Detailed Reviews
I really enjoyed my stay, mostly due to the fact that the vibe was very chill and relaxed. Because of this vibe, I found it very easy to meet others as a solo traveller. The staff were very understanding with any issues arising. I would definitely reccomend going on the bar crawl where you meet many people staying in this hostel.
One note to travellers - make sure you bring earplugs with you, or ensure you buy them at the reception! This is particularly so if you're staying in one of the bigger rooms; people frequently come back in the middle of the night causing some noise!
Also - book direct! That way, you get a free breakfast! As a coeliac, I was pleasantly suprised to see gluten free cornflakes forming part of the breakfast buffet; a rarity in these kinds of hostels! Will definitely be staying again.

Myself and two of my friends stayed here for a long weekend. The staff is very accommodating and helpful, I checked out early in the morning and the 24hr reception was great and the employee went above and beyond to meet my needs. The rooms themselves are clean-we stayed in a 14-bed dorm on floor one. The street can be quite noisy at night so I recommend bringing earplugs and you will be just fine. There are large lockers in the rooms, plugs & light at each bunk, and mattresses were comfortable enough for a few nights' stay. I recommend using the bathrooms and showers on the lowest floor because they're bigger and more spacious (and newer too). The bar is fabulous as well, perfect size and good happy hour deals. If you're worried about constant marijuana/tobacco smell....don't be. There is an indoor smoking lounge but it's very contained. Everyone respects the no smoking in rooms/other common areas rule. Only a faint smell coming from outside when windows open...no big deal and doesn't last long anyway. No one in our group smoked and the smell did not bother us at all. Good vibes too: definitely a "party" hostel but it's not overly rowdy. There are definitely groups that go out and club at night so if that's your thing, you can join right in. If you want to relax and chill, the downstairs lounge area and kitchen are great for that. The reception/bar area is a great social area! You cannot beat the location: it's great: safe enough but still among Amsterdam's many attractions, bars, and restaurants.
I really cannot stress enough how great the staff is. Treat others how you would like to be treated is used throughout the hostel by staff and guests. They're great to just talk to and hang out with at the bar as well. We can't wait to come back!

Location is perfect. Near the train station and close to all the action. The security is very good, with quality lockers as well as multiple key swipes required to enter the Hostel. The bar downstairs with the smoking room next to it had such a cool and friendly vibe which forces social interaction. The staff were great. Special thanks to Don the manager for the excellent hospitality.

As someone who never writes reviews, the fact I felt compelled to write this means a lot. In terms of the hostel itself, you get what you pay for. The rooms are just very basic hostel dorm rooms, although the doors slam and the wall street are thin so sleeping was sometimes difficult - not an issue, after all, most booking this know it has a party hostel reputation (this evening said, after staying at other hostels , this ‘party vibe’ seemed dull and only appealing to the 18 year olds who had clearly come to Amsterdam for a reason. Staff are helpful enough. However, my real disgust at this hostel is the failure of the staff to manage the guests. I understand it is peoples choice to take harder drugs than class Cs and Bs and respect people to do what they please. However, what is absolutely ABHORRENT is the fact that the hostel cat had been force fed ecstasy. The cat, since the event, literally flinched away from contact and spent hours staring at the wall. I understand staff aren’t responsible for guests, bits they ARE responsible for this poor animals welfare (also, some members of staff were joining in the drug taking/ laughing at the cats mistreatment). I was absolutely disgusted by the whole charade, and had I been able to find somewhere else to stay I would have. Beyond a joke.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are happy to read that you thought our staff were very helpful. They are very knowledgeable of some of the cool and hip places to visit in the city. Not to mention some really cool restaurant for reasonably priced food. We are shocked to hear this story about our little mascot, Sanchez. We take these allegation very seriously. We have spoken to our current staff and this seems to be just a rumor that has been told many years ago. Sanchez is older than 10 and gets regular check ups with the vet along with special food for his age. He spends most his days in his spot in the basement on his pillow. He gets plenty of attention from guests whom give him a good belly rub and staff whom sit and have a chat with him. He is getting older and sometimes doesn't take well to people that move to quickly around him. We do hope that the rest of your stay was nice, minus this silly rumor. Thanks again for your time. The Flying Pig Team

Absolutely no complaints, everything appears exactly as presented on their website! Even though we stayed here during a quiet period, there was still a great communal atmosphere.
The venue is safe and secure and each bed comes with a huge safety deposit box for storing luggage and valuables. The staff here are friendly and helpful and are always on hand with a comical pair of boltcutters in case you happen to drunkenly lock everything, including your key, in your lockbox, (which I definitely didn't do). We look forward to returning here soon!

The location of the hostel was great and very central however this was overshadowed by overcrowded rooms and poor facilities. There was lack to privacy - you couldn’t change anywhere except the toilets or showers. It was loud and you couldn’t get a good nights sleep at all. For the amount you’re paying for a bed you don’t really get your moneys worth. The staff were friendly however the facilities and amenities really let the place down.

The kitchen was large and well equipped. Showers were very good, some of the most convenient (and warm!) we have found in a hostel so far. The beds were fine, we booked a double bed in a 32 room dorm and while there were people in and out (and some people will just talk at normal volume in the middle of the night) we still got a decent night's sleep. We couldn't hear noise from the bar even though our room was really close by, and in general people were quiet and respectful. Location is excellent if you want to be close to the station, it's a five minute walk away. We couldn't ask for more for the price. You had to scan your key card to get into the building and staff monitored this to make sure only guests were coming in so the hostel felt safe. Free coffee in the mornings. They had breakfast on offer for 5 euros.

Totally a scam!! Avoid at all cost. They want you to book through their site and not use other apps so they offer 20%. When the offer on Hostelworld said if you wanted a room alone you had to book all 4 beds. They waited until we got there 2 days later to tell us we would all be split up in several rooms. Refused to refund. A terrible experience and they thrive on ripping off travelers. It was almost like they took pride in it.

Hi there, We're sorry to hear about the issues you faced. To clarify, booking directly through our website typically offers a saving of around 5% compared to other booking engines, and includes a free welcome drink. It’s unfortunate that there was confusion regarding the room arrangements and availability. We strive to provide clear information about our booking policies and ensure that guests have a positive experience. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Best regards, The Flying Pig Downtown

When I checked in, the bed they had assigned me to clearly hadn’t been changed. There were dark hairs all over the sheets and the duvet was crumpled at the end.. I went down to reception and they were really kind about it and changed the sheets quickly so I was grateful for that.
I was the sole female in a room with 10 males.. a little bit uncomfortable for me. You would think they’d try and make mixed dorms a little more even but who knows, maybe there was just a lot more boys staying there.
Bed was super uncomfortable and my arm went numb, pillow was mediocre. Bathroom wasn’t disgusting but not clean enough I was willing to shower in it.
Seemed like a cool social area downstairs although I didn’t spend time there.
Personally I wouldn’t go back. The really friendly staff and good location were the only highlights, but to each their own.

When looking at The Flying Pig from the outside, you see a small door and a sign. But on the other side of that door is what feels like an entire block of dorms right in the centre of Amsterdam. The atmosphere is laid back and welcoming, the people are chill and the reception bar has fantastic deals during happy hours. Down the street you can find anything from weed shops to fine dining. My 76 y/o father has been staying at the Flying Pig when in Amsterdam since it opened, and I now understand why he was so keen to show me. It's a really unique place that truly feels like Amsterdam.
Their staff was amazing in helping to plan our stay as well as I got injured and ended up in a wheelchair/crutches combo one week prior to our trip. The building has a lot of stairs and narrow hallways, but the staff gave great information and made sure I got a bottom bunk and was as comfortable as possible.
We'll be back!

Hi there,
We have been following the guideline from the RIVM (institute for health with the Netherlands) and staying on top of any changes.
In the dorm rooms some of the beds have been blocked off and the rooms are not full to capacity due to the 1.5 meter rule.
Our bar and smoking area are taped off for where people can sit and hang out. We do have the rule that only groups traveling together can sit at a table other wise only 2 people allowed per table.
The rooms are clean thoroughly on a daily basis, we have signs up in the hostel.
There is hand sanitizer throughout the hostel and gets refilled daily.
For more information feel free to email or call the hostel directly
Hi there,
The en-suite rooms have bathrooms in them.
We do not have hairdryers in them.
However, the communal showers have hairdryers in them.
All the bathrooms have soap/shampoo in them.
