal aquifer that stores our hot water to the building’s smart façade that reacts to the elements to heat and cool the hotel, green energy runs through Emma’s veins. Inside, the rooms all feature our Lean Luxury touches, including a big, comfy bed, aromatherapy Ruby Care products, and soft, fluffy towels, along with a Marshall amp to add some oomph to your audio.

Hotel is amazing, it’s a bit out of the way from the center but metro station is literally a 2 min walk away and only 10 min metro. Compared to what hotels are charging in the center it’s definitely worth a 15 min extra journey. McDonald’s right across the road as well. Everything was very clean and nice, staff were very nice too. Will 100% stay here next time I visit Amsterdam.

Nice hotel with good view rooms, freindly staff, and mostly contcatless services. Great location, closer to transportation with easy access to most Amsterdam attractions and Schiphol Airport. Will stay there again if I revisit the city.

great hotel, very good check in/out process and no need to worry about bad service as you manage yourself :-) ... Rooms are very good and clean, and great night sleep and very quiet. only problem was the location ... there's a McD's across the road, but restaurants are a good 1km walk.

Hey Sunshine, Thank you for leaving a review. We're glad to hear that you liked our self check-in. Not only does it help guests get to their rooms quicker, but it also frees up our hosts to help with other things like offering sightseeing, restaurant and other city tips - which we hope you took advantage of. Our Ruby Emma, although a little out of the way, is an excellent base from which to explore the city. The hotel is within easy reach of many attractions, such as the Royal Palace and the Rijksmuseum, thanks to good public transport links. It's also only a five-minute walk from the Amstel bank, where you'll find several restaurants. Next time you visit us, don't hesitate to ask our hosts for a recommendation. We'd love to see you again soon. Your Ruby Emma Team

Really disappointed as the hotel looked great on the photos but really lacked in reality. Although the facilities look flash, the service really lets the place down, with poor customer standards - none of the staff really care or value you. The rooms weren’t really prepared - with dirty windows, bed bow left on the side. The building fabric hanging against the wall keeping us awake. Even the coordioor had spilled food left on the floor. No irons in the room. We stayed in the resident suite (top room) and even that had shocking standards. Not even any drinks in the fridge, some of the toiletries were empty.

Hey Sunshine, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're sorry to hear that our service was not up to scratch during your stay. Our hosts are trained to give all our guests a warm welcome and to greet them at eye level. We really appreciate you contacting us to let us know. Upon our arrival, we were eager to enjoy a relaxing stay at your hotel. With it being mine and my partners anniversary. However, as soon as I entered the room, I was shocked to discover its deplorable state. The issues I encountered included, which I also did call about 3 times since arriving with no body coming to sort this issue out or caring. My partner is disabled and I’d had surgery so we were less able to walk to reception and back so many times to ask the same question. 1. Unclean Bedding: The bed linens appeared to have not been properly laundered. There were hairs all over the sheet, which left me feeling uncomfortable about sleeping in the bed. 2. Dirty Bathroom: The bathroom was equally disappointing. The sinks, toilet, and bathtub had visible dirt and grime, indicating a lack of proper sanitation before us arriving into the room. The sinks. One of them either had food or sick left in it. 3. Dust and Debris: The room overall had not been adequately dusted or vacuumed. There were cobwebs in the corners, and dust accumulated on various surfaces. Including under the bed and on the headboard. 4. Foul Odors: There was a persistent musty odor in the room, which made my stay unpleasant and contributed to my discomfort. Like somebody had been vaping indoors and the smell of body odor on the bedding and pillow. 5. Inadequate Amenities: Some basic amenities were missing, such as toilet roll and shower towels. We were left with small hand towels. We did ask for more but was bought 4 more small hand towels 7 hours later when calling downstairs again. When calling again I was met with a rude gentleman. Who suggested I stop being so lazy and come get them myself. Which I did try first time to be told cleaners would bring them to my room. Me and my partner are less abled. And this is discrimination! I must say that this experience was highly disappointing, especially considering the reputation and standards I expected from your establishment. I believe that a clean and comfortable room is a fundamental expectation for any hotel guest. Especially at the price I’m paying and the information on your website. Lastly, lack of communication in the reception area, lack of understanding and lack of overall care for customers. We asked around 3 different people for toilet roll/towels/the room to be cleaned properly. Also the 3 nights we stayed our room wasn’t made up once! Which is appalling. This hotel is more like an upmarket hostel. Not everyone’s stay is the same. So I know that most probably I’m going to get a reply telling me that you have good reviews and other people love it at your hotel, that it has a great reputation. Unfortunately we didn’t have that experience. So please take this into consideration when replying back. I hope you will take immediate action to address these cleanliness issues to ensure that future guests do not encounter the same problems. I would appreciate it if you could investigate this matter and provide feedback on the steps you plan to take to rectify these concerns. I do want some sort of compensation and not in a discount for a stay next time. As there will not be a next time. Otherwise unfortunately I will be contacting trading standards and sending proof to them. I see no excuses for any of this happening on our stay. So I suggest not to try and come up with any.

Hey Sunshine, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We genuinely regret that your stay didn't meet our usual high standards. Your feedback is invaluable, and we appreciate you taking the time to bring these concerns to our attention. We're aware that our management has already reached out to you to gather more information about your stay. It seems there might have been a system error during your check-in, causing a discrepancy in the room's cleanliness status in our system. We deeply regret any inconvenience this may have caused, especially considering that cleanliness is a top priority for us in all our hotels. We genuinely hope to have the opportunity to provide you with a much-improved experience in the future, one that truly reflects the high-quality standards we aim for. Your Ruby Emma Team

Great hotel and friendly staff! It's such a futuristic hotel. I really liked the elevator system and the interior design. The whole room was operated by an Ipad, and had everything you need. THERE WAS A WHOLE BAR OF CHOCOLATE 😍😍 The bed was so big and comfortable. I didn't like the pillows, though. They looked so big and comfortable until I laid down. The pillow transformed into a pancake 😅 The view from my room was really nice! I really recommend this hotel to people who are antisocial like me. They have a self check-in system, and you don't have to check out. So you don't have to communicate a lot. The parking was very spacious, clean, and safe. You could reserve/enter/leave the parking with your phone. We didn't use the car, because there was a metro station next to the hotel. You could go anywhere you want from this station. Also, there was a McDonald's. I had a great experience! 🤩 Bring slippers, the floors are not mopped. My white socks were black 😅 but it didn't bother me a lot. It's not like there were dirty stains on the floor. It was a clean room. I prefer this over a dirty carpet floor. Bring an extra pillow if you like some neck support. Or you can just fold their pillows in two because they're huge.

We really enjoyed our stay at Ruby Emma. Wasn't sure what to think about check in after reading some reviews but there's really nothing to worry about. We had staff on the desk, although it's minimal and mostly self check in, if you're unsure then just ask a member of staff, they were all lovely and welcoming offering advice whenever we had questions. Room was nice, slight industrial feel with modern furniture, great shower & necessary amenities. There are ironing boards of some floors in a communal area with free tea & coffee there too. Location was good for us, just a few minutes walk to the station, you'll pass a small shop for drinks, croissant etc if needed and the train is tap in/contactless so really easy to get around. Just a few stops from the main station and you can also get off on 1 or 2 other earlier stops to take a different route in to musuems & other sites either walking or by tram. We hired bikes from the hotel on our last day and rode along the bike path down the river which was a nice break from the city.

Extremely enjoyable stay. I especially enjoyed everything being controlled from the iPads in the room. The Apple TV built in to the TV was a really nice touch to broadcast my programmes to the big screen was a really nice touch. The blinds outside being controlled remotely was my favourite part of the day. Serena who works the later shifts is an absolute credit to the hotel. Please give her a special bonus. Friendliest and most helpful member of staff we met.

First the positives.. The beds were very comfortable and rooms and hotel were clean. Very near to a metro station and convenience shop with a great breakfast offer! There is a bar with good cocktails and outside seating / smoking area. However, the hotel policies of self check in, self check out, self sufficiency and being cashless, were a surprise and a little bit of a problem. This reliance and weird trend of removing the human interaction and connection sadly makes the whole holiday experience. ( i.e. using the currency of the country, being able to use cash, and having someone welcome you, and help you with your arrival etc - the "hospitality" part.) quite uncomfortable and adds a layer of confusion, disappointment and some stress in some places. It made it feel like we were an inconvenience to stay there instead of being welcomed. There are no working windows, only air-con for the room, and not all the rooms were working properly as our friends had issues in theirs where they had to sleep with their hotel door open all night. We were a bit concerned about what might happen in an emergency if you can't escape the room as you are trapped. We noticed you cannot contact the "reception" (there isn't really a set reception desk) or anyone from the hotel from your room, you have to go down to the ground floor and speak to staff (which is fine during waking hours but inconvenient for more elderly, less able people, and also during antisocial hours). The staff we did speak to were friendly, but we had to make the effort to find them. Please stop removing staff and cash in this idea to be futuristic and technologically savvy. Humans need humans. We need to keep cash as an option. Cashless encourages debt. It was a shame these issues overshadowed everything as it had potential to be a nice hotel.

Hey Sunshine, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us. Our Ruby Emma is an excellent base from which to explore the city. The hotel is close to many sights, such as the Royal Palace or the Rijksmuseum, thanks to good public transport connections. We're sorry to hear that some aspects of our Lean Luxury philosophy are not for you. For us, the lean part is all about making smart use of technology to simplify things like check-in. Not only does this save you time, but it also frees up our hosts to focus on what really matters: providing brilliant service and memorable experiences for our guests. It's also why we've decided to go cashless at all our hotels. While we understand that this may be unfamiliar to some of our guests, we want to assure you that this decision has been made to simplify our processes and provide you with an even more seamless and enjoyable experience. Although we don't have a traditional reception, please don't hesitate to contact one of our hosts for assistance if you need it. They're on hand 24/7 and are always happy to help. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to welcome you again and convince you of our approach. Your Ruby Emma Team
