When I walked inside the gated compound over cobblestones to the grand entrance of this hotel I was really impressed. Inside was a really beautiful warm cozy haven and my suite was huge and lovely and very homely. I particularly loved the restaurant and the bar, The Tapas was amazing! The hotel has a canalboat which took which I took...

Me and my little daughter arrived early morning in the hotel. We were welcomed with warmth and was kindly given an early check-in by Lotte. Our room was lovely with the canal view. Everything was in order and there was even a little welcome gift waiting for us. We then went to have breakfast in their elegant Bridges restaurant and...

I have stayed in several Sofitels before and they have not disappointed. The Legend The Grand Amsterdam is even a cut above other Sofitels. The hotel is in the old Amsterdam city hall, the location is very central for all the main areas of central Amsterdam. It is in a very busy tourist part of Amsterdam (just down from the...

This hotel is situated in close proximity to Dam square and in the Red Light district, however, all the chaos and craziness seems to slip away when you enter through into the courtyard. Driving there can be a little tricky, so use the GPS. The valets were super, the reception staff were really great. They saw that we were not...

Grand Sofitel Amsterdam. I've travelled to Amsterdam a dozen+ times. This is by far the most elegant and best located luxury hotel - depending of course on your needs. This is not a "party" hotel or have loud, late bar patrons, but when it comes to luxury and a top notch staff - there is no equal. It is conveniently...

This was the second time my husband and I stayed at the Grand. What an excellent and delightful hotel!! The staff is helpful and friendly, especially the gentleman in charge of the breakfasts is most accommodating. After a long flight the wonderfully comfortable beds were very much appreciated. Peaceful, hidden hotel in the city. We had two rooms different types and they were both great. Staff were very helpful and kind. It was such a relief to check in here as we had left another hotel in Amsterdam that was terrible losing a lot of money in the process but it was so worth it. Will stay here...

Fantastic hotel in the centre 5 mins from Dam square. I know why they call it a Michelin star restaurant now. Because everything tasted of rubber. Left some bits in my room and emailed the hotel to forward these on, with no reply from them.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
