Detailed Reviews
Hotel is nicely situated in Amsterdam near the Oosterpark and the Dapperbuurt. The Tropenmuseum and Artis are on walking distance. The are a lot of dining possibilities in the area but due to COVID restrictions often take-away only or outside on terrace.
There is no air conditioning so on hot days it gets very hot in the room (west side). Also there is no fridge/minibar to cool your own drinks and there are no drinking glasses only 2 coffee cups.
The toilet and bathroom are very small which makes it less comfortable for larger people. The toilet lacks a toiletbrush which faces problems for large eaters

After visiting Amsterdam Tropen last year (January 2019) and again this year (January 2020) we can now talk a lot about our experiences at the hotel.
Firstly, the staff at the hotel have been lovely through out all of the processes and our stays. Granted, we didn’t need much of their help and were quite independent. However, they always said good morning and good evening and gave us extra towels when we needed. That was all we needed during our stays.
We were only provided with one key card for the room which wasn’t an issue for us often, however it would have been nice to have had two in case we went our separately. Also there are no stairs, always had to use the lifts.
We paid extra this year for breakfast when we booked online. It’s €12.50 per person a day if you want to add it on. We had it cheaper and it’s a beautiful buffet with such a nice variety of food. I would definitely have had it for a day or two even if I hadn’t have got it cheaper online.
Both of the rooms we visited had the most beautiful city view. We stayed on the 8th and 10th floor and the view was true oh incredible and why we returned.
The rooms have everything you need for a standard visit to Amsterdam. The beds are very comfortable, slightly annoying that they’re on wheels but totally understand that it’s easier to move them. The desk space is brilliant to get ready on (however no mirror - again, inconvenient).
The first time we stayed on the 10th floor - the room was HUGE. It had a separate toilet and sink to the shower room and extra sink. It was cheaper than this year which was again understandable but slightly frustrating as we wanted that room again. It is definitely worth paying for the larger room upgrade if you want the space and a more luxurious stay because we loved the first time more than anything!
Both years, for some reason, the dust in the air of both rooms bothered us. We found we were sneezing a lot even though everything was clean. The lights weren’t very bright which was slightly difficult when getting ready in the early darker mornings.
There is a safe in the room, huge wardrobe space and two chairs. The temperature was perfect, lovely big radiator - not too hot or cold. A window is there to open if needed.
Our rooms were cleaned every day, new towels, fresh bedding. None of our belongings were touched or moved. Just cleaned around. Very impressed.
Everywhere was very clean, beds made perfectly and lovely staff.
Have been happy with our stays both times.

I have to start with the positive part of our stay here as they were incredibly nice and checked us in early. We arrived around 11am and we had our room ready, so Thank You for that! The location of the hotel is good and there is a market and lots of places to eat in the near by area. Also right outside the hotel there is a tram nr.19 that takes you to the city center and you can buy tickets from the hotel lobby for 8 euro per day( this is for subway, tram and bus) for 24hr. The lobby of the hotel is very nice and hip and there is a bar and a restaurant on-site. The not so great part is the room- it is in desperate need of cleaning and renovations. The furniture is old and they did not clean the dust.. There was this dirt on the floor when we arrived and there was dust all over the heater.
We stayed on the 1st floor facing the museum and we did not know but there is a bar/club and we were up until 2AM because of the loud music 2 nights out of the 4 nights we stayed there! I went to the front desk to ask for ear plugs not they didn't have any... WHAT A NIGHTMARE!!! So save yourself and stay on the park side and eventually bring earplugs just in case.
The bed was good and the pillows were good too but you could see the stack of dust on the nightstands...

We stayed at the Amsterdam Tropenhotel with our parents, kids and brother. We wanted to stay in a nice environment (looking out of a window and seeing a stunning view), with restaurants and museums/Artis at walking distance. Amsterdam Tropenhotel was the perfect location AND the staff was very friendly, experienced and professional, the rooms were comfortable and very clean, the reception area was inviting enough to spend time there, the breakfast was delicious. Even the corona measures were up to date, good to follow and friendly communicated. The location, next to a beautiful park, in the middle of a city, next to the Tropenmuseum was perfect: accross the street were restaurants (do eat at Louie Louie) and in the front a parking lot and public transportation. Artis and Micropia, Amsterdam Central Station at walking distance.

A filthy dusty "hotel ". My mother spent some nights there and nothing was done to change the horrible situation. Broken tissue holder, no coffee thee or clean glasses to drink. At the out check we had to pay extra €50 euro although we paid all taxes in advance. The hotel didn't want to pay it back, and they don't bother answering. A horrible service with a special surprise-you will pay for what you already paid and than they disappear. WARNING!!!!

Although it looked fairly off the beaten track at booking, we were impressed at how nice the hotel is. Lovely staff, clean room is small but has everything needed for a short stay. Would deffo come back. Comfy beds! Comfy pillows. Kettle and hairdryer in room. Nice lifts. Lovely park right on the doorstep and a good local shopping area and excellent market, and 2 supermarkets within a minutes walk away. Catch the tram 14 here from central station, get off at Alexanderplein and walk a couple of minutes and you’ll see it. Also has a kfc, McDonald’s, some good food places including halal on the main shopping street. Very very enjoyable stay.

My friends and I travelled to Amsterdam at the end of January.
Getting from the airport to our hotel was great. The number 19 tram stops right outside the hotel. Transport links from our hotel to central Amsterdam were easy too.
Staff at the hotel were friendly and incredibly helpful.
The beds in our room were very comfy but abit dusty and small. The bathroom however was clean.
While the exterior of the hotel wasn’t great, I would probably stay again.

Hotel was okay, not the cleanest. Very dusty. There was no flooring throughout, I thought that maybe they should have done a floor one at a time rather than taking it all up. Not too far from the centre (15min tram ride or 40 minute walk). Great views from the room as we were on the 9th floor. Lovely park just next door. Hotel is okay if your not going to spend too much time in the room.

Rooms were very clean, comfortable beds, good location... You could rent a bike in the hotel which is the perfect way to Visit Amsterdam.
Fully suggest this hotel.
If I will visit again Amsterdam I would definitely book this hotel.

Very nice hotel. The staff was super friendly and helped us with everything. The breakfast buffet was not too special, but good enough. The only thing I was missing was a mini-fridge in the room, and maybe a night lamp.
The location is good too. Oosterpark is literally next door, and nice to use the private parking lot.
Would definitely stay here again.

Our room certainly had 1. The staff are brilliant.
No, not at all!! We checked out at 4.30 A.M. You can always check out earlier than the time they say, you cannot stay longer than it.
There is a train that goes from Amsterdam Central Station to the Airport every cca.15-20 minutes and it costs about 8 €. We came this way in both directions. From Amsterdam Central you can take tram to the hotel and vice versa.
Hi it’s a bit of a walk about 15-20 mins but the trams stop right outside the hotel and they take minutes
16 euros a day according to their website info.tropenhotel.nl/bike-rental/
